  • The #oscar winning #screenplay for #americanfiction by #cordjefferson asks important questions about #culturalsensitivity in the #us in the #21stcentury . These same questions were asked by #zoranealehurston all the way back in 1950. This century's attitudes have caused a reevaluation of the work of #alanlomax (a champion of #ethnomusicology #folkmusic #folklife #folklore and #folksongs ) who made early recordings of the #blues (#bluesmusic ); preserving the work of #leadbelly , #muddywaters and so many others. This video looks at how altered definitions of Cultural Equity today have primed Lomax's work for a second look.

I think he did a good thing by making the recordings, I would aregue they are priceless for historical value alone, let alone the actual music. Though his motivations and methods are questionable. I am torn on " cultural appropriation " because to me it is a sign of the cultures blending, people accepting other ways, but when someone takes something and claims it as his own I can see where people take issue.
Edit: when I say priceless I am not talking about $$$

I think you may have missed the point. The video doesn't say that he's criticized for cultural appropriation. The problematic part of his method is that he recorded Black people in prisons; not churches, not HBCUs, not barbershops. As the Smithsonian curator says in the video, his idea of "authentic" Black music is imbedded in, "offensive stereotypes - African-Americans are criminals are illiterate. They are not serious, they are not smart. That 'authenticity' is rooted in having that kind of vision of what an African-American can or cannot be." The music that he saved is music that puts Black people in the worst-possible light in the eyes of White people. That's why his work is tied to the screenplay of AMERICAN FICTION.

@@KnowWhat-1234 I believe I got the point, I just added the cultural appropriation comment because it is loosely related, especially relating to music. As far as it put black people in the worst possible light, I don't disagree, but they were black songs, with black artists and I believe there is historical value. Was there exploitation? Probably (most definitely) That's why I said the methods and motives were questionable. I always believed if something is recorded, good or bad, it can be used as a learning tool. Not to mention, I bet bet much of the stuff recorded were songs with a deep meaning to the artists and players, though the white producers may have manipulated the play lists, they still show a window into the lives of black people at the time.

I completely lost interest in this movie as soon as I found out they're blaming white people for these stereotypes. This negative self-imagery is perpetuated by the in groups even more so than the out groups in this day and age.

The humor was partially about how too many white people believe the stereotypes.
