How do you compare to the ‘average’ cyclist?
The Strava data (I assume) would be very much selection biased by GDP/socio-economic factors.
Sadly, not well. Not at all.
No surprise, I'm above average on all categories... so my mum was correct.
2021 Strava says: 7,672.6km, 39.96km avg ride, 17,471 m elev gain. 1.0056179775 hr per day
Couldn't care less......
I started cycling in November 2020 on a £500 halford boardman. Loved it so much upgraded my bike a month later to a roubaix comp 2021. Unfortunately after just 500 miles I get diagnosed with cancer in March 21. Had the all clear in November this year and to celebrate I did my 1st century last Sunday in 7.45hrs. Great channel all ❤️
Thanks for sharing. Your story inspired and strengthened me in more ways than words can express.
what cancer prostrate
Go little rockstar ❤️🙏
Best wishes Tipps and your century time looks good to me.
That's amazing to hear, glad your clear and back in the saddle!

And another one for Tim... Absolutely brilliant!!!

Your discussion of the start of winter sparked a thought for me: My first wife (I was only supposed to have one--but such is life) chose as our wedding day June 21--the longest day of the year and, consequently, the shortest possible wedding night of the year. I should have recognized that as an omen. The second wife chose as our wedding day December 21--the shortest day of the year and, consequently, the longest possible wedding night of the year. Needless to say, the second marriage has been utter bliss. ;-) Here's to the winter solstice!
Wow that is quite a turnaround, isn't it?!
Best comment EVER !
Never in my 30 years has this thought crossed my mind. Thanks
GCN- “we need to stop making fun of Ollie for getting dropped”

Longest ride -12:05hrs (Everesting) Shortest ride -5 meters, fell off bike at end of driveway breaking my scaphoid in wrist 😂
The question now arises: What is more impressive?
@@ili4707 probably breaking my scaphoid in two and getting a metal screw as a souvenir. I got nothing for Everesting 😄
Twisted my ankle leaving the house, before even touching the bike. Beat that! The doctor prescribed cycling to aid the healing process. Can't say no to that!
HAHA! I have the exact same surgery as well lol pretty painful to be honest though at least mine was and i've broken over 20 bones that was by far the worst yet the smallest!
@@STAY_AT_PLAY ha I'm with you in that one. Smallest and most painful. The surgeon was surprised in was able to snap such a small bone in half. Have a metal screw keeping it together.
One reason Brazil might have slower times is that mountain bikes (XC almost exclusively) prevail over road bikes by a lot! We're mostly riding gravel or singletrack trails.
That's true, at least 7 in every 10 rides are MTB here.
I couldn't agree more. Good road bikes are more expensive than HT's and fast gravel bikes are even pricier than good road bikes. On top of that, most weekend warriors in Brazil are in pursuit of social rides, not kom's
watch out for snakes
Yeah, Go Avancini!!
I came here just say that.
The seasons are defined astronomically: Spring begins with the Vernal Equinox (around March 20, northern hemisphere), Summer with the Summer Solstice (around June 21), Fall with the Autumnal Equinox (around September 23), and Winter with the Winter Solstice (around December 21).
The equinox is defined as the moment when the plane defined by the moment the earth's equator passes through the geometric center of the sun, and the solstices are defined as the moment the sun reaches its most northerly or southerly excursion relative to the celestial equator. The local time of these events depends on longitude and the although the local time of these events does not vary, the terms Spring/Fall, Summer/Winter are reversed in the Southern Hemisphere. The advantage of defining these terms in astronomical terms allows discussion to share a common basis and reduces confusion.
In southern Australia the seasons generally are based off the months - Summer starts December 1st, Autumn on March 1st, Winter on June 1st and Spring on September 1st. Mightn't be quite as scientifically accurate, but it is easier to remember (and the main rule of Melbourne weather is to expect all four seasons in one day everyday, so specific dates aren't as necessary) :).
Also, Si said astrological instead of astronomical. :)
Thank you professor, I think even Si will now agree with these dates
I full agree with the above, seasons tart with equinoxes and solstices. The weather, or to be more precise the climate, on the continent aligns with the se dates, where deep Winter is in January / February and high Summer is mid July to end August. Britain as an island is an outlier with its maritime climate.
@@lyha91 It probably would have been more accurate to say "ecclesiastical" instead of either "astrological" or "astronomical." Apparently the reason the vernal equinox is on March 21 rather than some other date such as the first of the month goes back to Pope Gregory. According to Wikipedia, he "wanted to continue to conform with the edicts of the Council of Nicaea in 325 AD concerning the date of Easter, which means he wanted to move the vernal equinox to the date on which it fell {then on the Julian calendar]". And that date was 21 March.

this one deserves so much more votes 😂😂😂
Si: "No one can argue when Christmas is, can they?" Well, yes they can. The observance of Christmas around the world varies by country. :)
The editor should do some explaining about the reason why the stats shown when talking about Brasil were the ones from USA. ;)
Agreed! Also, in the first section, Si and Dan are left of centre. I thought it was weird and the desk confirms it. Maybe the editors are ready for the Christmas holidays! 😁👍
Can slightly conform - I ride with a ton of Brazilians who now live in the USA.
And, why oh why, did we have to calculate the average speed ourselves? Lame.
I don't know how fair the comparison of distances traveled per country is, Strava is used mostly in English-speaking countries(US and UK make up almost 50% of active users), it's not exactly something "popular" outside these.
It's not like the grandma in Netherlands is uploading her rides to Strava, but she rides quite often.
Great point. i don't bother using the garmin when I ride my shopping bike and it goes out more often than the other bikes.

wow its been ages since Dan subtly told us he rode for Cervello Test team !!! I almost forgot 🤣
MSBrewer here! Thanks for the Hack for my 3D spacer. Was a great fun project and is opening the doors to more 3D printed spacers! Big up the GCN crew 🤙🏼
Love the first place inspirational photo. I'm planning to move to the area myself, so it seems like I have quite some riding to look forward to. 🤩
regarding seasons start: Seasons start with equinoxes and solstices. The weather, or to be more precise the climate, on the continent aligns with the se dates, where deep Winter is in January / February and high Summer is mid July to end August. Britain as an island is an outlier with its maritime climate.
Winter starts if the temperature drops just below 30 degrees C 😂 😂 😂
"There's nothing like starting a foggy ride then climbing up into the sunshine" Nice, yes, but beaten by flying a Boeing 757 from a foggy runway in Bergamo and climbing out over the Alps on a cold winters day 🙂
Scarily enough my average ride is 17 miles and 1hr20.
In response to the winter conversation from a meteorology student at Oregon State University:
The reason why meteorological winter is December 1st to February 28/29 is because this is the most likely time for wintery weather to occur in the NH. The coldest temperature on average also occurs around January 15th in the NH (varies by location), halfway through this definition of winter.
Astronomical seasons start differently because they are based off of when the equinoxes and solstices occur. Winter solstice is December 21st because it's the day the NH tilts away the most from the sun.
Here in Central Pennsylvania, I pretty much just divide the year into two seasons--Mid-October to Mid-April is generally cool or cold, Mid-April to Mid-October is generally warm or hot. And no knock on specific seasons, just that the lines between them are hazy around here, tho' I do like it when a day is true to its season, like a spring morning or a hot summer afternoon or even a mighty snowstorm in winter.

I wonder what the total amount of m in elevation gained would be if the Dutch did 657.6 million km... It still wouldn't be more than a couple of hundred meters....

OMG. I actually AM a meteorologist and my wife is an astronomer…. FIRST, “Astrologically” speaking is ASTRONOMY! tisk tisk tisk. The astronomers do define seasons on the solstice and equinox, but as I am also a Celt, the celts and others used the “cross quarters” - Beltane (May day) / Lughnasa / Samhain (Halloween) / Imbolc (St Brigid’s Day, more or less Mardi Gras. Pagans seem to have returned, so you can find people running around on these days (not Pagan’s Biker Gang - don’t mess with them). So it is Midwinter and Midsummer for just the reason you declare. By that measure Winter should start on Halloween. That is a bit silly though - even though the general circulation switches from summer to winter conditions quite quickly at the Solstice (the Inter Tropical Convergence Zone, or ITCZ, moves from roughly the northern tropic (Cancer) to the southern tropic (Capricorn) quite rapidly - much more quickly than the sun at noon itself - it takes a while to actually cool the Earth (really the ocean) down, so yea, Meteorological winter (as in it is cold and nasty) is skewed later than Halloween and starts in mid - late November. Hah.
The clip where James walks thru the smoke on Dutch corner, is the best.
Caption competition. “He has his beer, I have monopoly with Sy” MVP thought and a smile of happiness came across his face.
Winter starts when the daylight savings takes an hour away and spring starts when we get the hour back. I go for rides after work but not in the winter when it's dark. Another reason to get rid of daylight savings!!
you two are the best pairing on the channel!
What, better than Hank and Hank's dad?
In Canada winter lasts from about October to April. This year we got a record 2 weeks of actual summer then 4 months of rain, slush, and forest fire smoke.
Around here, fall and winter just kind of slowly bleed into each other. We've had the early winter sunsets for quite some time now but the weather has just been a seasonal mix of clouds, more clouds, wind, {shakes fist} damned wind, cool rain, and slightly milder (but still not fun to get caught outside in) rain. Haven't had any frozen precipitation to speak of or any ground frosts, so it's certainly not what some people would call winter weather. I'm just gonna say that it officially became winter upon the capitulation of the last of the little yellow flowers that line sections of a local trail that I frequent, and I haven't seen one in about ten days.
On the plus side, tomorrow is the first day where the sunset actually starts moving back and by new year's eve we'll have gained a full ten minutes in the evening despite somehow losing six in the morning. No one really cares about those morning minutes though.
caption: Dan smugly taking a quaff of beer after humble-bragging to MVDP how he once rode for the Cervelo Test Team.
Date of season changes is a historical change adopted from the British Navy. By changing seasons on the first of the month helped sailors know when to change from blue uniform to white (and vice versa). As a result, the change of the seasons is on the first of the month throughout the former British Empire, whereas most of the rest of the world changes seasons on the Solstices and Equinoxes.

My average ride so far this year was 3 hrs 54 mins (168 hrs over 43 rides, a mixture of Road and MTB, at an average speed of 21.4km). Planning to squeeze in one more longish one next week to get the average up to the 4 hour mark and earn myself a guilt free Christmas feast :)
It's time we accepted that the seasons (in the UK anyway) are not equal in length. Winter (Dec-Mar) and summer (Jun - Sep) are 4 months long and autumn (Oct - Nov) and spring (Apr - May) are 2 months long. That's how it feels in Cumbria anyway.
Caption: Mathieu giving Dan a head start on the Amstel Gold race
CAPTION CONTEST Dan and MVP at the first ever session of the Dan Lloyd Pub Academy.
My average ride is 47 km and 2:22 h. I hit the 12,000 km marker in November... but wont be hitting the 13,000 km before the end of the year, as December is a too dark to ride during the week enough.
Def in Texas the start of winter is Dec. 21st...first cold day this year at 2-3 degrees C. But summer starts here much earlier, like June 1 lol. Temps are usually well into the 30s by then.
'No-one can argue when Christmas is' ... Cue huge brawl between Western Christians and the Orthodox church!
I think of winter as starting on Halloween and ending on groundhog day. This is the three- month period with the least daylight. These are the cross quarter days. Halloween is about the time when temperatures drop and rain starts where I live, about 45 degrees north.
Dan's caption suggestion! 🤣🤣🤣🍻
Christmas starts in the UK supermarkets about September. I bet there are even some people getting ready for Christmas 2022. Can't they wait until Christmas 2021 has finished.
Winter begins for me when daylight savings time ends. Then it is dark when I get out of work for at least three months.
Seeing the opening form the Detroit Velodrome is sad these days- as the structure was blown apart over the weekend after the blower keeping it inflated lost power on a very windy day here in the midwest of the US.
An hour ride is great, as Si says you can be in and out the house in no time and ride at an average pace that is a lot higher than when you cycle for 2 hours plus
you're absolutely right about the starts of the seasons
Dec 21st is the first day of winter and the shortest day of the year. Days get longer during winter and shorter during summer as the first day of summer, June 21st, is the longest day of the year. After that, days get shorter
Regarding "WINTER"... I set my cycling season based on St. Patrick's Day (march 17th) to start, and my birthday at the end of Nov. No Matter the temps, snow or ice. Some rides require a Mt. Bike rather than road machine.
But I've also started considering a new old-guy rule: "Never Ride in Temps Colder than you are Old".... So while each season gets a little shorter, it also gets a little nicer every year.
This past year of riding was: Avg Ride Dist: 34.1miles / 54.8km, Avg Ride Time: 2hrs, Avg Ride Elev: 1,311ft / 400m - mix of road and gravel. Winter starts Dec 1st and ends Feb 28th. :)
Another interesting video!
I'm a cyclist in the USA and member of a bike club, so our club rides are MUCH longer in duration and elevation than the averages listed in this video. Not surprising I think.
It's the indoor trainer data that is skewing the results. Granted, we have grandmothers on Strava (like my mother) who ride shorter routes anywhere from 10 to 20 miles, but I feel that the majority of USA riders are doing more than that, and at least 2-hour averages for outdoor rides.

HAHA! Now this is some content! Thanks, GCN for a fun and interesting video! Completely got to disagree on the indoor trainer though, on Zwift my average rides are 2 hours or more. After getting in a hit and run in Arizona (in a bike lane BTW) I enjoy the stress-free ride including the cadence rather than having to worry about cars or stop lights.. especially where I live people absolutely hate cyclist! I even got shot at with bb guns on the local bike trail last month! Getting flicked off or a diesel truck black smoking you on a regular basis isn't that enjoyable! NOT TO MEANTION looking at all these death counts sadly increasing for cyclist.. Just my 2 cents, indoor over outdoor every time unless of course I'm on the MTB and wanting to throw some whips!
A Cam Nicholls/GCN crossover! I love Cam's channel
I call it winter when I have to put on more than a jersey and shorts. I live in California so that could very well be December. I'm getting ready to do a short ride at about 40° F. I've ordered some winter kit but it's not here yet, so..long sleeved running shirt, t-shirt, and basic cargo shorts. Cheers 🙂
Surprised no one pointed out the first hack/bodge "drop stop" chain ring did its job. It tied the chain into a pretzel but didn't drop it.

I took up cycling towards the beginning of the first lockdown (June 2020) so still a bit of a noob. This year I have averaged 31km a ride and my average ride time is approximately 1 hour 15 minutes. That said, most of my road rides have been longer than 31k with the shorter ones being on Zwift. Although it's Zwift that has upped my average speed.

uasually ride quite a bit longer in time and distance , indoor on rouvy can be as short as 1hr or 4hr 21min doing the colle delle finestre on rouvy, being retired helps .
Oh, man! I live in Japan, and, if I can't commute by bike, I usually squeeze a 1:10-1:20 bike ride. That is the time for a great climb(Rokko Driveway, 700 meters) or a quick ride around the closest artificial island(a 27km ride, coincidentally). On my free days I do a 3-6 hour ride, 65-120km. That is why I prefer to commute, which lets me put almost 100km extra...
