The Jam perform "Absolute Beginners" for Radio 1's B15 in October 1981.
Lyrics:
In echoed steps I walked across an empty dream
I looked across this world, there was no one to be seen
This empty feeling turned and quietly walked away
I saw no warmth in life - no love was in my eyes
I stared a century thinking this will never change
As I hesitated, time rushed onwards without me
Too scared to break the spell too small to take a fall
But the Absolute luck is - love is in our hearts!
I lost some hours thinking of it
I need the strength to go and get what I want
I lost a lifetime thinking of it
an' lost an era daydreaming like I do
I stared a century thinking this will never change
As I hesitated, time rushed onwards without me
Too scared to break the spell too small to take a fall
But the Absolute luck is - love is in our hearts!
In echoed steps you walk across an empty dream
But look around this world, there's millions to be seen
Come see the tyrants panic see their crumbling empires fall
Then tell 'em we don't fight for fools -
'cos love is in our hearts!
I lost some hours thinking of it
I need the strength to go and get what I want
I lost a lifetime thinking of it
an' lost an era daydreaming like I do
You can lose some hours thinking of it
You need the strength to go and get what you want
You can lose a lifetime thinking of it
And lose an era daydreaming like I do oooooooo
Is it me or is Bruce Foxton literally one of the most creative bass players ever? Unbelievable bass line in this
B foxton is an unbelievable bass player trouble is like most bass players and drummers thay never get the recognition like lead guitar players and vocalists
It's not you. He is brilliant.
Yes….yes he is.
Badass!
Bruce is my favourite bassist. He added a lot to the jam, especially when they were 3 piece
There will never be another band like the The Jam
He's in full Marriott mode here with his chops and shapes. Magic
Absolute classic. Fucking brilliant band, one of the greatest of all time.
NQAT. God I miss bands like this. My kids are listening to shite these days from bands who can't play instruments and can't sing
Language Timothy!
Weller never got that the jam were a chemistry..... Buckler's drumming and foxtons bass playing and harmonies brought out the best of the songs..
True. Weller's songs were, and are, pretty simple.
Who remembers the smell of the record cover on this single when it was brand new it was a really strong and was the first time I'd ever noticed it on a nnew record.
Tune from back in the better days of life and music 🎶 🙌 ❤
I'm from Peru and it's really weird in a funny, unpleasant way that this band along with the Buzzcocks and the Stone Roses are not well known over this side of the Atlantic ocean. I only discovered this band 6 years ago and it became my favourite ever!
Cool paint job on Mr Weller's Rickenbacker. Such an awesome tune.

The greatest band in the fuckin world never a truer word said
I remember recording this on my sisters radio cassette player one sunday afternoon when broadcast. Sweet Soul Music on this session is a killer track.
Never heard this version before but like it, especially the vocal.
It was 4 swop shop r sumit on a Saturday I thinking 🤔
I like the roughness in this performance. Such a tune.
+Azif Yudkno greeeeaaaat tune - some kind of white funk ... ???
Pretty sure they lip-sung?
It's mimed.
What's "lip-sung"?

Foxton’s bass is on another level
12 months later, and the news of the split was out. Saw them at wembley arena , dec 1st.big country support.
If Big Country supported them, I’m sure they was a great show.
@@jasonelliott7977 yep. We didnt know it was big country as they hadnt released anything..but the guutar sound was very much stuart adamson.
Now that’s what you call a fucking band. Can just get up there with their stuff and play. Love it.
Utter brilliance PAUL RICK AND BRUCE
Intense song!
It's a live studio recording for Radio 1's "Studio B15" from October 1981. The full version is available on the album "The Jam at the BBC".
Sparks? I think their early stuff is a drug... I can't find a detox!
And what a drug;-)
It is obviously a live recording, and a great one. But they are lip syncing on this footage. The drummer is playing eights in the verse while sixteenths are being heard.
Artists weren't allowed to just mime to a recording because of Musician's Union rules. The BBC wouldn't want to have the group play live in a TV studio because the engineering was expensive and the artist might not like that either because the sound might not meet their approval. Live when broadcast would be even more expensive, and risky.
So the artist would record a fresh version of their work in a sound studio. In this case Radio 1 'Studio B15', October 1981; where the quality of the recording could be ensured. In this case, horns were added.
Then the group was booked to play Swap Shop and the group mimed to the available recording. That satisfied the MU because musicians had been paid to play. Nobody minded about the absence of the horn section but someone thought the group should have some amps and plug in.
Of note is Weller's use of the Whamm Rickenbacker. It had originally been a jetglow 330 (notice the instrument's head is black) and it's neck had been broken. After the neck was re-set, Paul said it it didn't play that well and the Lichtenstein drawing was hand painted. It wasn't a factory finish. So the Whamm instrument was relegated to TV work like this.
WHAM! 💥
It just doesn't get any better, 2020 and knowing it just doesn't get ........any better
Great 😊Top of the Pops 👍💕
thank you very much! i went to check on my demos/alternates albums, didnt checked the BBC one. cheers!
Top tune from a top band😎🎸👍
I remember getting out of bed cos Saturday the boys were on swap shop ? .
I grew up in the early 80's and missed this entire thing. We lived in the NY area and I would watch the late night music shows before MTV... no sign of these guys. But I grabbed up any of the new bands I could get my hands on... Squeeze, Clash, Police, etc. --- I didn't discover these guys until I hit college.... I could have used them in my youth.
They were my life as a mod still have my Vespa and lambretta, they was the best band in England at the time , best wishes from the UK
Times were & still are tough, but for me I liked & still do like P.W's political/social lyrics
Back then only Town Called Malice got any play on MTV, and not a ton of it.
Try finding this stuff if you lived in Australia, nothing released or on TV till about 1980, I just imported everything from 77 on.
They used to play them on the college Station in New Orleans which is where I heard them; I bought Sound Affects on cassette in '81
👍👍🎸🎸👍👍
Absolute tune
FAb!
Love how Rick plays 8ths when the track is 16ths - classic British hit parade miming at its best..happy, happy days 😀👍🏻
I was waiting for someone to point that out
Haha. Even PW's chords don't correspond to the sound. Why BBC made them mime when they were so great live I don't know.
It's mimed.
It's to do with time constraints for the show. @@atakd
Paul Weller rules - then and now!
Sweet
Yes it is well spotted! It's just there for something to look at really.
Pretty much at this point in their career the Jam were the best band of all time - even with the horns playing flat on this track...
Some talent weller no stopping him , neck and neck with Kevin Rolland ❤️👍
Maxwell Mccracken we just want to be your friend Rolland
that version of absolute sounds really nice. the guitars are very clean. i wonder what version is that
too much looool !!
Recorded same time as Tales from the Riverbank on Swap Shop?
Then tell em we don't fight for fools....
The video is from Swap Shop 1981
Why i woke up on Saturday to watch Swap Shop!!! ;_)
Is that Terry from Minder on drums? 😉
No.
Are they lip syncing to a demo track? Where is the horn at?
The sound is live, I know cos I recorded it when it aired, studio B15 with Richard Skinner officiating, the video is from another performance of the track, probably a euro mime for a clog or kraut top pop show, so two versions melded
It was a performance on Multi Coloured Swap Shop, Shaking Stevens was next .
@@mcfairclough Obviously you were on the edge of your seat for Shaky when this lot came on!
The sound does not correspond the image.
It was recorded from radio.
Ужас. Эта песня вообще не поддаётся какому-либо переосмыслению.
Она гениальна авторски.
RICK BUTLER LOOKS LIKE DENNIS WATERMAN OUTA MINDER
Foxton should have left that Rick alone, lol
I adored The Jam, still do, but while Weller's work after the break-up contains some good songs, in my opinion, most of it is just derivative Soul meanderings with weak melodies.
24 days after my birth
That ain't live.
Yeah the sound sounds live, but i'd wager it's a studio version made to sound live.
for a few reasons..... firstly the drum kit isn't mic'd up.
second, the vocal is far too consistent for the variation of PW's position.
Where's the horn players?
never mind lip or guitar sync.
still a good recording though.
"The sound is live from Studio B15 on Radio 1 and the video is from BBC's Swap Shop with Noel Edmunds. "
That explains a lot!
@@rallyboy101 exactly.
@MusicalElitist1 oh no..... i'm goin to kill myself !!!! what a fuckin liberty....... shame on you the marmalade
You are 100% right.
In a way, this WAS live, but it just wasn't live when they recorded the video to it.
No, it's mimed.
