My inner motorhead just has to point out the fact that the original clip used the (then brand-new and rather outrageously powerful) BMW S1000 RR. Jamie's bike seems to be the "Racing"-version of the Buell 1125 RR - which was never meant for use on the street and wasn't even officially sold to the public, AFAIK. Guess the Hyneman pulled some strings to get his hands on one of these and to then get it registered for street-use (pretty sure I'm seeing a license plate on the bike). :D Seems kinda odd that it would "only" make 150hp, because that's about the same power the street-legal version puts out, but since Jamie himself gave that power-figure: As impressive as the Buell is, it's significantly less powerful than the BMW. The 2010 S1000 RR produced nearly 200 hp (~193 hp, IIRC). All that said: I don't believe for a second that those extra horses would've made a difference. That original clip was definitely faked.
The video with the motorcycle… It is so obvious that there is a plexiglass or blank sheet of plastic between the table cloth and the set table. You can actually see the glare, even though they have tried to angle the camera so it wouldn't show.
i think adam's explanation of the tablecloth video might be wrong but i can understand where he comes from, he comes from a practical/special effects background so i can understand him viewing it as a practical/special effect, plus the real explanation wouldn't make for entertaining TV :V i think they used visual effects: they filmed a "background plate" of the motorcycle pulling the tablecloth off and the host reacting with nothing on the table and then filmed a shot with everything on the table afterwards, probably using a green screen to make compositing easier, you can see the end of the cloth go up and through the stuff on the table just before it leaves. the stuff shaking on the table could have been achieved by someone shaking the table while they were filming the shot with all the stuff on top, or even just using more editing to animate the stuff on the table. then in the editing bay they simply put the shot of everything on the table on top of the background plate. they probably filmed it with a tripod and then used fake camera shake to make it look more real, the camera only zooms in and out (in a very static way too) and rolls left and right, it doesn't move whatsoever. i think if they did the trick practically they would film it with a handheld camera like every other shot in the video to make it look even more real. the "plastic membrane" some people are seeing might just be the lighting on the table. there's a fantastic video by captain disillusion called "superhuman tape measure skills debunk" which explains a video that uses a similar technique.
I thought the same thing. Actually, the guy on the video takes too much time to start "celebrating" after the cloth leaves the table. It looked suspicious to me
Hey if they were to think it had been CGI and compositing and explained the process of how someone would achieve the effect with that instead then it'd still be entertaining TV, I mean what does Captain Disillusion do? :P
@@atvheads You can also tell that They aren't professional film makers. That close up shot of the plate settings makes it easy to see the plastic. They could have filmed the table without the plastic and without the table cloth and then edited that in just after the cloth is pulled.
Ah, my favorite myth back then. Every weekend I do some scientific experiments with my son and I know what it’s gonna be for tomorrow! I can’t wait to impress him!
Instead of pulling it across the long side of the table, they could've pulled the same cloth from the short side, rigging a number of different length wires and anchor those to the bike. Just for fun.
The myth I always heard wasn't that we only use 10% of our brain, but that we only use 10% at any given time and that the 10% we're using depends on what we're doing at the time.
At 40:42 it seems to me the cause of the tablecloth ripping is not the table edge but actually a knife that tumbles and hits the cloth causing it to start ripping in half.
what if you low friction powdered all of the bottoms of every item on the table as well as the table top or spray some kind of low friction spray on all the item's surfaces touching the table as well as the table top. I think that might have done the trick
watching this episode is kind of painful. I wonder, if some of the testing could have shown a health issue for Grant Imahara and his life would have turned out differently. It is not an academic questions, as there is a huge controversy against "random" MRT/CT scans as it seems they do much more damage then good. Still, i wonder ...
Fact is, we don’t and won’t know what caused the aneurysm. It’s entirely possible flying around the country in a pressurised vessel caused it. All I can suggest is watch the show and see how much Grant enjoyed working on it, rather than speculate it led to his death.
@@kyuofcosmic 100% agreed. I love watching the show for the joy and seeing the team nerd out is the best. I never wanted to suggest that the show led to his death, rather was thinking that a random, different decision could have changed everything.
They needed to be pulling the cloth downwards off the edge, like Adam perfected by hand. The tablecloth jumps up and raises the items, causing them to rip and make more turbulence for the items. If the cloth had a steel beam to be dragged downwards against, the items would remain more or less exactly on the table. REDO!
plus it seems that the table was way smaller while doing the stunt by the length of the tablecloth, and later on the video while presenting the table seems waaay larger, so I believe there is a deceptive there as well ;)
Can you fix the narrator issue in next episodes? Its just few clicks in the edting software. Its better to make it full mono (Left as left, and Left as right) than to have VO on the lef. It hurts ears
the fact about the Brain useage... was that scientist only knew what 10% of the brain was used for... the thing that we only use 10% is a miss quote, that stuck. supercharged Bike? I understand using a fast bike that is readily available... but surely the Yamaha H2, that "IS" supercharged and much faster would be the ultimate test rig... but if a Harley partner bike can do it, then so can My Moped... Or The V-Strom, as that reaches a better top speed!
Moot point here, but fun to think about. The theory we're only using 10% of our brain, should limit humans to a 10% ability of understanding brain functionality/capacity. I prefer to use the adage, "humans only use 10% of their potential" which probably tracks much closer to the origin of the myth.
Adam did this on mythbusters jr. It always have me the jeebies because he folds the cloth before yanking on it. Wouldn't an unfolded cloth gather more speed?, your arms/body would've gathered more acceleration by the time the cloth is actually moving if left unfolded?
Missed opportunity for the wine bottle labels to say "Wyneman"
Ive seen an interview where they discussed this episode, and Jamie didn't like that it sounded like "Whine".
I'm not sure why I'm surprised that that Jamie has a high-powered motorcycle.
I know I was thinking the same thing
Think he had an insane dirt bike too.

exactly
Just use an equalizer to make it mono
Well at least it doesn't have the bloody master chef logo in the top right corner!!?!
Omg xD
I only had the right headphone on and was SO confused until i saw your comment! 😂😂
ah, so it was the video..
34:04 love that little interaction between Grant and Kari.
That cameraman at 41:14 was about to loose an arm or head.
I always wonder what if grant was the one in the brain scanner, maybe they could had find the aneurysm
This episode was like 10 years before his passing. Not sure if a ruptured aneurysm could go unnoticed for an entire decade.

But do we know who they are?!
I know it sounds crazy, but it seems like they put them to the test. But I don't know.

Such a great episode.
14:50 Kudos to Adam for his sewing skills; I have a 1909 Singer sewing machine that is display only.
Why didn’t they call the wine „W(h)ineman?

That BMW S1000RR was a true legend and so was the ad.
Pretty sure that with a little more space on either end they could have had a good table pull. hehehe

That scene with Tori is something out of the world of Dali. The micro....huge bifta placed on him.

It's such a shame they didn't catch the tumor in Grant's brain with those tests.

At 100mph, it's so scary that table cloth gone in an instant 😮

In the video they tried to copy, the tablecloth was absolutely between the table and something else that the dishes were actually sitting on.
10%? A hard worn supervisor would say people use less than that.

2:12 How the heck didnt they see the plastic over the table??
They would have. For the sake of the narrative, the hosts frequently feign ignorance about something they already know the answer to.
I mean with their giant table the wood top was fake plastic so it was likely giving the same amount of friction anyway
