I bought my Yashica T4 (the "Super D" version) in 2001. I thought it was lost for good following a move, but found it a few years back. Perhaps because it was used so little, I haven't experienced any problems when it comes battery drainage or light leaks. Vintage camera prices today are truly surprising. I've owned my Leica M6 longer than the T4. I can understand the Leica holding its value, but not the prices some are willing to pay today. By comparison, the prices the T4 is fetching today are mind-boggling. But I do enjoy the images the T4 produces, especially considering that it's a point-n-shoot camera.
I bought my T4 after being turned on to the book titled "Drive By Shootings". This book features the photography of a cab driver in New York City. He shot all of the images in the book using a T4. Most of them taken from his cab - while driving. Thus the title of the book.

I have one and it's in perfect condition. It has been a great camera. It will grow on you. Iso 400 film is what I use. It works really well since the aperture is quite slow. Lens is super sharp and I never had focus issues with mine, but I have a feeling quality control could have been somewhat inconsistent at the time they we're manufactured.

I've found the biggest thing with the T5 that I have is the metering system. I've never had a bad exposure after putting through 10+ rolls. There is definitely also something intangible about the lens, maybe it's the micro-contrast you mentioned but it's definitely nice for that small package.

The frame lines in the lower right corner designate that that's the field of view of the lens at close range. The whole VFframe is used for general photography; the lens 'sees' a wider field when focused at infinity or further than its near range. The transition from one to the other is smooth, of course, not sudden.

I don’t really know anything about the camera. But 3 weeks ago someone was selling a canon A1. When I met him at his house the A1 seems to not work properly. Then he shows me some other camera and I saw the Yashica t4 super. Mint condition. He sold it to me for like 50 $
As I live in a island, New Caledonia we are far from the crazy price of this camera but I was surprised to discovered that it was a popular and pretty expensive camera.
Si basically I have the Yashica t5 with me all the time along side my ricoh gr or my x100f

Was going to chime in on entire VF being normal & lines being parallax but others covered it. I had the T4 Super with the tiny waist-level VF. Shot it for my project but didn't fall in love & sold it. Try a Stylus Epic (Mju II) - great little f/2.8 camera which also has the dork-with-the-flash-every-time-you-turn-it-on "feature". Tri-X in HC-110 rocks, just leave it in the soup a little longer for more contrast. Love the channel.

I actually repair these cameras and two things you said are red flags it's dying. The fact that your re-spooled film was yanked back too soon is because the gears need to be re-greased. The extra friction causes it to believe the roll is finished before it really is and thus ends it early. This is a common problem in many compact cameras. Also, your battery should not be draining fast when not in use, most likely the circuit has a failing diode. You can leave the battery in one of these for months or longer without use if things are properly working.
