Oh man, so stoked that you're doing this! You're literally one of the only UA-camrs I trust for dance reactions ;___;
The song itself was supposed to be a full MV, but there were some things in the post-production that Lay wasn't satisfied with so the visualizer is here (hopefully!) as a placeholder until the MV is perfected.
The guy who choreographed this was Huang Xiao from Hello Dance Studio, one of Lay's team members in the show Street Dance of China 3 & 4. The whole show itself is SUPER fun to watch and is available on Youku's UA-cam channel - If you just want to see Huang Xiao's other works you can search up his routines (most famous one is Huang Xiao & George/Qiao Zhi's routine from SDC 3 & 4).
Huang Xiao is the main choreographer, yet Lay himself set the style of this dance and also took part in the choreograph work. A lot of the dance moves are inspired from the ancient Chinese murals in DunHuang, which portraits the beautiful dance of gods.
The MV was filmed at an Dunhuang, a very important historical site in China and yes it is a real desert! Apparently the environment created some difficulties and he was not satisfied with the result therefore we stucked with 40 secs visualizer 😭 Anyways, appreciate your reaction! Thank you so much❤️

Yea I saw two of them from Lay’s video too. I thought Qiaozhi was inside the mv as well, but I couldn’t find him in. Hahaha It’s good to join Lay’s team in street dance huh 😆 will GOGO brother & Poppin-C join in Lay MV in the future ? 🤣

Lay Zhang is such an artistic and talented artist! I love all his songs and stage performances. He never failed to impressed me since 6 years ago! I cannot believe there is someone like him that can keep growing and improving and keep giving surprises every come back. I honestly have high respect to him. He is the King of Stage to me!!! I love this latest EP album, all 4 songs are amazing.
Lay did spend a lot of money (heard that the bugget is even higher than lit) on the mv. He flew 150 staff members and dancers to the desert and a well known world heritage site called Mogao Grottoes, also known as Caves of the Thousand Buddhas, to shoot the mv. The Flying Apsaras are often considered a symbol of the Mogao Grottoes, painted in Mogao caves 1600 years ago.
In the dance practice, Lay incorporated many traditional dance moves and gestures painted on the caves. The reason for him to release only 40s is because, as he said, he’s not fully satisfied with the rest of the mv. I really hope he’ll drop the full version soon, but I respect his decision. As we all know, Lay never settles for less.

I just did quick research here. Apsara (English translation: nymph, fairy, celestial nymph, and celestial maiden) is well-known in the Khmer (Cambodia) culture but deeply rooted in ancient Indian mythology. It is a type of female spirit of the clouds and waters in Hindu and Buddhist culture. The Apsara figure is in the sculpture, dance, literature, and painting of many South Asian and Southeast Asian cultures. Apsara portrays as youthful and elegant (that depicts the elegant movement with the choreography), and superb in the art of dancing. It makes sense why Lay chose Apsara for Asian reference ((he have been referencing a lot of Chinese historical figures in the song like Luban (god of carpentry), Wanhu (who became the first "astronaut" in space, but got exploded and died), Kuafu (a giant deity who wished to capture the Sun but failed to do so), and Chang'e (moon goddess who steals an elixir of immortality from her husband because she wants to live longer)).
Maybe he chose Apsara not only because he has this burning passion for dancing, but he wants to fly high "who are the ones who hold up the sun." Only the king can hold/stand up the Sun. Remember in Lay's Lit, he did say "I am the king" "I have the crown, I got the power you know it." This is another lowkey diss track towards haters. He referenced these gods and they all mean similar things. Lu Ban (the god of carpentry) has this common idiom: 班门弄斧 bān mén nòng fǔ - literally, “to brandish your axe at Lu Ban’s door." This is used to describe people who unwittingly boast their small achievements in front of those who've set the bar. It's like haters think they are the better dancer and saying that Lay is sucked at dancing or something for example. Wan Hu, who is being too ambitious of wanting to get close to the star, so he built this "rocket" chair for him to fly up to space, but ended up losing his life. Haters are like that, they are getting too greedy and selfish by dragging him down to prevent him from reaching the top and they thought that they can be on top over Lay, but ended up getting annihilated because haters gonna get their ass sued. Instead of building this failed rocket chair to fly up high, Lay uses dancing to "fly."
Apsara dance is not easy to replicate or to dance to. It takes rigorous training that usually starts before the age of 10 and lasts for up to 15 years. This requires lots of strength forming in the legs to perform highly complex body movements as well as enough flexibility in the hands to bend their wrists and fingers in every direction with ease (like you don't have joints). Just like the ethereal spirits, they represent, Apsara dancers move very slowly, yet gracefully, resembling heavenly goddesses floating amongst the clouds. So basically, his dancing is like flying. The more he continues to dance, the higher he flies up to reach the Sun.
Every dancing move he made has a meaning, if we could translate the lyrics and combine it with the moves he made then we will have a clearer idea of what he wants to tell us. The thing I'm impressed is how he changed from krumping to traditional styles, it's not just good skills but how you look when you made the dance moves, he looks just powerful as well as elegant and artistic, so he could go both ways - powerful or soft, I think a good dancer should be able to dance multiple styles and look good on it(it's their charming point!) The choreo was made by Huang Xiao and he and the Hello Dance Crew did such an amazing job, I hope we can see a live performance of Yixing and them soon
The filming in the desert sand created some troubles for the post production and that is why there is only the 40 second visualizer. I am sad that we might never get a full MV, but just thinking about the amount of editing it would take to fix the sand problem is giving me a headache.

he already shoot a music video but he said it didn't come out as he expected (he kinda upset about it and the burden of lit's success was huge) so he only give 40seconds of it and that's the visualizer so yeah unfortunately we ain't going to get a full mv. But we still hoping he will change his mind or something tho it really looks great

If i am not wrong the place you say if it is traditional dance.I think its a dance called Dun Huang dance.
Dunhuang Dance is dances that originated from Dunhuang fresco in Dunhuang, Gansu province, West China. The Dunhuang dance is a dance form based on the resurrection of the dances in the Dunhuang murals. The curve shape of the dance posture "S" is the most representative posture extracted from the murals. It is the Indian and Greek dance and the Tang Dynasty court. It is a combination of music and dance, and is produced by absorbing and learning from the dances of various ethnic groups in the Western Regions.（Please correct me if I am wrong）

There are soooo many things woven into his concept for this song and the entire EP which also ties all four of his previous albums together hence why there are familiar images. If you listen to the entire EP, it basically tells the story of a boy chasing after his dreams while in search of himself and thus becomes a living legend in the process.

Yixing/Lay was on location at Dunhuang, China, for the visualizer. Some places and inspiration include Yueyaquan (Crescent Lake & Pavilion / not in visualizer but verified by fans he filmed there), Mingsha Mountain (Echo Sand Mountain), & the Mogao Caves (paintings). Some of the pieces built on location include the building @1:40 (modeled after the Fujian Tulou ) and the painting at 1:50 (Dunhuang Mural Painting "A Deer of Nine Colors") timestamps in your reaction video.
Some historical significant contexts: in Hindu Buddhism myths, feitian are flying celestial maidens associated with dancing and music. Dunhuang is famous for its feitian dancing murals. The city is a very important location in the ancient world bc it was an intersection between East and West during the Silk Road and is a major trading and cultural exchange hub. It is important to Mpop (Yixing's/Lay's music) which blends East & West and traditional Chinese instruments with modern music. So how does this correlate to the present? Throughout the history of men, worshipping the sun and wanting to reach the sky has always been an obsession. For China, 5000 years of yearning was finally achieved in 2008 during the Shenzhou 7 space mission. The Feitian spacesuit was developed for China's first EVA ("spacewalk") marking the commencement of the second phase of the Chinese space program. So fans have speculated that the many imageries of the sun in the visualizer is a reference to that longing.

Lay is absolutely spotless. A diamond in a sea of coal. This routine is sick. The control on the slow speed moves is brilliant, the foot work is spot on, the arm and hand work is stunning. And god we love his videos so much, they're a visual feast. Lit was cooler than anything and one of our personal favorite videos of all time, a full MV of Apsares could surly take Lit's number 1 spot with us.
I cannot wait for the drop of the Mv coz its gonna be epic. Lay refuses to release it yet keeping us on tenterhooks becoz he is just not "satisfied" with it yet. geeez! Lay is such a perfectionist.

I love this short mv and Lay’s dance practice too.
Lay and Taemin will always be my forever favorite in terms of uniqueness, creativity and dedication in performance. To the point that you will more excited to see the dance practice rather than the music video itself. They never fails to show their own idea, their own brand and the levels of skills they possess. Their personality is very different when they perform- how can I forget Lay in an exo episode where all his members where crying in tears watching the movie and there's Lay hella sleeping😂😂😂. THIS IS A MASTERPIECE NO DOUBT

Thanks for reacting! I was waiting for someone to point out the circle formation looking like the sun circle in the visualiser since that’s what I’ve been thinking too. Unfortunately there’s no MV yet and only the 40sec visualiser, but I really hope he will release the MV at a future date after fixing it (since he did say there were some post-production issues so maybe it’s fixable but just needs time 😭)
