I clicked on the link and it looks like the fall trip has been postponed to January 2023 - which would actually work out better for us - seriously thinking about it!

Hi Alex, it's so quiet here. Could you please give an update? What happened meanwhile? Cheers, Bernd

is there a vacation along these lines that is not a research trip? A freshwater fish scuba trip?

this would be an awesome opportunity, but I'm having to do at-home dialysis. I could bring my supplies, but I doubt it would be sanitary enough. 😆

Hey, this conservation strategy sounds like an awesome concept, but with one potential snag. How do you motivate the local fisherman - many of whom I would assume live in abject poverty - to fish more sustainably? Doesn't sustainable harvesting almost always mean harvesting less fish in the short term, which would negatively affect these local fisherman's income, at least in the short term?

I'm so glad you asked him this, this is something that is very important to think about in conservation strategies and something that makes a lot of people lean towards captive raised fish. The thing is, this fishery has existed in a sustainable fashion since the 1950's with no changes to the number of fish being harvested due to changing fish population numbers. Export numbers of fish have changed dramatically due to market demand leaning towards the same species of fish produced on fish farms in other parts of the world because they are cheaper to produce and people THINK they are better for the environment. However the fact is that the fishermen target species that are short lived, quick reproducing, and who have boom and bust population cycles related to seasonal water level changes in the habitat. The fish that are trapped in the flooded forest as the flood waters recede generally do not survive to the next season anyway, and this is where the fishing activity is happening. The fish populations year to year are dependent on the health of the ecosystem and cannot thrive alongside environmentally destructive industries. Thus having the fishery provide a predictable yearly income to rural families prevents the incursion of destructive industries that threaten the fishery. People protect the habitat that sustains their source of livelihood, and the habitat renews itself with an incredible 10 meter seasonal water level change that leaves these fish high and dry for the fishermen to pick up.

Hi! This may be a dumb question, but are there scholarships available to fund going specifically for the research aspect? Coming from a bio student, I don't have a lot of research opportunities in fisheries and marine biology at my school, but I'd love to be able to do work with a project like this. I could care less about the luxuries- I just want to do the science!

I takes a significant level of balls to choose rapist glasses in 2022, because you choose to, not because that's the only fashion available, like it was in CCCP in 1980s
