I'm just learning about this so I've been watching a lot of UA-cam videos. And you are the only person that is talked about not touching the tool and just letting the paint make contact rather than the tool! That's a game-changer! Thank you
I totally agree! I was going to post the same comment. I've only been learning this for about two weeks and I was getting so frustrated that my dots were not as smooth and symmetrical as what I was seeing on other's works. Now I know what I was doing wrong. Thank you so much for saving me hours of frustration!!!
You are the only one who clearly shows consistency and how the paint should drop from the tool. Thank you, I was doing it all wrong, now I'll move faster. Thank you
Thank you so much!!! I’ve been struggling with dots for a long time because I was putting the surface of the tool right to the paper. Doing it your way I’m on my way to the perfect dot!
Thank you for describing the actual tool technique. It's exactly what I was hoping to find! A technical note on acrylic paint - it's water soluble, not water based. It's polymer based. The medium (clear body) is a form of plastic, in which pigments and fillers are suspended. For craft projects, thinning acrylic paint with water works okay. However, introducing water to acrylic paint weakens it. If someone wants to create an archival quality painting using this technique, they should either use a pouring medium to thin heavy/medium body paints, or start with a fluid acrylic like your black bottle paint :)
I have been looking for a beginner's video like this about dotting! I am excited and say Thank you because I now have an idea of what I am doing incorrectly... very excited to start practicing after this
I just got my rocks painted black and tried using tube acrylics right out of the tube for dotting and was very disappointed with the results. Your video explains what to do about that and shows super clearly how much paint to use and pressure to apply (or not apply). Thank you for being so concise in your explanations!!
I'm only a third of the way through, and I already have to say this is a fantastic video. Answered the questions I had, and those I didn't know I needed to ask. Thank you. (And fantastic camera work too.)
Love you teaching style. Much appreciated. I have always admired painted dots. I have a picture in my mine, but did not know where to start. Thank you.
I’m eager to try this for myself as I was given a dot painted rock as a gift. It’s really beautiful. Thanks for the tips for beginners, I’ll try to use some items around my house for dotting tools. I just hope my hand is steady enough 😊❤
Glad it was helpful! Make sure to check out the links for Mandalas if that is the design you are going to try. Lots of helpful information to check out :)
Endlich habe ich als Anfänger ein Video gefunden, das erklärt, wie man perfekte Dots bekommt, vielen lieben Dank dafür 😍 ich war schon nah dran, es aufzugeben !
Really like your instruction and tips. I wanted to learn dotting. Bought all supplies, however got discouraged when my dots were not the best. I gave up. Now...I am going to give another try. Thanks again. Happy Doting ● ● ● 😊
This video helped me so much I have been trying to find a lot of videos like these and you were the only one that I found so far that I actually really learned from and liked and enjoyed watching !!!! You are awesome thank you so much keep making these videos because you are great at it lol ❤
Well, that was a tube, not a bottle. They have different consistencies. And I use a thinning medium as I have found using water makes my dots crack while drying.
At the hobby places, they have those little plastic cups ,with lids. Six or eight are attached. You could mix your tub paint, with the water, and save your paints. They are $2.00 for 12 or 16. ,,,just a hint! Kathy
I started painting with acrylics on pbn’s & then just have found my medium! Now have so many different paint colors & as never done dots painting, ty for a simple (easy to follow) video showing how to do it properly! If hadn’t watched this know would have touched the surface w the tool & think it’s my fault & can’t do it! Like trying to do wet on wet water colors on copy paper & wonder why your paper has curled up & dissolved!
I love your DIY dot making equipment suggestions! I bought a set of various sized makeup brushes for use on an art project. They didn't work, and I haven't been able to come up with a use for them. Voila! Thanks to this video, I realize if I flip them over I have a set of dotting tools of all different sizes!
This is a great beginner video! Like several others here, I am just starting with dots, and was touching the surface with the tool and not getting round dots. Better now that I know not to do that. My question on consistency: you mentioned thinning the paint, but mine appears to be too thin. It will not "load up" on the tool. I googled some solutions (cornstarch, gel...) but what do you suggest? Thanks!
Yes I suggest it to preserve your work. I have quite a few that I have used. They are listed here: rockpainting101.com/best-sealer-painted-rocks/ and there are also some tips, especially if you are spray sealing in this post for you 🙂 rockpainting101.com/how-to-seal-painted-rocks/
Thank you for the great tutorials, you make it so easy to do! I see you dotting with your tool kind of sideways, is that the correct way? I always thought you we’re supposed to place your tool straight up and down? Thank you!
With the ball style as long as you are dropping it straight up and down it doesn’t matter where on the ball you hold the paint. Some other styles of dotters that are more flat you would have to hold vertically. It is all what works best for you ☺️
Hello, your video was great. I wanted to let you know about something totally unrelated but comes from heart and good place ❤️ It’s about your short tooth that you have which soooo reminded me of my short tooth I had. I went through a lot with my teeth until one dentist told me he can just do bonding and add some material to it and make it look bigger. the whole thing was easier than filling about 30 minutes and cost 100 or 200 bucks. Anyways just wanted to let you know about that because your teeth reminded me of mine ❤️❤️❤️
I am unable to get the symmetry of the circle and am not able to position the dots correctly .After drawing g the circle how do I place the dots? On the circle ( drawn) or outside the circle .
If your dots aren't coming out symmetrical you may be pressing down too hard with your dotting tool or your paint isn't the right consistency. As far as placement. I would work right on the circle when you go to play your dot the drip should land right on the circle and then you press down slightly to make the dot. Your tool shouldn't actually touch the rock.
@@RockPainting101 Ok ,that was a useful tip.I shall practice more ,follow your instructions and see how it turns out .Coz I am very fond of mandala and am unable to get it right 😭
Some of the acrylic paints, especially neon’ or glow in the dark paints are too watery, any suggestions for thickening? I tried ‘Liquitex’basics acrylic loss heavy gel’ but it gives a weird almost ‘sandy’ texture. I’m new to this, and my work is sloppy looking but I’m hoping will improve with practice…
You could always put down white dots and then top with your colors so that they still show. I don't have much experience with thickening paint... usually I'm thinning it if anything.
Most mandala designs that you are seeing the dot circles are actually painted out from the center slowly. So while you are curving your line as you go, you really are using the dot toward the center to guide you. I know that may sound confusing... here is a video you can check out! ua-cam.com/video/qzuvfP2Oq7o/v-deo.html

I agree with that and I too am just beginning and appreciate your tips! They're extremely helpful! ✌😊💚
True, you are only explained what exactly dot paint tools works and how much thicken paint should be use . Aww, sorry I couldn’t give 100 likes
Agreed!!! I had no clue about not touching until i saw this video. Thank you so much!

I am looking to learn Dot Art as I want to Dart Art on my leather drum bag that I made from deer hide.😊
I would practice on other surfaces a bit first... I'm not sure how it will adhere to fur. It may effect how the paint lays down.
Thank you

Hi there, I love this video thank you!!!! What is the name of your green handle dotting tool. It's nice and big and can't seem to find such big ones.
It is from a dotting tool set. We have it here in our Amazon shop - amzn.to/2UNZ6v5

I would suggest investing in better paints to start with. If they are thin when they dry you will see through the dots.
Thanks for your prompt reply!

My mom and sister have the exact same smile so unless we all do it together I’m gonna have to keep it lol :). I’m glad you enjoy the tutorials!
Ottima lezione!
A me non piace quella piccola punta che rimane in rilievo quando appoggio il dot per creare i punti... come evitare ciò?
This was very helpful to me. Thank you sooo much 👍👌❤️
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching :)
Great video.. Thank you so much.. 😃
Glad you liked it!
10:15 note to self
Can you add water to the paint so it’s more ?pourable
As long as you are using acrylic paints. A little bit can go a long ways so add slowly.

Hi dear
What kind of material can I use for the background of dotting art?
You could do a solid base coat with acrylic paint if you want.
I have plastics design sheets but I don't know how to use them??
How do you know you are dotting in a circular line
Most mandala designs that you are seeing the dot circles are actually painted out from the center slowly. So while you are curving your line as you go, you really are using the dot toward the center to guide you. I know that may sound confusing... here is a video you can check out! ua-cam.com/video/qzuvfP2Oq7o/v-deo.html
After you dot on canvas (using acrylic paint) do you need to seal it?
I don’t have a lot of experience dotting on canvases but I would probably seal it with some sort of protecting coat. Even if it is matte.
The placement of your dots on that surface is hard to see the peaks. Why didn't you use a clean paper?
I know this is an older video but thank you.
You're welcome!
I have plastic design sheets but I don't know how to use them
I’m not 100% sure what you are referring to... are they just for practicing? Maybe?
My dots collapse in the center and crack as they dry. How do I stop this. It ruins the project.
That sounds like a paint problem.. are you paints old?
Why not oil instead of water?
Acrylic paint is water-based. Oil wouldn't mix in...
Aent you clever
when dot painting on a glass bottle , is there a certain sealer to use when finished ?
I do not have experience with this so unfortunately I can't advise you on that.
This told me that I don't have what it takes to be a dot artist.
Oh don’t say that. A little practice goes a long ways…
I wish your camera angle was better and you used a plain piece of paper instead of that scribble all over, but thanks, learnt a few tips.
Did you watch once I moved it down low? I had to have the paint in frame to mix before I showed it from a lower shot.
What if we use poster colours?
I'm not familiar with the term "poster colours" is this a different style of paint?
* Noo Tools
For Dot Painting you need tools
Do you use brushes? I know some do but that takes a lot of practice...
You were purposely getting messy when you were touching it full to the piece
Geepers this lady can talk! Good grief. This could easily have been a 4 min clip!!!!!!!!
We have a "Shorts" playlist if you prefer quick content. We even have a 3min tutorial playlist if that is more your style...
