Thanks Mike. I didn't salt last year and I probably wouldn't have this year if I hadn't spotted the injuries on the fish. Have you been watching 'Only Fools and Horses' by any chance?
Cracking update there Jim . Hope the showa and kohaku recover well and that formula for the salt will be used by so many people as you say its a great way to work out the volume on irregular ponds or even square ponds . Keep warm and well fella 👌👍👍👍👍👍
Cheers Davey. I'm confident the salt will do the trick for me. I put the salt method as a formula because I thought it would be an easy way for people to remember it. As you say it is the best way to work out the volume of an irregular shaped pond. It also includes your water in your filters which can be hard to do.
Cheers Jim, some useful detail included regarding calculations involved. Hope your arthritis improves for you. Congratulations on six months off the fags. I know it doesn’t feel like it maybe at the moment but right thing to do. I did it and although tough for a long time I feel so much better for it now👍
Thanks Paul. I'm beginning to wonder if some of my health problems are to do with prolonged use of my of the nicorette qick mist sprays. Financially it's definitely the right choice to make. The sprays are about half the cost of tobacco and once I can stop using them hopefully I will feel the difference. Well done to you for staying off them. I know from past attempts how easy it is to relapse back into the habit.
Cheers Dave. The weather certainly doesn't help with the arthritis. I thought putting that method down as a formula would be easier for people to understand how to do it and maybe record it down for later.
Thanks Simon. Hopefully I will be building a bigger pond next year. Small ponds are fine with really good filtration but when something goes wrong it does it very rapidly. With larger ponds you get a bit more of a buffer before things turn to crap.
@@MrSmithy63 I have an idea in my head but it will depend if I can move my shed and also whether there are drainage pipes running under where I want the new pond. Of course the money situation will also come in to play too. If it goes ahead it will be a good series for my channel.
Thanks Pete. I stopped the day after my birthday so it was an easy date to remember. Are you using any aids with your battle? I've passed my longest attempt now so fingers crossed I manage to stop for good. I have been tempted a few times but I think to myself, like any addict, if I slip at all then I'm likely to fall off the wagon and fail. So far I've resisted the urge. Well done on your 2 months. The earlier days are definitely the hardest. I thought by making the salt measurement into a formula it would be easier for people to make a note of it that can always be referred back to. Hopefully people will find it useful.
We are all addicts 🤣, addicted to koi now rather than nicotine. I went from no cigs to a vape for about 3-4 week, then 2 weeks on patches and nothing since. I still have the odd day when I think I could do with one, I just think the longer you go without one the easier it is to tell yourself no 🤣
Nice update Jim feel for you with the Arthritis the last few days mine been very painful. I always thought my pond volume was about 1000 gals but some ware along it seems I have about 800 so I have used treatments and over dosed Have a happy Christmas and New Year 🎄🎄🎄
Thanks Carol. Even the most stupid things can cause you pain with this arthritis. I just twisted to turn the light off and got immense pain in my shoulder. I have to be careful what meds I take because of the bus driving. I can't take anything that is likely to make me drowsy. It's surprisingly common for pond owners to overestimate the size of their ponds. At least with this method you know for sure (well you do if you don't make a mess of it and lose count of how much salt you're adding like I did lol) of what your pond and filters contain.
Hi Jim, hope you start feeling better soon. You might find this UA-cam video clip useful, This is the same set up I have only my pump is outside the pond. Hope this helps 👍. ua-cam.com/video/Qnxb1j3FP_M/v-deo.html
Cheers Paul. I did watch it from your original comment. Unfortunately YT blocks comments with links in them. I have to check the 'held for review' section to find them.
@It's What I Do Hi Jim, one thing I did with my retro drain was to take the bottom plate off because it kept clogging with leaves and weed between the plate preventing maximum equal suction around the drain. Mine sits on the spacers and it works a lot better. I also found waste food would get between the plate and the liner which went rotten. Because it now sucks straight from the pond liner it doesn't get blocked and the suction is really good and I get no muck collecting on the bottom of the pond. As you get muck still collecting it might be blocking the bottom drain as mine did. Retro bottom drains are great but still have issues with weeds and large debris like plant waste. Have a great Christmas 👍
@@paullee3727 I'm getting the crap now because I took the bottom drain out. I need to get it put back in. I never had any problem of stuff getting stuck in the drain though. It all used to get stuck in the entrance to the pump.
Good video Dave I did a salt video few weeks ago def worth doing over winter
Well done on the smoking all the best Jiffster 👍🏼👍🏼

Hi Jim, great update and some useful info Never mind size of your pond your koi are growing big , you have everything right

That will be good to follow the new pond build , do you know your plans for it yet ?

Nice one Jim, 6 months quit is good going, I think I'm just over 2 months. Good info on the salt equation too, that will come in handy 👌🏼
