BOOST VOCABULARY with English DICTIONARY

- Опубліковано 30 чер 2024
- In this video, I'm talking about why you should consider using an English-English dictionary instead of translating words from English into your native language, how to use a monolingual dictionary to learn English vocabulary effectively, and I'm also sharing a few of my favorite English dictionaries. If you're an Intermediate English learner or higher, switching to an English-English dictionary will make you a much more efficient English learner. Looking up English words and expressions in a monolingual dictionary will boost your vocabulary and grammar, which, in turn, will eventually lead you to fluency in English. Stop translating and start thinking in English!

Do you often translate from English into your native language?
I usually do it to check my sentences. If Google Translate translates them into my native language correctly then other people will understand me too. :D

@@LadyGiraffeEnglish 😊 you know while I'm reading i translate to my longuage Arabic in my mind 🤕
@@amazirlahmouz7798 That's totally normal. You need some time to transition from translating to understanding everything you read in English. Give it time. I'm learning Dutch, and after a year of studies, I still translate Dutch words into English, and it's going to continue for a while.
@@LadyGiraffeEnglish in your mind?
@@amazirlahmouz7798 Yes, with Dutch, I do translate in my mind, though I'm really trying to learn to understand as much as I can from the context.
Reading from a Kindle helps a lot because it's so easy to look up words in the dictionary.

My dear teacher, I recently compared three dictionaries, which are Oxford, Longman and Macmillan, to find out what is the easiest and simple to explain, and I found that Macmillan is the easiest and simple.
I'm glad you found the perfect dictionary for yourself! I'll check it out. I haven't tried to use it in 10 years or so.
thanks so much

Could you tell me please if you use the paper version of Cambridge dictionary? Does it have exactly the same content including all the idioms and phrases + words???
I rarely use it anymore, but yes, it has all the important bits like idioms, common mistakes, synonyms, etc.
I like it 😀
Thank you for watching! 😊
My favourite one is Oxford.🥰
It's a really good dictionary! I dedicated my last two videos to it.

Hi,I am looking for a dictionary that defines the meaning of synonym words like wonderful stuning perfect fantastic..?
If a word has any direct synonyms, any dictionary will probably show them. Sometimes, you'll get a list of more loose synonyms and their meanings, like here: www.ldoceonline.com/dictionary/perfect (scroll down to look at the thesaurus).
I'm looking for a dictionary right now... I'm studying to be a teacher of English and I don't know if I should buy the Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English or the Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary. Which one do you recommend? Thank you!
Do you need a dictionary for yourself or to explain the meaning of new vocabulary to students? A learner's dictionary is probably better for the latter, but any dictionary from a major publishing company should be fine.
@@LadyGiraffeEnglish Yes, I need it for myself... I gravitate towards the Longman so I'll probably get that one.Thank you so much!
@@milagrosalvarez4438 Love this dictionary! You might find this video about it useful ua-cam.com/video/_NS2JbMLFXo/v-deo.html.

I use english-english dictionary, but sometimes I have problems with no translating spanish to English in my head 😂😌
Good job with using a monolingual dictionary! 👍🏻 With practice, it will become easier not to translate. Translation is not a bad thing, though, and I'm relying on translation most of the time in my third language (I'm far from the intermediate level yet). You'll get there. 🙂
Keep on, trust me that s so powerful to use English English dictionaries

I haven't taken this exam, so I can't give you any recommendations. How about checking the official Cambridge books?
Do you prefer Cambridge or Longman?
I use them both, but I like the Longman dictionary a bit more. I compared these two dictionaries in this video: ua-cam.com/video/pHBqUFkyQfE/v-deo.html.
