@@GeekZoneMT I am a fan of both of your channels and am running a Mirkwood set campaign in the "Adventures in Middle-Earth" RPG right now. I wish these had been uploaded before I started but I am excited to fold this stuff into my current game and really immerse my players.
This is why I dislike the way Legolas was portrayed in the Hobbit movies so much. He has protected his realm and his people against the darkness for millenia, fighting day after day to keep the memory of Greenwood the Great alive within the Mirkwood it had become - there is no way in hell that he would just betray all of that and run away on a whim. When thinking about The Hobbit book, I always picture him at his father's side, leading the Elven army into battle - not running around aimlessly after some Silvan lady because of some dumb love triangle. Honestly, they didn't do him justice. He's incredibly loyal in the books, even weathering the Sea Longing and staying in Middle Earth for Aragorn's sake ("For the love of the Lord of the White Tree"), and eventually taking Gimli with him to Valinor because he simply couldn't leave him behind. He wouldn't abandon his people in their time of need. He'd probably rather die. And while we are on the topic of Legolas: of course this was never outright said in the books, but I feel like Mirkwood's new name of Eryn Lasgalen is not a coincidence. The name "Legolas" is Sindarin and means "green leaf". "Eryn Lasgalen", as you have mentioned, translates to "The Forest of Green Leaves", which is quite a notable change to the previous "The Great Greenwood". I can only imagine that Thranduil honoured his son's deeds in the Ring War by merging his name with the realm's. Of course, that's just a small theory of mine, but it seems to me like the most likely explanation of the name change.
@Grant Vaughnalso to honour his wife's greatest treasure, as Thrandiul is known treasure his people and his family above anything else. In this regard he immortalised his treasures by naming the realm in honour of them.
Timeturner I think he also left for the sake of Mirkwood. Tauriel suggested that Mirkwood would fall in danger too if they wouldn’t fight the orcs. Just like when she suggested to leave Mirkwood to fight the spiders as they keep coming back to their parts of the woods. Idk just my thoughts
My first Tolkien crush was Bilbo when I was like 10, heh. I had an audio cassette of The Hobbit read my Martin Shaw and listened to it so much that it wore out :D
Could you make a lore video on enchantments? Like how they're made, how durable they are, what their limits are, etc. I think they'd make for a nice topic, seeing as they can range from glowing when orcs are nearby like Glamdring, or granting immense power in whatever way the user requires, like the Ring of Power.
My entire life has been shaped by the stories in these books. From the first time I read LOTR front to back in middle school, to the present day, when I try to read it through once a year or two. Amazing video and of excellent quality! I've always found Mirkwood to be an interesting location, and you've made me even more interested. That is a mark of a good entertainer!
Thanks for the introduction to Ambient Worlds, it's good to see creative minds collaborating together! I like how the concept of enchantment in Lord of the Rings reflects the theory that all living things are linked together. That the magic objects depend on the will of the user to enable them to affect or change this reality, according to their personal power and ability. The simple one's, like enchanted weapons that detect enemy's can be used by anyone. Others like the Rings of power, depend on both the will and Personal power of the user to use them as intended. Corrupted objects corrupt those who use them, powered by the will and nature poured into them by their creators. I'd like to see more on this. Nice to see you back again!
Thanks spooky! Yeah enchantments and magic will certainly make an interesting video, though it will take a while to go through the material and compile some research for it :) However I'll get it done for sure, so thanks for the suggestion :)
thranduil was good addition to the movies, the scene where he takes out many foes on his great elk beasts antlers is simply epic, just my opinion, only ever read the paperback version of lord of the rings when I was 13yo, so I'm no purist, I know he was in the books but think he was unnamed, "the elven king"
Great video and narration Mirkwood has always fascinated me especially when Amon Lanc became Dol Gol Dur which was one of my favorite scenes to see in the Movie Hobbit so cool!
many people have written that Thranduil is bad, I say he is not bad look, Rivendell was safe because it wasn't strategic and lay in the light, Lothlorien was safe thanks to Lady Galadriel's ring and they lived in prosperity, Mirkwood was not safe, it was a very dangerous area, the lands of King Thranduil were huge, he fought every day, there were spiders, orcs, goblins, and poisonous mushrooms, the borders had to be guarded all the time, and Thranduil was wild, his elves were aggressive not like the elves of the master Elrond - they were turned out and polite, and not like the safe elves from Lothlorien - although we know that they were also dangerous Thranduil elves are a huge army, impossible to pass, besides they were more human, they had weaknesses, saws and played, and from the books (additions) you can read that they liked sex (yup, but they had to be in pairs as a relationship) in Rivendell the elves are stiff and distant, Lotorien doesn't comment because I don't know the truth is that Mirkwood forest elves were more affordable let's not forget that the forest was dangerous when Thranduil began to lust after his father's death,it was Greenwood yet but just 500 years, next by 4000 was dark Mirkwood Thranduil its 6500 years old, as Elrond,I dont know how age is Legolas but probably 2500-3000 because Arwen is 2800 and they were in similar age (his mother died at the pass, at the hands of the orcs, but the elves didn't go to battle with the children, so she had to travel because she was with her son, it had to be a robbery, we know that Legolas does not remember her, he had to be a baby, we also know that body of this woman was not found were probably torn apart by the orcs)
This video was amazing! It would be cool to see a video on how the elves interacted with each other, as you hinted to it in this video. For instance I know the Mirkwood elves were not viewed as wise as the elves of Rivendell and Lorien. Were there tensions between the two as a result? Did their peoples ever interact outside of war? I'm looking forward to more videos from you! Nice work!

I dont see how dale could survive being so far from other human realm. Its hard to imagine them having such city without trade to other human. Make more sense if they were more primitive mountain men (kinda like how rohirrim are horsemen who live on the plain), rather than more urbanised people we saw in thr movie.
Pt Bot They traded not with humans mostly, but with the Dwarves and Elves. And as far as I’m concerned those folks have more sums of gold and silver that they’re willing to hand over...
I would like to point out that if wood elves have trouble finding food, to the extent that trade with men becomes essential to their wellbeing, the forest really is sick. Other elven realms like Rivendell and Lorien, don't seem to have this problem.
Lorien is a forest realm as well but the elves there make lembas bread. It is possible that wholesale plants just couldn't be grown in Mirkwood even by the clever Firstborn.
it would take a lot of pain and suffering to starve an Elf, but trading is not unusual- the Hollin Elves traded with Khazad-dum, and Thingol, Thranduil as well as Finrod paid Dwarves to build their cavern systems.
No problem. Pot is now legal in many places, you can go to any of them and imagine yourself to be whatever you like! Or come to think of it, anyone who thinks they want to inhabit an imaginary place perhaps has already discovered the "green leaf".
I love your videos. If there's one thing I enjoy as much as the novels and short stories it's learning about the lore that Tolkien created for this amazing setting. It's obvious that you use a wide range of sources for these lore videos and I just wondered if the old Iron Crown Enterprises "Middle Earth Roleplaying Game" (MERP) was one of them? Of course, I know that they did take some liberties with certain things because they were writing a game and had to fill in some of the blanks, like the blue wizards, for example, but they usually did make a note of the fact that those subjects were mostly conjecture because Tolkien hadn't elaborated on them fully but a lot of the material was gleaned from Tolkien's writings and the writings of Christopher like the 'History of Middle Earth' series. I was just curious. Thanks for all your hard work, this is such a fascinating subject and really a must watch for anyone interested in world building, whether as an aspiring writer or just a Game Master for RPGs. Keep up the great work.
Hey! I love your videos. I'm a huge LotR fan and these lore videos are uplifting. Tolkien's work is simply magnificent, deep, spiritual, and overall very captivating. One thing I've always wondered, why do they mention the Great Sea, like aragorns coronation song "Out of the Great sea to middle earth I have come." Its almost as if they're talking about a distance between life and valinor which I see as Heaven basically
talk about the Grey Mountains region and its surrounding places such as Mount Gundabad, the mountains of Angmar and the Whitered Vale, as that´s a very mysterious and dark region full of hideous and evil creatures, some still very little known which somehow kept the remanent character of the former northern Iron Mountains of Arda as Melkor first settled to hideout Utumno in the farthest northern iced region.
Hey Carl ... I Think your videos are great. As much info as anyone could want about the world of Arda. I have a request ... Please, tell us all as much as you can find out about what exists at the edges of the map of Arda. The Gate of Morning & Door of Night ... The lands far to the south and east of Middle Earth, and the edges of Aman ... What it was like Underneath Arda before Illuvatar changed it to a sphere ... All the hidden places known of, or hinted at. Desriptions of these places would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Keep up the good work!
These videos are really well built, but i just cant get over the fact that most of the soundtrack is the song from when flint marko turned into sandman in spider man 3 😂😂😂. Did my research to make sure and it definitely is.
Also, do you have any videos about Theoden and how Saruman controlled him thru worm tongue? Theodens one of my favorite characters because he went thru this dark depression under the control of saruman, they defends helms deep against 10000 ural hai with very little warriors, then assembles the rohirim to deal a hard blow to saurons forces at minas tilth. Gives me chills and brings a tear to my eye hearing his speech b4 they ride into battle
Haha till now I've heard Karl (correct) and Scar. If you'd like to share what you hear feel free. Maybe I should I stick to something that's hard to mess up in the future, like bob. 😂
I have been binging ur videos recently and they all amazing. Just curious how long does it take to research, write and edit one lore video. Cos they r all so high quality
It depends a lot to be honest. I like to cover a topic in complete detail when possible, so I usually go through all the books looking for the smallest of details. So if the topic is spread across many different books and passages it usually takes ages to research. So I'd say probably a video on average takes 30-40 hours give or take.
In some ways Mirkwood could almost be viewed as the Elven Moria, with the distinct difference that they were never driven out (though they did fall back northward). For a short time it may have even been worse, for instead of a Balrog, they had Sauron himself! Luckily, Sauron had his sights set on Middle Earth as a whole, and was not just focused on destroying the Elven Kingdom. But they were on the list!!
Love your videos... now when Amazon is making a Lord of the Ring TV series... how cool would it be if they began from the beginning when elves came over and so on... I know they probably will not but the tought of it is sooo cool.
Thranduil has inspired this villain for this Untold Story about Robin Hood that I am writing where he and Prince John were childhood friends before they grow up to be sworn Enemies.
The Elves are my fave out of the Lord of The Rings/The Hobbit. I would watch the movies and try to learn the Elvish in the movies. learned quite a bit of it. but i may be a little rusty, haven't done it in a while
that is true. may be i'll try and keep digging, there's gotta be something somewhere. may be on Amazon as well, all the good stuff they've got. Seeing a lot of good ones on Amazon.
There are also internet sites which teach Sindarin and Quenya. You can google them. But make sure it's real Elvish made by Tolkien, and not by some fan.

it would take a lot of pain and suffering to starve an Elf, but trading is not unusual- the Hollin Elves traded with Khazad-dum, and Thingol, Thranduil as well as Finrod paid Dwarves to build their cavern systems.
GZ=A-Z in Lore
I wish to inhabit Mirkwood, but as a forest elf.
haha yeah anything else would be pretty horrible ;)
No problem. Pot is now legal in many places, you can go to any of them and imagine yourself to be whatever you like! Or come to think of it, anyone who thinks they want to inhabit an imaginary place perhaps has already discovered the "green leaf".
Leib33 green leaf=Legolas, prince in that realm.
I wish to inhabit it with all the dark beings, would be more exiting
My favorite Lore channel! I couldn't click play quick enough 🧙🕸️🗡️🗝️💚🖤 #teamgeekzone
You always have great videos!
Great channel-now the movies make more sense.
I'm recovering from a bad flu, this shall shatter the lasts veils of sickness ! thank you melon beautiful as always :)
No problem Tulkas, I hope you feel better my friend!
+GeekZone Thank you !
I LOOOOVE these vids!!! you should be the Director of all future films/games about the Lotr Universe!!
I just found your channel. Your videos are excellent. Thanks! :)
A really good vid, as usual
Could you do a lore video on wargs
Will do, it's on my list for future topics :)
I think it's cool you are using some of the art of the Lord of the rings living card game. It's one of my favorite games
Thanks man, they have some beautiful works, really liked the art they created for it!
What an awesome video I really like this kind of content and I think it would be cool if you made a video about the history of Rohan
Thanks Felix, yeah I'll cover Rohan in the future for sure :)
great vid again!
Keep it up! I *LOVE* the LOTR lore!!!!!!
Which video game are you gathering all this content from?
These videos are really well built, but i just cant get over the fact that most of the soundtrack is the song from when flint marko turned into sandman in spider man 3 😂😂😂. Did my research to make sure and it definitely is.
Y'all doing a great job more more
Awesome video.
I love your channel
Cheers buddy ;)
Hey Karl! Welcome back!
Happy New Year!
Thanks man! Though I've released quite a couple of videos since then, perhaps you didn't get the notifications ;)
Hi could you please make a video specifically about what happened to Sauron after the ring got destroyed. Thank You!
Love your vids dawg!! Go pats!!
Thanks Billy!
@@GeekZoneMT no thank you for all your hard work and free content, it really makes me happy because you like doing it. :) ✌
I have watched everyone one of your LOTR videos, it's 2019, and I still can't distinguish what your name is haha
Haha till now I've heard Karl (correct) and Scar. If you'd like to share what you hear feel free. Maybe I should I stick to something that's hard to mess up in the future, like bob. 😂
Maybe I knew it all along, I was also hearing Karl or Scar 😂
Ahh yeah makes sense :P hopefully sounds more of a 'Karl' and less of a 'Scar' though 😂
What would we do without lotro, a fantastic method to walk through Tolkien’s fantastic world
Thank you so much for this excellent, very informative post. I tend to have a kindly bias toward Thranduil's folk.
@@GeekZoneMT wow
@@GeekZoneMT thanks for putting all that hard work for learning and entertainment
Curious to know if you've made a video about the lore of Fangorn Forest yet? Oh never mind I found it
Not yet, I will though :)
Great video! What video game do you always show, is it on any consoles?
In some ways Mirkwood could almost be viewed as the Elven Moria, with the distinct difference that they were never driven out (though they did fall back northward). For a short time it may have even been worse, for instead of a Balrog, they had Sauron himself! Luckily, Sauron had his sights set on Middle Earth as a whole, and was not just focused on destroying the Elven Kingdom. But they were on the list!!
Interesting !
Can you make a lore of stone giants from hobbit
I'd like to see it too
o yes please
Yeah I'd like to, but there's very little information available on them, so it would probably include the history of their literacy creation.
@@GeekZoneMT anything would be good enough
@@GeekZoneMT Anyrh8ng about the ents?
I really like to thank you for the video
No probs man, thanks for being a part of this community :)
Love your videos... now when Amazon is making a Lord of the Ring TV series... how cool would it be if they began from the beginning when elves came over and so on... I know they probably will not but the tought of it is sooo cool.
i remember playing the game😯 wish i can play again😊
please make a video about what the future of Middle-earth might look like. Will the magic go away? Will humanity develop modern Technology?
Thranduil has inspired this villain for this Untold Story about Robin Hood that I am writing where he and Prince John were childhood friends before they grow up to be sworn Enemies.
The Elves are my fave out of the Lord of The Rings/The Hobbit. I would watch the movies and try to learn the Elvish in the movies. learned quite a bit of it. but i may be a little rusty, haven't done it in a while
I'm sure there are some youtube channels that teach one of the Elvish languages :) It would be a great place to polish up again
do you know of any? def would be a great place to learn and polish up on Elvish. i have looked, but fell short on finding any.
Oh true, most of them have only a few uploads or have stopped their series. There don't seem to many podcasts that cover it either :(
that is true. may be i'll try and keep digging, there's gotta be something somewhere. may be on Amazon as well, all the good stuff they've got. Seeing a lot of good ones on Amazon.
There are also internet sites which teach Sindarin and Quenya. You can google them. But make sure it's real Elvish made by Tolkien, and not by some fan.
Could you make a video about the wargs or Beorn?
Yeah I will, I've actually been compiling my research for a video on Beornings :)
@@GeekZoneMT oh yay!
Gandalf: "These are Gundabad Wargs, they will outrun you!"
Radagast: "These are Rhosgobel Rabbits... I'd like to see them try."

Love your videos. Are those game videos you post from LOTR online or something else?
Cheers Dave! Yeah they're mostly from Lord of the Rings Online

From one Maltese to another; "ghallimtni aktar mill-kotba habib. Ghandek talent u napprezza dak kollu li taghmel, Grazzi mill-qalb".
Ta xejn habib! ;)
Ok. This is the first time I've 'seen' Maltese and I'm obsessed. Seems like a mix of latin languages with a smattering of arabic.
