For cutting square holes (or to square-up existing holes) I recommend a nibbler tool. Air and electric powered versions are most common, but you can find hand-squeeze versions from $10-20 and work well on thin sheet metal like on that trash can.
Oh Moy... you should continue living dangerously and blast sawdust everywhere and clog up your filter. :) Seriously, I did the same thing on my dust bin and it is very handy. Sometimes I forget to check when I'm planing a lot of lumber. To that end, I removed the filter and vent my unit outside to improve airflow. Now when I see sawdust pass by the window I know my bin is full. LOL.
Nice addition Moy! There's been more then one occasion where I have found my dust collector overfull. Great idea.

A die grinder and a disc would have been a good tool to cut the square hole, but hey, you figured it out and it worked so that 's all that mantters.
