  • In this (and the next!) video, I'm talking about every single method of learning English vocabulary I have ever tried, and about the pros and cons of each strategy. Is learning lists of words with their translations an effective method? Are flashcards really that useful? What are the best methods to improve your passive vocabulary? What about active vocabulary? I'm answering all those questions in this video (Part 1) and my next video (Part 2), and I'm speaking from my personal experience of studying English for 20 years. All I can do for you here is to tell you what worked and what didn't work for me, and your job is to experiment with a bunch of learning strategies to figure out what works for YOU.

Have you ever tried flashcards (Anki, Memrise, paper cards) to learn English vocabulary?

Thank you dear for this video! I've watched your second video before this and I think the methods that youshared in the second part are more efficient.
Me too I use old fashioned method but I love it even though time consuming

The methods were described pretty much in chronological order, so yeah, the second part is definitely better!
I love how you're not afraid of learning strategies being time-consuming. 💕 Quite a lot of people want to learn the language through "hacks" and "tricks", without putting any time and effort into the process.

I have been using anki. in my opinion it has worked to expand my pasive vocabulary and that's all. but what i want is increase my active vocabulary since i'm preparing myself for the b2. this has helped me to see what is more suitable for me thanks

Anki can be used for expanding your active vocabulary if you're supplementing working on flashcards with USING the new words.
I'm happy the video was helpful to you! 👍🏻

Please, how many English words do I have to memorize in order to enjoy reading a book in English?
Longman Dictionary defines it at 9,000 words

You can start reading books in English with WAY fewer words known. I read from a Kindle, and it's so easy to look up new words in the dictionary embedded there without disrupting the reading process. Just pick up a book that is not very difficult, like a children's book, and then, after finishing a few of them and boosting your confidence, you can move on to more complicated books.

@@debjyotichoudhury4989 I don't have a lot to say about this dictionary to warrant a separate video. 🙂 It's a really nice dictionary. Any paper dictionary from a major publishing company should work for you.

Hello, looking for the next part to see how you write down words on your own way. I am not a big fan of AnkiApp either And it’s not free for me😊

    • @LadyGiraffeEnglish

I use the desktop version of Anki, and it's free. But if you want to review words from your phone, then yeah, it's not free for some phones.
I'm planning to make a long and detailed video about the method in the near future. In Part 2, it's going to be a short overview. 🙂

Can you share your Anki flashcards??

    • @LadyGiraffeEnglish

It's probably more effective for learners to create their own personalized decks with words that make sense specifically to them.
