This is quite possibly THE funniest episode of this show thus far, as I work through the entire catalog. And it's owed largely (but the not partly) to the phrase "navigating the psychosexual Stalingrad that is marriage to Ivanka Trump".
And now companies want ai to do non routine tasks that require social intelligence, complex critical thinking and creative problem solving, so, we're screwed
It’s utterly insane to me that we live in a society structured such that robots making it so that people don’t have to do work is perceived as a bad thing. Why is our society structured like this? Just let people work less!
Ok yes but then you need to find SOMETHING to do for society in order to get paid Or is your argument that anybody that is displaced by automation should just continue getting their salaries and just not working?
@@Rowsy91 If we don't need nearly as much manpower, then we should all get to work less. If everyone still has to work to get paid, even though the work doesn't need to get done, that is wasteful, and it just serves to enrich the rich rather than allowing the populace to enjoy the benefits of a more advanced society.
For now, my local Subway has eliminated the cashier position altogether. Now the manager runs back and forth between the inside register and the drive through while two employees do everything else. Three people now (barely) do the work of five because of online ordering. It took 20 minutes to get my sandwich made last time I walked in due to the previously smooth workflow being so disrupted.
I will never get tired of watching Johnny O interview people 😂 Be they the Dalai Lama or kids who (let’s be honest) will probably have no memory of what they discussed within a week at best.

The crane game during “Jobs” Some of the prizes you would try to pickup with the crane, looked like the Covid virus. John “Nostradamus” Oliver nails it 1 year before the pandemic 🎸

I have to say, Jared Kushner did a great job with the peace in the Middle East. He learned from trump the cnt how to make deals and do as promised exceptionally well.
This episode is perfect cus so many jobs are disappearing in 2024 already. Call centres here are almost gone. Its all AI answering. One of the most popular and good jobs... gone. Even booking tickets or a restaurant via a phone call is also now... automated. Bleh.
They told us at Walmart that there was a robot they were testing to automate part of our job........ That was a couple years ago and I have heard nothing about it since except a single rumor that the idea had been scrapped...... Overnight stockman still seems like a safe bet as a career option
Bank teller jobs have gone though. Not immediately but why else does every bank I go to have only two teller lines open but space for 6 tellers? They built the place to accomodate the old number of tellers, that's why.
I love John Oliver and am glad to be watching all of these complete episodes. Also, I'm on media current blackout until Wednesday, so this has put me in a media time warp - thanks! LWT is generally spot on, but =1 error and 1 historical addition: error? I think the girl who wants to be a mermaid doctor doesn't want to have mermaids as patients as much as she wants to be both mermaid and doctor. The buzzkill is the later call back and mention of globaL WRMING. Hi ho. For historical perspective, I believe there's one kid who got the answer to what he wanted to be when he grew up, and that was a young John Lennon. His answer? "Happy"
So off the top of my head the hardest jobs to automate would be lawyer, politician, director (requires creative vision, something ai can simulate but I think would be difficult to raise to the right standard) and teacher, I think while you could have an ai educate children, there would likely be developmental problems that may arise, so maybe only safe for high school and up. Special needs teachers and other mental health professionals would likely be impossible to automate unless we can perfectly create human ai in which case there would be a fairly strong case to give them human rights since they think and feel just like a human and as such treating them as "mechanical slaves" wouldn't be acceptable.
Automation taking over jobs wouldn't be an issue if everyone had a universal basic income they could live off of. Or companies should care less about watching the number on their bank account go upand just let people keep their jobs...
I think the point Oliver may be missing is 50%. That’s huge and I think it’s conservative. The other point is that the oligarchs are blaming immigrants for the job losses to appease the oligarchs. Who will buy the products when the population has no jobs. Also AI is a different type of automation than before. Ai can speak, understand, and execute. Oliver should watch some of the videos from Boston Dynamics. These are general purpose machines.
Videos of robots doing things they were programmed to be able to do, made by the people making the robots, will always be made in such a way that they exaggerate the robot's abilities. When you actually put them in real world situations it becomes very clear that they are not all that they are cracked up to be. Oliver did not miss the significance of 50%, he literally discredited that number by explaining that the paper simply states that's how many jobs _may_ add automation, which does not necessarily mean that a job was lost. So, he was pointing out that, as usual, news media scraped an article or research paper for an eye catching headline, and twisted the facts either out of a misunderstanding, or intentionally, in a way that distorts the _actual_ results of the research. On a separate note, oligarchs don't care about job losses, if anything they are excited by them, because that means less money being spent by their companies, and therefore more they get to keep. Blaming job losses on immigrants is being done to divert blame from automation/greed to a believable (but false) Boogeyman in a way that conveniently addresses another view that oligarchs have, which is that they don't want people that don't look or think like them coming into the country.
@@moogle68 One day, they will be forced to care about job losses, because it will threaten their revenue source. Automation is a prisoner's dilemma. You maximize your own good by doing it, but if everyone did, they'd ruin the economy for everyone else. You cannot automate your way to prosperity forever.

The sad thing is that we can’t hear Gilbert’s voice on top of Jared’s “face” anymore.
Oh damn he passed away two years ago. F
With great hope, there should be no need. Unfortunately there is an AI that can take that job.
Yea, RIP. He wasnt even that old :/
3:00 RIP Gilbert Gottfried ❤
28:55 Zoe's nailed mocking a bad-news puffin. AI will never be able to do that.
entry level tech is also oversaturated, making it hard even for young college grads to get programming jobs
Since this episode aired, not only have we lost Gilbert Gottfried's mellifluous voice, but NBC4's Pat Collins has retired.
Omg the Gilbert Gottfried always gets me 😂 rawr rawr rawr 😂
Pat Collin’s seems like an incredible reporter, and I need more segments about him.
Please vote. I voted today. Can’t relive this. 🎸
And don't forget about Arzurasia. It's between New Mexico and California.
More than 4 years later the Bilbert voice over Jared is still funny, also still probably the most I've seen of Jared xD

From 2019, you're good
John needs to bring those children back now and see what they are doing/studying for.
Hitchbot! I totally forgot about it.

Hitchbot crossed Canada without incident, only to be murdered in the US.

because robot don t pay any taxe or in europe no social security and other stuff. so a net lose to the gouv. and a long term lose in the economy too

Because people can’t survive without work. Literally cannot. You need money for EVERYTHING, even for reliable access to clean water
