    This is the only movie Wayne visibly goes without his hairpiece depicting the older Spig Wead. He sacrifices a lot of his public he-man/hero image for this role.

      It was a good gig to be one of John Wayne's sidekicks. I think Curtis was in at least a dozen Wayne movies, and then slid into the Festus role on Gunsmoke as the comic relief.

    This clip plays a little fast and loose with the facts, of course; typical of Hollywood dramatic license. No, Spig Wead did not invent the jeep (CVE) carrier concept. That had arisen from a December 1940 memo from RAdm. William Halsey about the need for a smaller aircraft carrier type that could be useful for pilot carrier training in the absence of the large fleet carriers deployed for combat, prior to the steady realisation that the CVEs represented an important tactical asset in their own right despite their limitations. Wead, then a shore-based operations officer with the Plans Division, did function to gather information on the feasibility of CVLs resupplying CVs with spare aircraft during task force operations at the time the USS Yorktown was at Pearl Harbour for emergency repairs just prior to Midway. But this plan had already been in development and was later abandoned when the CVL conversions proved to be better ships than expected and thus more valuable as full frontline combat units rather than just ferry vessels.

    John Wayne - could - act, as you can see in _True Grit_ and _The Searchers_ but - he came to make a large number of formula films, his friends have said "for monetary reasons" and that hurt his reputation as he pretty much played the same character in each of them (possibly himself).

      He was a great actor in character roles. And there's nothing wrong with doing commercial movies too. This way he united both art and commerce. He did it all. I recently watch some of his movies again and altough I usually like his character roles the most, depending on my preference at that time, I can appreciate them all.
      I noticed: Even in his action, non-character performances he gave every role some unique details or behaviourisms and on spot emotional reactions so that they are believable. I never noticed this before altough I watch his movies for almost twenty years and would attest myself a master degree in John Wayne :D Every time you watch his movies you can notice more details. He invents something from these parts and plays character so unobtrusive that you just don't notice it. In "Cahill" for example, which is not a big character role, you can see the genuine feelings in his face and especially eyes when he talks to his sons. So he gave even these performances the right amount of depth.
      (And btw I noticed again that he never allowed any negative portrayal or bad treatment of native americans in his pictures that robbed them of their dignity, unlike modern sjw always state that he was racist...)
      In my opinion this union of commerce and art with this overall career makes him one of the first class actors of Hollywood's history. Many great character actors play numerous parts for money and play what we would call "themselves". But John Wayne must have been a different character in life. I've read some biographies about him. He was a very intelligent, complex, intellectual man. So I'm not so sure about him often playing himself. He invented a persona so successfully that people mistake him for that.

    • @BobSmith-dk8nw
      @BobSmith-dk8nw 3 роки тому

      @@Sven_E07 Yeah. I would say that there is a lot of truth in that. He certainly knew what he was doing and he could act when he wanted to - which would include in movies he made for the money.
      The thing is ... that a lot of his movies were _formula_ movies. Hatari, Hell Fighters, The Green Berets, most of his westerns, were movies where there was John Wayne - and his band of characters. There was the young guy, the old guy, the funny guy and the girl. These were the kind of movies he made "for monetary reasons".
      Here - he had a fan base - and he gave them what they wanted. His fan base WANTED movies like that. But - True Grit and - especially - The Searchers - showed that he really could act. The Searchers is one of the best westerns ever made and his role in that is superb.
      I think you may have a point about him being more intelligent than he got credit for so that he wasn't actually playing himself - but playing this persona he had created. Another very intelligent person is Arnold. When they were first casting The Terminator, he was offered the role of he hero - but - he saw that he would be much better as the killer robot.

      @@BobSmith-dk8nw You're right about them both.
      And there are more. I recommend "The Shootist". His performance becomes more and more intense towards the end. The two partings of Books and Bond, the eerie stare of his eyes in his last gunfight, especially as he gets up from behind the bar to shoot Cobb... All the details, like when he lies in the barber's chair almost looking as if he was lying on his deathbed as the undertaker sees him through the window. Great movie. No actor ever had a better last one.

      @@BobSmith-dk8nw And about the formula you're right. I just watched El Dorado. I liked it very much, reminded me of my first time seing it too, but it was formulaic. Very good nontheless, it doesn't take itself too serious either.
      Many actors like De Niro have these commercial, formulaic movies. But then again I try to envision Hollywood landscape without these movies like Hatari etc. that you mentioned and must admit that a big hole would appear.
      Everything has it's purpose. That's how I see it. Sometimes I like intellectual, artistic stimulation, then again just seing the actors play or watch a good, entertaining movie.
      Now I look forward to rewatching "Red River" and "Sons of Katie Elder". And "Wings of eagles", which I never saw yet... I'm on a John Wayne rewatch trip these days :D

    • @BobSmith-dk8nw
      @BobSmith-dk8nw 3 роки тому

      @@Sven_E07 Yes. I should be clear that - even though they were formulaic - a lot of these movies were entertaining and some were a lot better than others. So - Hatari and Hell Fighters were entertaining (which is what they were made to be) but - The Searchers - is a *_GREAT_* movie.
      El Dorado
      en.wikipedia.org/wiki/El_Dorado_(1966_film)
      is the best of three movies made by Howard Hawks - with a very similar plot. Basically it's about a sheriff defending his office against the bad guys. Of these three - El Dorado - is far and away the best. In El Dorado and Rio Bravo - the plot is that John Wayne has a friend who is the sheriff of this town - but while he was once a good sheriff - he gets his heart broken over a girl and turns into a drunk. In El Dorado the Friend is played by Robert Mitchum and "the young guy" by James Caan. In Rio Bravo - the Friend is played by Dean Martin and "the young guy" by Ricky Nelson ... Dean and Ricky were both good singers and Dean was in a lot of movies - but they were no match as actors for Mitchum and Caan. I enjoyed watching El Dorado ... the other two ... not so much ...

      True story (mostly) and one of the awesome movies Duke made with Maureen O'Hara. See that chart on the wall behind 'Spig'? That prop is the real deal, showing the build and projected completion dates of members of the Essex class of fleet carriers, 9 (as I remember) of which were laid down before WWII began, with part of another chart, light carriers, just above it. And of course this scene is where 'Spig' gets the idea for the escort carriers (CVE) or 'Jeep' carriers from an innocuous comment from his friend. Not historically accurate, as LordZontar points out, as Adm Halsey really should get the credit for that particular idea, but as to their purpose, I think 'Bull' (and 'Spig') got it just right.

      Perhaps one day a movie will show how Wayne and his supporters systematically blacklisted and destroyed the careers of those who served in the armed forces as journalists and fighters. What did they do to deserve such persecution? Nothing much, I guess. They wrote about freedom, liberty, compassion, mercy, empathy, and blessings for others while self-righteous hypocrites who never fired a shot in war defend America accused them of being traitors.
      As the winds of national fear and suspicion began blow, the House UnAmerican Activities Committee began its reign of terror across the land. Now fear, hate, suspicion, prejudice, and intolerance became politically correct. Then a courageous journalist, Edward R. Murrow, decided enough was enough and fought a mindless fanatic, Senator Joseph McCarthy, and won.
      I know of no better propaganda film for the Viet-Nam War than Wayne's "The Green Berets". I was stationed in Ft. Gordon, GA and viewed with a disgust that I still remember. The brass knew it would be good for the troops heading into those jungles, and the troops believed it enough to volunteer to die for an illegal war. Guys too young to vote were shipped off to die and and maybe return home with damaged bodies and minds. Wayne made a lot of money on that movie while a lot of my buddies filled the VA hospitals and grave yards.
      Today, we face a new foe, Trump is his name, and making fascism politically correct is his game. Now you can try i blow it out your . . .

      He was to old to be drafted, married with 4 young children. He could have volunteered but they wouldn't take him as an officer and he didn't want to be a private. He always regretted that he didn't volunteer but - his family was a major factor in that.
      Clark Gable - was older - and turned down until his wife pulled some strings to get him in before she was killed in a plane crash. Gable was brought in as an officer for the purpose of making a movie. He flew on several bomber missions they didn't want him to fly on. When his movie was done - he was to old for them to do anything else with him - so they released him from service before the end of the war.
      Jimmy Stewart was a year younger than John Wayne - but single. So - he did enlist but was subsequently sent to flight school and made an officer. He flew over 20 missions and eventually retired as a General in the Air Force Reserve.
      Frank Sinatra was diagnosed with a medical problem and rated 4F by the draft board. He never lived that down.
      Ronald Reagan served but since he was an actor - in his case, they used him to make training films.
      Eddy Albert was a junior officer commanding a small group of landing craft at Tarawa. He was decorated for rescuing Marines that were wounded.
      You have all kinds of people who were actors or athletes, each with their own situation. Many did serve but a number of them didn't for various reasons. Of course - you had a number who were not actors before the war. Lee Marvin was in the Marines and wounded on Saipan.

      So - problems with the studio could certainly be a consideration - but - think about this .... John Wayne enlists in the Army to go Fight the Nazi's - and his studio sue's him over breach of contract ... Just how long do you think that company would have stayed in business as NO ONE and I mean *_NO ONE_* ever saw one of their movies - ever again? They would be LUCKY if the public didn't mob theaters showing their films, take the reels off the projectors and burn them. There is simply no way in hell - they would have dared to do that. Not in the United States during WWII. And - what kind of reaction would they have gotten from the Government? What would the FBI have done to them? The IRS? What would the President of the country have done to them? Sue John Wayne for enlisting in the military to go fight for his country? No - that - is right near the top of - things which would NEVER happen.
