Oh man.... I just tried this method with a bunch of rusty old hooks that I was molding and YOU SAVED ME SO MUCH TIME! I love this method. I'm now going to try filling a box with old star wars figures lying on their backs and see if I can make "Carbonite bathroom tiles". Perfect technique for this project!
Thank you so much for putting these videos online! I've spent more money than I'm willing to admit getting materials and trying stuff because these videos inpspired me, hahaa! Please keep posting videos like this.
I'd like to use expanding foam to make a glass fiber/carbon fiber insole, more specificly to fill the hollow space underneath the arch support. Unlike to what one might expect, the foam should not be flexible, but rigid and lightweight, while supporting the weight of a runner. Which one would you recommend, if weight saving/strength-to-weight ratio is the major concern? And do you think mixing foam with chopped fibers could increase the siffness of the material?
Hi there! These are great questions for our tech support team, can you send them a ticket here? www.smooth-on.com/support/ticket/add/agree/ Thanks for watching!
I've asked this before. I'll ask again. Would you do a video or two on SHOE SOLES and soft SHOE INSERTS? Also could this quick foam be used as a buffer between the rubber sole and the shoe itself? Would it be crush resistance? Would it hold up to every day use?
Which Foam-it would you recommend for protective guards/ducts for a FPV drone? I am looking for a foam that is mostly rigid and holds it shape at at thickness of 0.5-0.75in, but won't crush/crumble under high impact, but will flex under high loads.

I wonder if this would be useful in making foam casted parts for aluminum cavity casting. Make the foam part, bury it in the casting sand, fill it with the molten aluminum. Would this type of foam vaporize like styrofoam?
Thanks for watching. I would not suggest melting this foam away with molten aluminum. The styrofoam or what you are currently using is going to be a better choice.
Thank you for this video, I learn a lot every time. I've done a lot of experiments with cold casting (dusting the mold method). The hard part is trying to varnish or clear coat after because it will loose it's shine after a week or two. I have tried different products but everytime I loose that metallic effect, have you got any sucess on this ? Another thing is that cold casting gives much better results with harder resins like the onyx rather than soft resins like smooth-cast 57D.
If the water is less than 90* will the working time increase or decrease?.....If I'm not mistaken.......didn't some of the earlier video's show that the metal powder had been mixed with the part "B"?
I noticed the link doesn't work for the Accu-Cast Bucketgel 390 Alginate, perhaps they don't carry it anymore, can you recommend one that will work like the one shown in the video. Thank you @@smoothon
Can these foams be used as rifle stock infills? Like you make a carbon fiber, aramid or fiberglass outer shell and fill it with foam-it? Thank you for your video!
Does Smooth-On have any less rigid and very stretchable foams, something akin to the kind of foam latex used in making those expressive "Planet of the Apes" style make-ups? How does the product compare with actual foam latex?
Love you tutorials!!! Is this foam super impact resistant? Needing to mold some gun props that are durable and thrown around and can look as good as the orginal picking up all the details . Or would you recommend another foam?
project video suggestion: tool shadowing (for tool inventory), small stuff like; sockets and ratchets. like making your own blow-molded case. The mold will be the finished piece rather than using the mold for casting.
I've had issues with Accu-Cast staying damp or even wet attempting to do this. Will platinum cure silicone be susceptible to that? Any advice on getting the Accu-Cast to dry out?
I have never thought about using Alginate as you did. Excellent.
Monster Clay melted in a slow cooker works too, and is re-usable :)

Love the Flux Capacitor in the background.
Thanks! What time do you want to travel back too?
Very good video, those look amazing. Thanks.

Could you cast the foam directly into then alginate ?

James, our Flexfoam-it! 17 or 25 would be most suitable for this. As for the shoe soles / inserts video, we have it on our list to look into.

@@smoothon Yeah, I figured that out already. Went for the styophene expanding beads method to make a part for casting

is that a flux capacitor on the machine in the background?
Shhhh. 😀
What is strength difference foam it 1 vs 8? I’m assuming the 5 is not very strong

Time will decrease with higher temps
A few questions, Can you paint the foam prop? Can you reuse the mold? Thanks
You can paint the foam with standard paints, and the mold can yield hundreds of castings.

Our Alja-Safe pourable alginate would work for this: www.smooth-on.com/products/alja-safe/
Can these foams be used as rifle stock infills? Like you make a carbon fiber, aramid or fiberglass outer shell and fill it with foam-it?
Thank you for your video!
Absolutely. Many of our customers use our denser 8-10 pound foams for this application.
@@smoothon thank you for the reply.
Is a respirator necessary when casting/working with Foam It! 10?
A respirator is not required if the material is used with room-sized ventilation.
Thank you so much for this video!!!! It's super helpful!
How much would you say it expands? Should you only fill something halfway or less than half?
Expansion rates can be found here: www.smooth-on.com/product-line/flexfoam-it/
Does Smooth-On have any less rigid and very stretchable foams, something akin to the kind of foam latex used in making those expressive "Planet of the Apes" style make-ups?
How does the product compare with actual foam latex?
It would depend on the firmness used. Can you send us a tech ticket? Our team can help you - www.smooth-on.com/support/ticket/add/agree/
Would the alginate prohibite Dragon skin silicone from curing?
As long as the water used in the alginate is free of contaminants, the Alja-Safe will not inhibit platinum silicone.
Great help to innovators
Thank you for watching!

Great idea!
Is that foam archival ? If used I fine art will it last and not break down over time ?
Can I use Accucast 390 bucket gel for flex foam it x
Foam will not cure properly in alginate due to the water content in the alginate.
can you do it any size
Certainly, many different sizes can be made.
Would this work on a brick? Thanks
It would, if the brick were properly sealed. ua-cam.com/video/fqj61nnvxdY/v-deo.html
How can I substitute the glass rod
Yuu can use a wood or plastic dowel
Hello! You can make a video on how to make polyurethane tires for a radio-controlled model. thanks!
This is a great idea! We will forward it to our video team.

I don't want to use alginate. What other smooth on silicones can I use for casting Foam-it?
Foam-iT! foams can be cast in any Smooth-On silicone such as our Mold Star Series.
I've had issues with Accu-Cast staying damp or even wet attempting to do this. Will platinum cure silicone be susceptible to that? Any advice on getting the Accu-Cast to dry out?
Platinum silicone is not affected by moisture.
