- Born Again is Sabbath’s eleventh studio album. Released in September of 1983, it’s the only album the group recorded with lead vocalist Ian Gillan, best known for his work with Deep Purple. It was also the last Black Sabbath album for nearly a decade to feature original bassist Geezer Butler and the last to feature original drummer Bill Ward (sans for two tracks on the Reunion record in 1998). Featured the hits “Trashed” and fan favorite “Zero The Hero”.

I don't care what critics say.
This album is awesome.
What do they say? I think it's awesome too. Was it badly reviewed?
@@Argi1000well they say it is shit.

This album is beyond beautiful. A metal masterpiece!
Nobody screams like Gillan, not Roth not Halford. Noone!
Si. La voz de gillan hace brutal a la sabbath
Hard -Heavy
copy that yes !
And I can't imagine having a different sound or production. It's part of the charm and overall atmosphere of this album ! I won't deny I'm curious to listen to a remixed version from the original tapes with a "proper" sound ! But I think it's hard to top the whole unlikely chain of events that led to this album, mix/production included ! My favourite Sabbath album
In my opinion, this is Sabbath's, and Ian Gillian's, finest hour. Heavy, dark, trippy, and the undeniable howl of Gillian. Their best album ever.
I can figure Sabbath with Ozzy and even Dio, but Gillan's high-pitch voice lifts BS and this record to the category of Epic. Tony's riffs are equally sharp, resembling Gillan's falsette, like a second voice. Just great.
Respect and Metal! ☠🤘🏼
BS is right. Gillian sounds out of breath.
@user-zs3xo1bv8f naaah lol
I prefer the albums Tony Martin did. All around, I like his vocal style better. He can sound like Dokken, Dio, Coverdale, and Gillan at will. This album is the darkest, nastiest, dirtiest sound Sabbath ever did. The most evil sounding, which you would think a band named Black Sabbath would shoot for. Alot of that credit goes to Ian Gillan. The demonic screechy falsetto is perfect, even if a little overdone. You can't sing that way being out of breath. You might not like the way his vocals are mixed, but there is no way in hell you can sing like that and be out of breath. Zero chance. Zero.
The very last album with Gillan's voice high pitch , great ❤😊
@@rockroll575 what about Toolbox?
As a Deep Purple fan I like this album. It's just more material to enjoy.
I just made the comment I always thought this sounded more like a heavy Deep Purple than Sabbath, but either way it's a really good album.
Deep Sabbath...Black Purple. It's all good. This album has been amongst my list of guilty pleasures since '84.@@tonyrayjames3526
I personally love this album. Hard, heavy sounds, pure metal riffs that set the standard and an immense Ian Gillan. A great album that can still be listened to at maximum volume today 🤘👹🤘
The people that dissed this album weren’t listening. Still banging this on the vinyl that I bought when it came out!

The only way to listen to BORN AGAIN is on maximum volume... One of the Greatest Albums of all time... :)

@@rob5723 They may have listened to it one time, or listened to a couple of songs, and made their judgement. BORN AGAIN needs to be played as loud as possible, and listened to many times, from beginning to end, before someone judges this album. A fair amount of BLACK SABBATH Fans dismissed the album, without giving it a fair chance. With me, I only had to hear the album one time, (when it came out) and I judged it as a great album, and have listened to it many times throughout the years... BORN AGAIN is a Masterpiece, that needs to be listened to as loud as possible for the best listening experience... :)

Gillan says recording this album and touring with the guys was some of the best times of his life, and you can tell they were having a blast here. Great Sabbath album.
Hmm.......................in that case, why didn't he stick with them after this album?

@@davidl570 Deep Purple reunion. Though if that didn't happen, I imagine there would've been a second album with him and Bev Bevan on drums.
This is my favorite Black Sabbath album, an absolute masterpiece!
Cult status album. Gillan is on top form and his singing is an overkill. Iommi´s tone is sharp as a slcalpel. What can you say about Geezer and Bill? Perfect. Production? Well, this is what we got, no need re mixes. Dark, dirty and everything metal is about, incuding that amazing artwork! screams Heavy Metal!
agree with you totally!
I for one am interested in hearing what the band intended to sound like, but of course - you are right, this is what we all know for decades and what helped shape the sound of Metal in general. Brillant album, never get‘s old.
@@jamessullivan2030This sounds like Deep Purple... Not Sabbath
El metal es un subgénero. Black Sabath no es Metal es el fundamento del Hard Rock y Heavy Rock.
Gillan is far from his top form....his early days with DP (69-74) were his peak.
One of the best metal albums ever recorded. Ward, Iommi, Butler, and Gillan are all great.
Probably one of the best sabbath album that was misunderstood
Eh, While there are a few good songs on this album like the title track, Trashed and Zero the Hero, I really don't think Gillans voice fits Black Sabbath at all. He sounds great in Deep Purple though, but here it just sounds bad to me.
Maybe one of the best heavy-metal álbuns ever... Black Sabbath's guitar, Bass n drums fit Gillan's Voice nicely.
Indeed. Totally.
Not only is this album misunderstood it is also controversial I remember back in 1986 or 87 the members of Black Sabbath for question about the lyrics in this album in front of national TV and I believe it was a Phil Donahue interview shortly after tipper Gore started the pmrc thing not only did the TV interview consists of the members of Black Sabbath it consisted of Dee Snider of twisted sister Ronnie James dio, what are the members of iron maiden all those guys were questioned about the subliminal messages in there music almost all the show was had the annoying beep another words that show was all swearing and cussing by all those heavy metal band members and let's not forget Paul Stanley who immediately flew off the handle when he was asked if kiss stood for Knight s in satins service I would like to know if anybody on UA-cam knows how to find that that complete TV program from back in 86 or or 87?
Bought this when it came out, outside of the first track hated it. Every few years I give it another listen, coming to the same conclusion. I guess I've misunderstood this album several times over the years. Wanted to like it so bad but I just hate it. Possibly the most disappointing album ever for me. Maybe you can fill me in on what I don't understand.
I am VERY VERY happy to report that this year Iommi has announced he will finally release a cleaner remix of this album...!!
And the Tony Martin albums that I really enjoy.
He did? I though there is no new information about the remix since 2020.
Keep Geezer and the base mix away!!!!

QAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA THANK GOD, THIS IS TERRIBLE QUALITY
Einer der besten Alben aller Zeiten ❤
Das glaube ich auch
Gillan's uncompromising vocals fit perfectly with the demonic music of Black Sabbath. It doesn’t have the pathos inherent in Dio or the clown-like stupidity of Ozzy, whom I also respect. But GILLAN is incomparable!!! During this period, his voice was especially powerful in the project of the same name. I recommend listening to everyone who missed it for any reason. Thanks to the creators of this masterpiece album!
In my opinion Ian Gillan is one of the most dynamic rock singers of all times! My first 2 hard rock bands Black Sabbath and Deep Purple combined! Freakin awesome!
Ian gillan voice is perfect
This tour was jus my 2nd concert I been to in 83. So lucky to see them an Ian Gillan an Tony wer awesome together. Best damn Sabbath album.
I'm 53; the same age as Metal itself. My earliest memory is joining the "KISS ARMY" in 1975. I bought the first Venom album as a new release in 1982. I entered the studio myself for the first time 5 years later. Metal has been the one constant in my life for 48 years. I'm not rich, famous, particulary smart or hansome, but I know my way around Metal history. That said: "Born Again" is the best Black Sabbath album.
I appreciate your loyalty to Sabbath. Not their best album but it does kick ass.

Disturbing the Priest is Gillan's best vocal performance. He sounds like the Devil himself

@@Promark1980 Maybe not Paranoid or Sabotage. Other than that ( And the first album) Yeah, I do.
@@constantine7382 fair enough. I just don't dig the production and vocals on Born Again.
@@Promark1980 It was different. But I've always been a Gillian fan and I thought Tony's guitar work was outstanding.
I saw them on this tour @ Denver hockey Arena with all these different players from different bands.Lita Ford opened. It was just one of my favorite of so many concerts.
This album is fantastic!!!
This was the only tape I wore out playing on my old Sanyo walkman. Great setlist when they toured for this album
this album is a masterpiece no doubt! thank you sabbath!
I was lucky enough to see this tour! They had the huge Stonehenge stones on stage we were like “WTF” then lights out and smoke filled the stage and this red light back lit the stage and then these this yellow lights at the front of the stage looked like the gates of Heaven. Then Sabbath walks through Hell with this ominous walk and they start rockin Children of the Grave. Gillian nailed what he needed to. Wish I had all my concert shirts this one bring a hefty fee!
I never understood the hatred for this album. The sound is the closest to the rawness of Sabbath´s first four albums in the Ozzy era. The tracklist has a few fillers, but also some of my favorite songs Black Sabbath ever did, like Trashed, Disturbing the Priest, Zero the Hero and Born Again. The overall atmosphere is of a dark brooding heaviness that only Sabbath could achieve. Ian Gillan´s excellent performance is so over the top that some say he shot his voice with this album. Born Again is easily one of my favorite Sabbath albums.
I hate to break it to you but even Black Sabbath hated that album.
The songs are awesome but the sound ruins it even for the band.
They were appaled by it and still are.
The good news: apperently they did find a tape of the album *before* the sound became ruined.
So hopefully one day there will be a true remaster of this album and then it will earn its name!
@@user-oo3vz2gt6vHonestly this sounds like something you'd hear with a local metal band, a decent one but nothing you'd spend money buying their album unless you were friends with the band. It's not all gold just because it's old, compared to the 2 prior Dio albums, trashed is pretty aptly titled.
@@WillelmMacguyver Oh yeah, as always in music you can like it or not.
Personal taste.
But im maainly speaking about the sound and how it came to it.
Ian Gillan blew a bunch of speakers during the sessions and for whatever phantomable reason nobody noticed it.
And thats what we are with now.
To me its one of their best albums but only because i can hear what i do belive it should sound like and then its killer.
Just magine it with Dios voice and youll get it more i think. And then you will like Gillans voice as well maybe.
And im saying all this as someone who got introduced to the entire world of music in general by Black Sabbath with Dio and especially the Heaven and Hell album.
Those two things changed my life forever ;)
Also i think ... overall ... 13 is maybe their best album ... and i think Ozzy is maybe the worst singer they had over all.
Even including the Eternal Idol to Tyr phase which i just hate.
But i *love* his solo stuff.
Crap, why do i wrote that bloody much this a post and not a letter 🤣
In addition to the production... that whole affair (IG & BS) got over the heads of most of the fan base.

Sabbath has this ability to create otherworldly sounds that are unapproachable by other bands.
They're not from this realm of existence obviously they're all gods. They melt zep and Floyd's faces off esp this album with Ian basically purple and sabb together. But better than Ozzy fronting purple.
