I love watching the old footage of railways such as the S&D. Since this program was made, some small sections are now re-opened, in preservation. However. the opening, emotional commentary on the demise of the railways is frankly laughable. The lorry "rules the road" because it's cheaper to run, much more flexible, and, now, as in the 1950s, less prone to strike action. "We", moans the narrator, took no notice of BR's attempts to get us back into trains. That's because "we" (much of the population) had bought our first car, and were enjoying the freedom and flexibility that the automobile provided.
And now we are coming to the end of the oil age , with not even a steel works to make the rails , how the mighty have fallen !

A lot of change in life is not welcome. Having to adjust to it can be difficult. Sad to see it happen for sure. 🇬🇧😞🇺🇸
