As a former trumpet player of 13+ years from middle school through college, watching him sit and really explore on one half-valved note and just groove the octaves like that made me so resentful of my instructors. Purposefully sitting in between pitches like that was considered "playing around" and not "true music". I love that solo so much.
I’m an old fusion guy, and this band gives me the love 100%. Saw them live twice. Best live band I’ve seen, no contest. Mike League, the composer and band leader, is one talented fella.
We Like It Here is the album born from this session. The drummer (Larnell Lewis) was a last minute fill-in and learned all but a couple of the songs on his plane ride to the location, where he had a day or two to rehearse with the band before recording. It brings joy to my heart to see that real talent and commitment to excellence like this still exists in the music world. Great reaction! Lingus next! Cory Henry’s keyboard solo will melt your face off. 🤣
@@Asiyahearth17 I got the impression from the documentary that it wasn’t that tight time-wise (although even 2 days would be amazing), but it wouldn’t surprise me. After seeing that vid where he hears a song once and composes the drum part on the spot, I wouldn’t doubt that one bit.
I have goosebumps right now!! Absolutely FANTASTIC!!! Trumpet was INCREDIBLE, and reminded me of Miles Davis. The percussionist and drummer were both incredible. Very cool and very well orchestrated. BRAVO 👏🏻
Justin Stanton’s trumpet solo on this piece keeps bringing me back to this song again and again. I’m a huge Snarky fan and have listened to damn near everything they have posted on any platform. This song is my favorite. The band is amazing both in the studio, and live. You will smile a lot as you descend down this rabbit hole.
Justin Stanton played the trumpet solo. He is also a featured keyboardist for the band. Nate Worth the percussionist is a BEAST. He and the main drummer for Snarky Puppy Sput Searight formed the band Ghost Note as a side project. Check out their work on the Zildjian Live videos.
@@JonathonThamesMusic thanks for the reaction videos. It is obvious that you both enjoy and appreciate good music and your commentary is entertaining. Keep up the good work!
Whenever I listen to this song and I get to 3:09 with the start of that trumpet solo...I always get taken to another place, like I just pulled off an upset in an old-school cowboy duel...the crowd is stunned into silence...and there I stand, chest out, pistol still smoking...in all my glory, dust settling around me, my face up to the sky, eyes closed, letting the warmth of the sun wash over me.
Thank you so much for checking out the video! LOVE your vivid description of the imagery the music gives you when the trumpet solo starts, that sounds awesome! :)
PLEASE listen to Outlier off the same record. Doesn’t get any of the reaction buzz this song does, but is absolutely phenomenal. Exactly what you’re looking for, King Crimson and Return to Forever inspiration is overwhelming. Absolutely loved the reaction, man. It’s great seeing someone so physically engaged in the music!
The pups are awesome. Lingus in a must listen to track from this same session. Did ya notice all the guests in the studio listening to them on headphones? That's a cool environment for them to jam in.
your response to this is the same as mine. it takes me to another place. this song played a part in getting me into better shape - i would play this on repeat while i run and workout, and i basically sprint/burnout once it gets to that climax. this may be my favorite piece of music period. love the video, thanks for covering
Very cool! Also some Dream Theater influence. The cycling keyboard riff about 2/3 of the way through is almost note for note from Falling Into Infinity.
If I didn't know and love this band already, your enthusiasm while listening is so infectious i couldn't help but love them now :) glad you are enjoying them
Thank you so much for checking out the video! They are such a fantastic band! I've only checked out the four tunes I've reacted to so far on this channel, but I can't wait to dive in deeper to their catalog. Any tunes you'd recommend in particular?
maaaan love your review, that so many youtubers that make review and pause the vid every 5 sec and don`t make one face! I just love that u don`t pause and love your stank face, u re realy enjoyng the music! keep the nice work! cheers from brazil!
Thank you so much for watching! I feel like I really need to hear a track from start-to-finish uninterrupted to really grasp the full extent of the emotions or feeling the song is trying to convey, so I usually don't like interrupting a song to comment, but try to make mental note of it so that I can talk about it afterwards.
I absolutely agree! I had the amazing opportunity to catch the Zappa Playing Zappa tour with his son Dweezil heading the band covering his dad's tunes, and it was absolutely phenomenal! 🔥🤘 I also can't believe this band somehow managed to slip my radar up to this point, but I'm extremely happy they were recommended to me. Thank you so much for checking it out. 😊
Thank you so much for checking out the video and for the recommendation(s). I've got parts 1 and 2 added to the list and look forward to checking them out soon.
Sir, these musicians are masters of their instruments. I suggest 'Lingus' (with a mindblowing keyboard solo from Cory Henry), 'Sleeper' en 'Outlier' ... all from the same session. Everyday I go online to see if ANYONE has reacted to Snarky Puppy. This is REAL music and we need more of it, lots more. Today I was in luck, Jonathon Thames Music got himself a Puppy ;-) Thank you for reacting to these magicians, I'm sure we both will be back here very soon.
Absolutely! I am completely blown away by the fact that I hadn’t had the pleasure of checking these guys out prior to this point, but I definitely need to hear more! THAT is musicianship at its finest 🔥! Looking forward to checking more out, and will definitely be sure to give "Lingus", "Sleeper", and "Outlier" a listen. Thanks for checking it out! 😊
Thank you so much for checking out the video! I got those phones a little over 2 years ago -- they were affordable and have served me VERY well so far :), so definitely a recommended purchase.
Thank you so much for checking out the video! It would most certainly seem so lol! These guys are freaking amazing; I've only had the opportunity to check out 4 tunes of theirs as of this point, but definitely looking forward to diving deeper into their catalog.
Check out the Russian version of Michael League's writing COMBINED with Corey Henry's level of playing in ONE PERSON... Valeriy Stepanov: Try "Hold Onto Hope" one of his compositions, played with his brother on bass, and the amazing Russian guitarist Roman Bondarenko... - ua-cam.com/video/qq2tu-vAOns/v-deo.html Stepanov's right hand has to be cybernetic to arpeggiate like that... This guy is somehow the world's best kept secret of Jazz Fusion MASTERY as you'll find DOZENS of his compositions all with HOOK, and him playing with a who's who list from Bondarenko to Martin Miller and even Alex Hutchings as well as with Chick Corea before he passed away! He also does covers ranging from Lyle Mays to Michael Jackson!
Thank you for checking out the video and for the recommendation! I've got "Thing of Gold" on the list, and look forward to checking it out at some point in the near future for sure!
One thing I will say is some of the audience are guilty of "enjoying-jazz-whilst-trying-to look-cool" I know, because I have been guilty of that in the past.
Now this is music for grownups! Aside from all the other songs recommended so far, I would add "The Curtain" to the list; one of their more "beautiful" songs, but I describe it like a jazz symphony.
I highly recommend falling into the UA-cam trap of Larnell Lewis on drums. He is unbelievably amazing. The more you see and listen to him, the more amazed you will be. Humble and an amazing musician.
I will really recommended you to listen to Sleeper and What about me from this particular album . It's such a shame I only found out about them last year. One more thing, i will really recommend you to listen to their 2012 album "Grounds Up" amazing album, It's on the top of my list Thing of gold, binky, Quartermaster, Young stuff. You'll love them Cheers!
Thank you so much for checking out the video! I really dug "Sleeper" and definitely look forward to checking out "What About Me?", "Binky", and the other recommendations you've given. I've added them all to the list and look forward to diving in soon.

I have watched a lot of reactions & some people are just downright annoying, stopping every 10 seconds to say something deeply profound 🙄 thankyou for not doing that & waiting til the end to comment.
The guy playing the trumpet solo, usually plays keyboards, just an example of how multi-talented this lot are.
Justin Stanton - and he writes and arranged some their songs (including this one).
Shofukan was written by Michael. Justin Stanton composed Outlier

And Michael League plays the bass (CRAZY GOOD) for his day job?
That was phenomenal. I love 50's Bop jazz, 70's fusion jazz and New Orleans jazz , this a bit of all. I had no idea they still made music like this
This is fabulous! I've just recently discovered this group and really love it.
You should listen to a live recording of this. Hearing a whole crowd sing the vocal parts is just the bee's knees.
