I just snagged a TLA5204 as well. It was completely DOA and with intact calibration stickers that would leave "VOID", if removed to open the device. I opened it up and noticed that the memory module was out of whack and got it running pretty quickly. I have the P24 BIOS so it is just one off from what the latest that Intel produced. The battery was complete dead, but the unit still remembered the PCI setting for the video.
I currently am getting 4GB of RAM, which is the maximum that can be installed. I also am going to try a SATA SSD. While looking at the motherboard, I noticed that it has a few SATA ports on it. This is also confirmed in the BIOS configuration if you take a peek. SATA has much better throughput than PATA, so I figure that between the increased RAM and the drive, I may have a system that is is moderately performant. My particular system came with WinXP, which I prefer over 2000, so that is a bit of a plus.
The biggest concern I have is actually the non-volatile SRAM. I'm not sure if you have found this yet or not. You have to take off the bottom two covers, which is very easy. It is a Dallas Semiconductor rectangular cube. Unfortunately, it is soldered to the capture board, so you'll have to remove the board to get to the module. I would like to change that to a high quality DIP socket.... The problem is that those have a 10 year life retention and we're already over about 20 years! I'm not 100% sure what is stored in there, but it has been suggested that it is configuration data. There is also a report that changing the SRAM out can sometimes result in getting extra options enabled, although doing this manually is pretty well covered elsewhere. I personally think that the nonvol SRAM is probably used for, well, all of the above. It is a 128K x 8 capacity, so there certainly is a fair amount that they could shove into it.
My thought was to remove it and put it into an appropriate EPROM programmer so that you can read the contents. It isn't like a PAL that has a security fuse, so you should be able to read it without a great deal of effort (might need to make an adapter to get pins in the right place). I could then "write" a fresh version of the chip so that I have another 10-20 years of life in it... Have you thought about this or followed a similar path?

I didn't get that far before I had to retire to go out West to take care of my dad. I still have the unit and but I know what you mean about those IC's with the batteries. I have some TDS 600 & 700 scopes with those Dallas RTC's. I'd love to see you post a video on your work. I may not have to the time to work on my stuff now but I always enjoy a good video on electronics equipment repair and use. Thanks for watching, I look fwd to seeing your videos. Best Wishes & Blessings. Keith Noneya

@@keithnoneya Ah! if you are in the Bay Area, we can get your fill of TLA repairs by helping out. :-). I will have to see what I can do about making a video on the repairs. Frankly, I always think of doing this after the fact. The reality is that a lot of the projects I'm involved with are niche things for which there is often little information on UA-cam. That is a shame because even a *little* information can be incredibly useful. I have lots of machining projects with oddball industrial machinery in my garage that are a perfect example of this. You'll find *maybe* three videos out on UA-cam, often with someone in Vietnam or South America so I'm left with a lot of interpretation on what is going on....
In this particular case, you are right. I'm coming up to speed on a lot of little things regarding this logic analyzer. At the very least, I should document some of this stuff on EEVBlog as it is kind of a "go to" place for self-help. I'm a huge proponent of people recycling things and extending the life of otherwise obsolete products....
If I can figure out a decent video setup, even if it has no audio, I will try to make something and put a link here (if you don't mind). My only request is that you not laugh and the poor production quality or the utter mess I have around... LOL

@@Alan-gz1kx LOL ok I'll get my laugh out now. My house is a wreck too so I just stage my video shots to help that. I found a small tripod was a big help. You might have to re-shoot the scene a few times and I found a good plan on what you want to shoot and a topic script helps in conveying what you're trying to get across. I even have my wife spell check and watch my video's, most of the time now to keep the spelling NAZI's off me. The main thing is not to get impatient when doing a video project, and as mentioned a little simple planning before hand limits the re-shooting. A quality script and some good video shots are what make a good video in my book. I live in Southern Louisiana in a town called Slidell. Wish I had time to work on it with you, but I've got house repairs to do. Looking fwd to seeing some good videos on the TLA bud. Just take your time and shoot it as many times as you need to make yourself happy with it. Best Wishes & Blessings.

My 7012 had the same video problem. A new CMOS battery to save BIOS settings would fix most of your issues. Don't forget to set time/date in BIOS. The PS/2 ports will work if you give them time but I would just leave the mouse in USB. You should image the HD and replace it with an SSD if possible. The file system also might need repairs (typical Win2K). The application is always going to be laggy but the machine itself will be very fast if you replace the HD and/or repair the filesystem. You can configure the secondary display in Windows. I recommend putting the HD in 1st boot order for boot time. You can always change it back to boot a diag tool/bootcd. Good series, I'll be watching for your next upload.

Super good advice. I was thinking about doing the SSD. The BIOS Battery is definitely going to be replaced and I too think it's my problem. I don't know enough about repairing the file system, do you have a link to a video on how to do that. Sorry I haven't posted any updates on this, I've been really busy dealing with the usual life issues, cars, family etc. I've never used one, if you have one, it would be nice to see some of these being used on UA-cam. Thanks again the great info and watching. Best Wishes & Blessings. Keith Noneya

@@keithnoneya I understand that; life gets in the way of our toys. You can check the filesystem by right clicking the drive under my computer then properties>>tools if I remember correctly. Beware, this can also make any issues worse (Micro$oft) so the very first thing you should do is clone that drive and make any changes to the clone, not original. Original is now the backup. I saw the temperature warning on your first boot. You might want to clean out dust and replace CPU thermal paste sooner rather than later. This makes a huge difference. Try both PNP settings in BIOS to get PS2 to work. Win2k can be finicky and slow as you noticed so give it a chance to initialize PS2 devices the first time. If you have to reinstall the whole thing from scratch the software and front panel drivers are available but it could take some hunting so try to avoid this measure if possible. P.S. don't try a newer o.s. just to use the TLA 6.x. It will not function 100% and leads to frustration and huge waste of time imo.

@@pcwrangler09 Thanks JP. Yeah I noticed that about the TLA 6.x in the forums, I thought I mentioned that in the video, but I posted that a month ago, so maybe I planned to and didn't. I actually purchased a New W2K package in case I needed to update it. One of the future videos will be a good cleaning. Good idea on the back up, I do that with all my computers in case of a major crash, especially with SSD's. I originally planed 6 videos for the series, but man life is definitely getting in the way of my electronic toys. I have to take a vacation soon and take care of some family business, so I guess my next video's will be to finish up some Murano Repair videos I have half done, then I should be able to do some more electronic toy videos. I do a few different things on the channel, like vehicle repairs, some electronic test equipment stuff, some very light machining and some misc computer repairs. I do the videos to pay for the car parts and share some information my dad taught me about automobile mechanics when I was a teenager in the 70's. The electronics is just for fun at home. My primary work, until I retire soon, is fixing electronic aircraft test sets, love the work and folks I work with, gonna miss it. What do you do for work & hobbies? Thanks for the tips again. You can always contact me on my UA-cam email if you like. keith_noneya@att.net. Best Wishes & Blessings. Keith Noneya
