00:00 Introduction
00:15 The Essence of a tie dimple
00:55 How to properly wear a tie
01:39 The way a tie looks without a dimple
01:56 Two ways to achieve a perfect tie dimple every time
Basically, there are 2 ways to tie a tie knot, one with a dimple and one without. The people who usually tie a tie without a dimple are the ones who don't really know there's a different way to do it and oftentimes, it just happens to be that way especially when the tie knot is rather loose. On the other hand, men who really know how to dress prefer a dimple in their tie because it gives the tie dimension. It gives a three dimensional sense, it's elegant, it's slightly different every time and it just adds character to your tie knot.
Let's get started, first you flip up your collar. You want to have the top button of your shirt unbuttoned. Then, you just throw the tie around your neck, adjust the length, turn down your collar and button it. Make sure your back end has the right length. For me, it's about a button up from my waistband but it depends on what kind of pants you wear, how long your tie is and how long your torso is so you simply have to figure it out. Next stop, tie the knot. It works with every knot.
The way to tie a tie without a dimple is like this, simply pull your tie through and this is the way a tie looks without the dimple. You can see the knot is very loose, there's nothing there. It looks like a 13 year old just tied his tie.
You tie your tie just like you always do up until the part where you put the long end, the wide end through the knot. Now, pull it gently so it's always all the way down and then, you reach in with your fingers and you create a little gap in there. You can hold it in together with your fingers then gently pull it through. You'll see it'll form a dimple at the bottom of your tie and you adjust it. Now you pull the short end and bring it all the way up to your collar. Voila! the dimple.
Here's another variation of the central dimple. Basically, what you do is get in and you just make a little fold on the side you want the dimple on and then you pull through the wide end through the knot. So basically, you get a dimple slightly to the side. You can do it with either side, you don't need to pinch at the top and that way you can add a little variation to your tie knots and tie it the way you like it.

If you only have one hand, like me, you can do this by reaching into the loose knot from below, pinching the tie into an M shape and then pulling it through. It works just as well.
13 going on 33 lol. Just got a job that needed a tie. Thank you for the tips.
Still have the same job ?
Nicolas Morillo nope. Was in sales, went back to surgery. No ties in surgery.

I have seen your profile picture before, yet, I do not recall from where I may have seen it.
The first ever video with the famous sax intro 😎
This skill is never out of time, thanks!
Thank you for posting this guide. I've always had trouble with the dimple and this helps a lot. You're my go-to for men's style!
+Danny Hong glad to hear that!
Oh my god I made it! I'm actually so happy right now lol, thank you for the enjoyable video
This video finally clarified for me how to do the tie dimple after watching several other videos. Great thanks!!!!
I feel pretty great that I taught myself this technique when I first started getting into wearing ties without knowing there was a particular way to do it. I also tie mine up close to the neck the way you do...whereas most men I see do their ties up much lower on the chest and then adjust up to the neck. Neat!
Cool. So easy yet adds so much texture to the look. Thanks man, your vids are indispensable.
Love all your videos. I have learned a lot and never tire of watching or re-watching them. Bravo!
I always wondered how to do that. So simple. I'm going to do it every time.
Thank you! I just tied my first dimpled tie.
You learn something new everyday. I always considered a dimple a defect in the knot. But I've never considered myself very fashionable either.
Now I'm a dimpler! Thank you!
Marco Gigli You are welcome! ;)
thank god for this video you sir are a savior.
This is a great video thanks a lot mate
When i started wearing suits daily for the first time (11-12 years old) i used to think that tie dimples were an amateur mistake and i was doing the right thing by straightening my tie out when tying the knot, i'm 21 now and believe it or not i recently learned that the tie dimple was a stylish thing hahah
1-800-000 -LOVE U me too haha
Very helpful. Thank you.
I just found out that this was a thing. Thanks for showing us how to do it!
Thanks for the video Sven it was very helpful. Up until a few months ago I did not even know what a tie dimple was. Now I would never be seen with a tie without a dimple.
Ha, I am glad you enjoy the dimple now!
The best how to make a dimple video yet!
All these years, never knew the best way to dimple is to start ABOVE the knot and pull it through. Bravo! So I don't have to buy extra long ties?
this is over the edge trick! thanks..
Excellent job
It's really helpful to me, Thank!
I think without dimple also a tie looks good! I always prefer half windsor!! Nice tutorial though thanx sir!
Mandeep Baweja You're welcome
I was looking everywhere for this !
Thank You very much.
Great video, as always. Thank you very much for making and posting such fantastic videos :-))
I always put the dimple in my tie! It’s something that shows you know what your doing. When i see a tie without it, all that shows is you don’t wear a tie often. Definitely have to rock the dimple everytime!
Aye, SirTo rock the knot properly you need the dimple. To focus on the knot not being symmetrical ,i.e. being a Half-Windsor vs. Full - Windsor is not the point. To not have the knot dimpled is a rookie mistake, like buttoning all three buttons on your jacket, you just don't do it.
You bother about a tie dimple because you're worried about how you are perceived by others, yet you can't spell "you're" correctly, you didn't bother to capitalise "I" and you've made "every time" into a single word. Personally, I'd rather be seen as someone who knows how to write correctly than someone who supposedly often wears a tie because he has a tie dimple.
actually I wear a tie every single day (including weekends) and i rarely concern myself with dimpling. usually i end up with a dimple but I am not going to be untying a knot because I forgot a dimple.
This was an amazing guide. Thanks!
Thank you!
i'd like to see a video with thoughts on trinity eldredge ediety knots
G easy back at it again
Thank you
Nicely done! Very helpful.
The Distilled Man Glad to hear that! Thank you!
You all have a great sense of fashion would love to be able to shop fort belvedere.
Perfect
Grazie. Very useful!
Stefano Terzolo You are welcome!
Very informative video-- however I think it's easier to keep the collar up when tying the necktie. Personally, I always flip up my collar, button it up and then keep said collar up until my tie knot has been finished and drawn up to my collar. This way, it's easier to keep the rest of the tie fabric hidden under the collar when it has been drawn up and tightened beforehand.
Thanks..!!
Excellent! I always wondered how the dimple stays in the tie all day. I can start out with a dimple but it fades in about an hour! Thanks for this tutorial!
+Panthro22 Now you know please help to spread the word!
Good!
Thank You Soo much, I knew you could tie a tie with a dimple but I didn't know how. you really changed my tie tying experience... AND I'M ONLY 10!!!! Thank You Soo Much😘
The pleasure is ours. Keep it up!
Thanks!
A few months ago my colleague at work told me my tie had a crease in it so grabbed it to try and take the dimple out, you should've seen the look on my face!
I love how serious he is when he says: "every single time" :) Who knew tying a tie was such serious business
Nick Baxter it is actually if you like wearing suits daily
Great video, anything that improves a mans sartorial ellegance the better!
When you sped up the part where you tied your tie, do you have a video where you show us how to tie that?
I prefer a Windsor knot and by gently pulling the wide end on it's last loop down the front you can easily come up with a dimple every time without negotiating the dimple at the top of the knot. Works for me every time.
Alpha M sent me here !

Ah, the man who said that MVMT fashion watches are better than Rolex.
You should probably go back there, I'm sure you will feel more at home among your fellow insecure "internet alphas" than you will in the classic menswear community.
I (almost) always do a dimple but I do not follow any specific process.I think that if you wear ties a lot, even as a beginner, the dimple will be there some times as you say.But with practice and by habit, you will get to understand how you can make a dimple just by pushing the tie through the loop e.g. you put different pressure depending on the material, thickness and knot etc..(don't know if it made any sense ;-) )

@osmanli tokadi right😂
Thank you!
+Dutchbag Campalot you are welcome!
can u make a video on how to tie a noose
At first I could only do a dimple with an inverted knot (tied with the tail end). Now I have the secret to doing the dimple.
Cory Gamboa wonderful to hear that!
All these years I've been doing it wrong, I use the half Windsor, is that also ill advised?
Very intense intro hehe :)
You are MUCH more comfortable in front of the camera now :)
Which knot type did U use in this video? Thanks a lot,
I love that tie. It's a shame that the link no longer works.
Will the dimple look more centered with another knot, like the half-Windsor? I find the "centered" dimple here looks lop-sided and asymmetrical.
Such an incredibly specific subject! Glad the Gentleman's Gazette has it covered though!
Though the question is, are there any situations in which a tie dimple is undesirable or inappropriate?
For me personally I don't do one at traditional black suit, straight black tie funerals. I try to be as unassuming as possible.
I cannot think of any right now.
Never dimple in casual dress, example a casual linen tie!
This video finally introduced the iconic intro song
What’s the name of it ?
Do we need dimple in prince albert or van wijk knot?
The dimple is the American style for a tie. I choose it too as I think its better (ie what a gentleman would prefer). This shows that to be a gentleman, the attributes belong to no one country, its the best of international!
i don't know why people say that ... american style blah blah blah. i bet you cannot find a picture of the prince of wales without a dimple. I think the dimple should come off naturally. like all aspects of the tie should be. ties are just like pocket squares, you don't want it looking like you spent hours in front of the mirror trying to make it perfect. a little asymmetry is better than a little too contrived. that may mean some days I don't have a dimple especially with some of my really thick wool/linen ties.
For the discerning gentleman!
My ties must have the dimple.
Charles Tyrwhitt ties for the best in exquisite British fine tailoring.
Hahaha Throwin shade
onto whom?
I didn’t care for the patronizing tone towards the dimple-less tie know, because I think that it can look elegant in a Windsor knot. That being said, it was still an inciteful video.
I can't do it. Maybe because my ties are silk?
please make sure to use a well pressed shirt next time, though the tie knot is perfect.
I have trouble getting a good dimple with thinner (material) ties; & having to tie it too tight to hold the dimple which makes the knot smaller than I'd like. Thicker ties seem easier. Any advice?
pull the tie down at the very center seem. Kindly pull more on the back of the tie. this will help with the thinner ties. its very hard to describe but if you pull on the tie seam you will get the dimple
Just before shooting the video "what should I do with my hands?"
Just playing nice vid
What was the name of that first knot? It looks great!
+James McDowell I think it was a four in hand. Make sure to checkout our tie knot tutorials ua-cam.com/video/FZxwm47rTvk/v-deo.html
That's the King Tomislav simple knot.
I see a lot of Americans do it... however I prefer it without a dimple. You can still pull the knot a little tighter and if you get it right you end up with a nice symmetrical round convex shape that's very elegant. the example from the beginning only looked awful because he didn't fully close the knot
Thanks! Is your accent different here?
Dear Raphael,
which knot did you use in this video? I can´t figure it out by myself for some reason. Thnaks in advance!
+Balthazar Enzo I am using the Four in Hand Knot. I explain how to tie it here: ua-cam.com/video/FZxwm47rTvk/v-deo.html
+Gentleman's Gazette Thanks for the answer. I am just wondering, because in the video you put the left side over the right side, and then you move the side that is coming from the left under the right part of the tie which is coming from the collar. The knot looks like a four in hand indeed, but you seem to tie it differently. Am I right?
+Gentleman's Gazette The move that I mean starts at min 1:33. At the end the knot looks like a four in hand with more volume to me.
+Gentleman's Gazette does this knot with extra move (1:33) has a name, or is it a variation of four-in-hand?
I adapted the pinch technique used in this video. Instead of pinching, I create a circle using my thumb and middle finger around the wide end at the top of the knot. This similar to how you pinch, I just go under the portion that you pinch. I make the hole with my right hand and then tighten the knot with my left hand. When the knot it tightened, it pulls up to my finger tips. The dimple is (for the most part) centered in the tie. I then adjust the tie like normal.
If this was confusing, watch my tie tying video. Skip to about :50.

Hope the video helps, and thanks for your video, Sven.
Dimple also depends on tie stuff (fabric)
What is the bame of this knot?
Great video - but crazy that your shirt isn't ironed @2:26
I always get dimples on my tie knots even tho I don't actually like them just not for me
doesn't matter how many times I try it or different ways of pinching it, or even different knots - i can never get the dimple. I pull the tie through and it just disappears
Before I learnt how to tie a dimple, I thought a tie without a dimple looked okay. Nowadays I can't stand seeing one without a dimple. Looks so flat and boring, like you're only wearing a tie because you have to. Dimples are for men who wear a tie because they WANT to and appreciate how beautiful they are.
I am not the one who don't know how to tie a dimple but the thing is when we make a dimple the tie turns it's back side front.
How hard I try. I don't get the dimple right :(. So guess I'll stick to being 13 😅
Which tie knot is that?
+kevin13198 Four in hand
Iron your shirt Mr. G.Q.
First Presidency status
Why did you speed up the video???
Doesn’t work with the full Windsor
I would advise against the off center dimple. A lot of the knots I see on this guy’s ties look like one side of the tie is folded over.
nothing wrong with that either. the worst thing you can do is look too contrived like you're some kind of princess who spends hours and hours in front of the mirror before going out. after all this is men's style not prissy girlie powder puff. sometimes a man has to say good enough and get to work.
One of those rare ones that ties a tie the correct way - top button open, then put down the collar and then put on the top button. Antonio and AlphaM do this incorrectly... IN MY OPINION! :-)
I just can't wait till this skinny tie trend is over so we can have WIDE ties back again!
Politics aside, Barack Obama rocks a 4-in-hand tie dimple like no one else.
I pinch with my thumb and middle finger, index finger putting pressure under the knot and pull to create a dimple.
Anang, the problem with that method is that the dimple will not always remain in place over the course of a day, depending on what tie you use. The method I use will keep your dimple in place no matter what.
Might be a sticky wicket b/c of my fat fingers but I'll give it a try
True, but did you see how much a fool he looked in a tuxedo or white tie.
Yes. His formal wear is not great as many style experts have pointed out. It was worse before he was president when he wore a white tie with a black dinner jacket.
Connor Smith I am surprised as to whom advised him to wear stuff like that. Maybe one day we get the chance to advise the President on proper wardrobe and etiquette so he looks like a statesman, not like a fool. George W. Bush wasn't any better by the way. I think you can see faux pas across the political spectrum.
I don’t understand what I’m doing wrong…. Oh I do that every time but I can’t get a dimple to stay
The dimple is non negotiable gotsta have it
Do NOT Shame 13 year olds with ties on, I'm am my self a 13 year old and I wear a tie everyday. I may be a bit of a outsider but I think it's cool ( and I use dimples)!
i always find these style rules obnoxious. there are pros and cons to every style choice. wearing a tie without a dimple is perfectly acceptable but in my opinion it looks too contrived like you spent a half hour in the mirror trying to remove every crease. however there is nothing wrong with it. it looks equally contrived to ensure that you have a perfectly symmetrical dimple. I tie my ties and if they come out looking good or unique i leave them. trying to dress too perfectly makes you look like a tool. dressing to sloppy makes you look like a fool. its all about balance. good on you for keeping the tie alive!
Full Windsor today. Full Windsor tomorrow. Full Windsor FOREVER!
Ok here is my take on the dimple.......
I like the dimple if it's centered. If it isn't centered then to me it just looks sloppy and looks like you didn't care that particular day.
I prefer a tie without it, especially with a fatter knot. To me, it looks better
1:51 But what if I AM a 13 year old?
Forget the long narrative, just get into how to tie the tie
