    Good overview. And I agree with you wholeheartedly on the framing bit. It really brings the whole base and mini together into a finalized dioramaesque piece. Good video mate.
    Cheers,
    Tristan.

    Thank you for the overview of these great models! I've been debating picking them up and you're really convincing me I should.

      Sandro Teixeira they paint up really well and the battle in a box set is a great deal. I’m planning to get another one once I’ve caught up with a back log of painting

    Nice bases...it makes a difference with the larger scale....1/72 I tend to just put the filler on mixed with paint then add the flock whilst its wet..highlight it later....this is much better.

  • @gunner678
    @gunner678 6 років тому +2

    Try mixing the filler with PVA and paint...you get a smooth paste that dries hard and lasts for ever. Then add your bits on. Its quick and it looks effective. I am watching these again because i am painting perry ACWs, in fact louisiana tigers at present. I have an idea for the stripes that i will try. Flat brush sculpted to give spaced multiple lines. If it doesnt work, i will try your method as they looked very nice. Its always good to try different methods. Cheers REME!

    Thanks Leon, really good one. We start off our basing in a similar fashion except that I use Das modelling clay instead of filler. However, I haven't thought to add stones to any of mine so far before the clay dries. I'll just have to see how it looks, maybe add some more Das to the base of the rocks to blend them in.
    Those ACW figures look ace by the way.

      hi Lee. you should be fine pushing the rocks into the DAS, the pva glue will help blend them in, Thx mate, just needed a break from all them white belts lol

    Great video & helpfull. I think every hobbyist should watch @ least 4 tutorials on basing as each will have tiny differences that may pertain to your situation & what materials you have @ hand @ the time, resulting in a better final job. Keep up the good work.

    Love the flower tufts. Who are they from if you don't mind me asking? Haven't seen ones with flowers before :D

      @leont66wargaming31  7 років тому

      CloakingDonkey hi mate. I found the tufts on eBay. They're from a company called Tajima tufts. Although I now make my own. Here's a link

    Leon, what size bases are those? Thanks.

    • @leont66wargaming31
      @leont66wargaming31  6 років тому

      Frederick Winfield they are 45mm x 45mm 2mm mdf. I got them from warbases. Most people use 40x40 but I find the extra 5mm gives you more scope for scenic bases

  • @andrewm3934
    @andrewm3934 6 років тому

    Are figures normally glued to the base before the basing,. Or could you complete the base then add the figure?

    • @leont66wargaming31
      @leont66wargaming31  6 років тому

      Andrew M hi mate. You can glue the minis on after if you trim off the plastic base around the feet. The only problem with that is your figures are not as secure to the base. You could pin them to make them a bit more secure but I've tried it and found gluing them to the base first was better.

    I always get filler on the shoes or trouses on the figures................

    • @leont66wargaming31
      @leont66wargaming31  5 років тому +1

      SlotraceDK yup me to. I have a damp brush on standby to clean it off but I still miss bits. Tend to paint the bits I’ve totally missed to hide them

    • @SlotraceDK
      @SlotraceDK 5 років тому +1

      But at least you paint the figures first and then base them just like me. I’ve seen guys who base first and then paint. Makes it harder to paint them, I think.

    • @leont66wargaming31
      @leont66wargaming31  5 років тому +1

      SlotraceDK yes I agree. Can’t see how it’s possible to paint them very well when they’re instructed by other models lol.
      Madness 😂😂

  • @troyz1972

    Thank you for the great tutorial. I wanted to ask what type of glue are you using to adhere the plastic figures to the wooden bases? Also, what's the purpose of scoring the wood before you affix them to the base? Thanks, Troy

    • @leont66wargaming31
      @leont66wargaming31  5 років тому

      +Troy Dover thanks buddy
      I use thick superglue to glue the models to the base. I score the bases so the pva/white glue grips better to the mdf base. It’s not 100% necessary to do it tbh but I just do it for peace of mind 🙂

      Andrew M hi mate. To be honest I can’t remember them all off hand lol. If you go on my home page there’s a playlist for the ACW and I list all the paints on them videos 🙂

      Yeah nothing ground breaking here,I was asked by a couple of subscribers how I did my basing so threw up a vid to help and maybe help new people to the hobby, I've moved to basing on 1p's now for more versatility with rules systems

    • @artourious6346

      Leon, sorry i wasn't intending for it to read as hard as it reads back. Just i remember that style of basing from way back in the 70's... I always use the sand and glue method myself, so much easier. and now i add my base paint to the sand and glue mix. Once dry all i have to do is dry brush for me its usually 3 or 4 dry brushes. Point to note i always mix a spot of paint with my pva glue, i find a pure white pva glue shows through the flock even when dry. I used to own Military miniatures, the figure painting and basing company way back..

    • @leont66wargaming31
      @leont66wargaming31  6 років тому

      haha funny you should say that, someone else mentioned the same method, pva\glue\paint I think i may give it a go, anything to save time basing lol

    • @artourious6346
      @artourious6346 6 років тому

      Your site popped up on my utube feeds as im basing my 40mm ACW at the moment, so i was interested in what you were doing. I have tried many many methods over the years and for me now, maybe because im lazy, or have so little time, but i just have an ice cream tub, and pour some pva in that, drop of water, brown or sand base paint, i use a dulux tester tin, so much cheaper, and then a fine or course sand depending on what scale im basing. Give it a good mix in till your happy with it, if its to "stodgy" add water, if its to runny add sand. i also add the odd larger bolder on as required just like you. Once you have your mix just right, and your finished make sure you seal the lid tight on what ever tub you use and it lasts a fair while.

      Cheers mate, I'll think I'll use it on my 15mm ancients, would of tried it on these 28mm Naps but I've already started doing them now so dont want to use mixed bases in the army. thx for the description on the mix buddy
