THE KETTLE MORAINE 100 - Not According to Plan - 2019

  • Sometimes I am my own worst enemy. That proved true at the 2019 Kettle Moraine 100, the first stop in my journey of the Midwest Super Slam. Watch me implode, learn how not to run 100 miles on almost no training while injured, and don’t follow in my footsteps. Seriously though, my hope is that by making this video, I can help someone learn from my mistakes and have a better race!
If you have questions about the Kettle 100 or the Midwest Super Slam, let me know what they are!

The video doesn't do that storm any justice. It rained hard and turned the course into a mud pit. It turned so dark in the woods, I had to get my flashlight out to see in the middle of the day. DNFs happen, you do enough of these over time and you're bound to get one. It's more about how you respond to a DNF, what you take away from it. I think it's awesome you're attempting Mohican, with a better game plan, taking away lessons from Kettle and applying them. Mohican is a beautiful course. You got this Ryan!

I feel ya, it's disappointing to look back on, but I really think that it helped prepare me for future challenges. Like when I hit a real bad spot again at Hallucination 100, I knew i just needed to keep moving forward even after I hadn't had any calories for hours, I had past experience to rely on and that I didn't want to repeat. Good luck with your next race!

Ryan this was amazing! I mean it sucked you had to drop, but you dropped for the right reasons, your health. The whole time I watched your video as you were self analyzing yourself I was like, yep, yep, predicting what was going to happen next and it happened. I knew your nutrition would fall off as the fatigue and stomach issues settled in. Same, same for me when I dnf'd Javelina Jundred 100 mile. At 50k nausea hit and wouldn't let go. By 80 miles I knew I was in deep nutritional trouble and dehydrated from not keeping fluids down. You did the right think, keep moving forward and running smart!

I appreciate the honesty in putting yourself out there; furthermore, I'm sure this wasn't the easiest video to share. However, it was still inspiring and as others have mentioned I learned from it. Make adjustments to both the next race and your goals for the year. 100k on a day when you couldn't keep anything down for hours is significant!
From the video, it appears your Salomon vest has considerable bounce. I've not been thrilled with my Ultimate Direction vest and was considering the Salomon - would you recommend it? Good luck next race.

    • @RyanClaytonFilms
      @RyanClaytonFilms  5 років тому +2

Thanks Michael, I really appreciate it. You're right, putting this video out there is about the last thing I wanted to do. The Salomon vest does have a lot of bounce, but it's not really that noticeable while you're wearing it. It's an older model, maybe 5 years old? I think the newer ones addressed some of this. I tried them out, but decided to stick with this vest for at least another year, I'm just used to it.

I slipped at precisely the 200th step of a flight of 574 steps going down part of a 704 meter hill. I knew I sprained my right ankle, fell to my left side, but otherwise seemed fine, and I started running down the remaing steps after I get used to the pain. I finished that training like with an egg stuffed into my right ankle in the evening.
Two days later, two-third of the egg was gone and I took a 10K track jogging to see how things were.
While the ankle seemed (I hope) fine, I had to walk the last K because of acute pains in the left knee ~ and it didn't signal anything from and since the fall !
I stopped all jogging but the pain in the left knee pushed me to see an orthopaedist who promptly sent me into a MRI.
The cruciate ligaments and meniscus were both injured and I have to do operations to fix them as soon as there is an operation room ~hopefully within this week.
So, never ignor any "little things" when you started to notice them as they may cost big moneys.
Good luck and good running again soon ~for you and myself.

Hey ryan! Sorry your race didn't go to plan. As an ultra runner myself, we've all experienced some sort of breakdown during a race.
Hope you see this message for the Mohican. Just a tip. You shouldn't rely on gels and powders for nutrition during these long races. Overloading your body with these sugary, salty and electrolyte enriched products can cause your stomach to be completely broken. During ultras, I rely on real foods and use gels and powders as a last resort. I like to carry things that sit well with my stomach which will vary for you. For example I carry fig bars, trail mix, dates, and raisin bread. Then I use the aid stations for other foods. In my bottles I only carry water. Hope this helps. Good luck and have fun at Mohican.

I've been through the same thing. 10k, I ran the first 5k the way down too fast and the last 5k cramps on both legs, dehydrated and at the finish line I fell and was taken by an ambulance. how about your NB100?

Maybe more real food like you did at Run Rabbit Run. You had good success there. Less gels?

Maybe, the other thing is that RRR had actual climbing, so plenty of time for things to digest. Kettle, was just so flat, running was the only thing that felt right. Definitely learned a lesson. Thanks!

    Still very inspiring!
See you at Mohican as I attempt my first 100 miler. Pick me up if you see me. :) You'll do great, man!

@@RyanClaytonFilms good luck! Also, fun fact: my buddy Todd Chandler makes a cameo at the start, around @3:44 holding the gimbal, wearing the green/blue hat.

At least you have it your all. Maybe take a step back and focus on recovery, rehab and building your mileage. You seemed to be severely under trained for a 100 miler

You over think the run. Just run. Stop thinking you need to eat every hour.

Thanks for the tip. How do you manage nutrition during your 100 milers?
