    Preserve it and use it as a fridge. The barrel tells an interesting story about the history of this place.

    Our windchill is at -17 this mornimg January 14th. Everyone staying indoors. I'm so jealous how beautiful your weather is.
    Replace the barrel with something new and efficient and make a cellar. Or even dig it out, fill it in and make a cellar elsewhere. Its a great spot for an inground fridge, or later on dig out and create a walk in cellar.

    If it's such a steep a steep hike to the cabin site, consider making a storage site about half way up. Unload there and then take it the rest of the way as you need it.

    How about using the barrel hole as a fire pit? Make a Dakota fire hole and run an exhaust pipe out for an occasional fire to warm up if you need it. Or, line the interior of the barrel and store your tools or dry supplies. But pack everything in secondary containers to avoid any exposure to moisture and mice looking for a cozy place to make a nest.

    I'm amazed every time by your capability - and willingness - to set your hand to virtually anything. Well done on a good start for your cabin. You're right when you say that the site is 'cinematic', and that clicked on what it reminds me of: the haunting forest scene in 'Au Revoir Les Enfants'. Fortunately your setting is less dramatic and unsettling.

    It looks from the end footage that you have already removed the old oil drum which on reflection is not a bad idea. The thought of storing things in something that may or may not have been ‘pooped’ in is not nice. Good job though. Love to Bea. 💕 Dorset, UK

    Theo, l think your idea of using the buried drum as a food store is a good one. The animals have already let you know that you are invading their space ,so any food you leave in the cabin will need to be well hidden. Will you have a source of heating in the cabin? It sounds very exciting whatever you do and l’m looking forward to watching your progress. Just a thought… how will you get a big sheet of glass up there for your picture window?

    Hi you two, I love the cabin site Theo. I'm wondering if you have thought of putting another trap door at the top so you can go up on the roof to watch out for fires? If it were me I would build a tower with a cabin at the top so you can capture fire and animal activity from the top. Could you put some animal cams up there too? your viewers might like the view from up there, I know i would. Keep the barrel, let it dry out, line it with heavy plastic and use it for a variety of things. A cash stash perhaps. Love where your channel is going. I'm still grieving your loss of Sweetpea.

    The contents of the barrel, if was used as a long drop, would have long since broken down into harmless compost. It takes two years for human waste to turn into humanure, safe for using in the garden. So would be quite safe now to use the emptied space for storage. But I see Theo has filled it back in.

    I would think if it was for waste or a outhouse it would have drain holes or something bigger than just that, I grew up with a outhouse and to me that is way too small for that. I would reline it with another plastic barrel or liner just because it does look unsanitary , But yeah I could see that as being a cool spot to keep things like food just have to make sure animals could not dig and get in it. A beautiful spot for a cabin or a pergola! maybe a outside fireplace or grill for a picnic in the future! I am curious the mushrooms growing on that bare log that is standing up by the cabin area, are those oyster mushrooms by chance? If so keep that log to grow more, they will naturally come back for a few years ill log decays.

    The barrel as a cold store is sound but drainage may need to be addressed. Hopes in the bottom and then larger stones topped by smaller stones and then a false bottom of wooden slats and then lined! Underfloor fridge is a good thing in summer for your dairy and drinks. What a hard worker though mate! Carting all that stuff up the slope... I'm pegged just watching.

  • @agostinho_9170
    @agostinho_9170 8 місяців тому +5

    Great job and what a view you have there! The barrel might been part of a pine pitch extraction apparatus! This because of the wall, but the usage of that place looks to have been for some forestry industrial endeavour, storing pine resin under ground due to fires, catch pitch or to produce charcoal. The idea of a bathroom here is Portugal is very strange to do that, if people use the forest as their bathroom I can grant you that they will not bury a barrel for it xD Just my opinion! Nice work though!
