Here's an update to our algae problem! ua-cam.com/users/shortsu4u866ZKsmg?feature=share
I also had a tech-heavy nano tank a few years ago, got it from a guy moving away for only 200$! I had two clowns and a dark blue damselfish. The corals were already quite large as the previous owner had the tank for a few years already, my favorite was the massive neon green leather coral that the clowns used as a home! There was also two Kenya trees (underrated coral imo), cabbage leather coral, a LOT of zoanthids, a big bubble tip anemone, a small trumpet and plate coral (bought them on my own). I really miss the tank, as everything died during a huge freeze that happened here in Texas, and my dad made me sell it.
I have a Fluval 13.5 in my bedroom that is all stock except an mp10 and the filter basket from in tank. That is growing quickly. a little over a year old. It’s actually my go to for when corals don’t do great in my big tank at times. I just recommend to feed frozen and feed less. If you do you won’t have the issues your having.
Thx for the advice! We're mostly pellet now but will try doing more frozen instead! And glad your Evo is doing well!
Im thinking maybe too much fish for that little tank. Maybe going bigger tank or rid of some fish might help with the nutriets in the water. Corals love it but so does algae
Yeah we finally cracked it with fluconozole and the refugium is running really well keeping phosphates at 0.09 consistently
Tank looks good man keep it up.
Can i ask do you need all this stuff for a saltwater aquarium seems a little over the top for a small aquarium ? can you use a protien skimmer on a freshwater aquarium ?
You definitely do not need so much stuff for a nano tank. It's just that we love gadgets and gear so wanted to try as much as possible. I don't think protein skimmers work on a freshwater tank. We have a fluvial canister filter on our freshwater 29 gallon tank and love it
@@PlanetHorgen Oh can i ask which Fluval canister you have i was actually looking into them. Is there any noise you notice from the filter. Thanks for the reply.
the Fluval 207 in our 29 gallon is very quiet, almost impossible to hear.
I think you would want around this amount of filtration if you want to have a similar high bioload in a 13.5
@@monkey814 Oh ok so because there is so many fish in such a small tank they need all this filtration ?
I had that tank. And my clownfish had babies. Love that tank. Small.
You have any hermits they will take care of hair algea and turbos
Just added a hermit and emerald. Had a lot more on the past but they didn't eat much briopsis
It's an expensive hobby brother, you don't realize until you get into it keep going your doing good
I have a similar story started a tank like 4 year ago WB20 cube everything was trial by fire to much sand i had an in between sand bed and to much rock in the display i took rocks out and re arranged did a long cycle probably 6 months of ghost feeding then i got a couple clown fish i learned the very next day i would need a lid added clean up crew the i over stocked and some starved then i get corals they do pretty good then i got it in my head that i needed to lower my phosphate from .9 to. 05 so i add gfo then i had 0 and 0 on nitrates and phosphates dinos came shortly after that so i added a skimmer and started dosing Dr Tims did the black out didn't notice much different until i got a UV light that seemed to help a lot with dino but i had already lost a coral or 2 after a short lived dino victory i had gha attack i picked it off and cut back on feeding Dr Tims and emerald crab seemed to knock the gha back but then...... Cyano strikes did the gha and cyano shuffle they just traded places back and forth for a while more corals die i started to get frustrated then my emerald crab dies my fancy tech didn't really help a tank this small so then I'm down to 1 clown a couple snails and hermits i lost a fire fish and a goby during all this so now I'm feeling defeated no matter what it seemed i couldn't win then my temp controller malfunctioned i didn't know how cold the tank was getting then my clown and snails die probably starved cuz i was trying to cut the feeding back and didn't religiously do water changes so i just gave up for like 6 months complete neglect my wife made rodi water and added to the ato to keep it"stable" in the end i have spent 6-700 on live stock and i have a hermit a couple zombie snails and my trooper of a toadstool leather i decide to get my shit together and clean it up really good and added a auto water changer now I'm waiting for the tank to stabilize and cycle as I'm feeding again long story short less fish more water change more manual removal oh and you gotta change the filter media in your rodi dummy that would help
That is A LOT of fish for a 13.5
Try manual removal of the larger hair algae then add a bunch of hermits of different sizes...
So turns out it's bryopsis but we are using fluconozole let us know if you want a video about that
Yeah my hermits loved hair algae! Also my emerald crabs did too! So much so that the only hair/bubble algae left was on the shells of the emerald and hermit crabs lmao
Beautiful tank
Thank you!
How long have you had tanks? There is so much to learn. It seems like there is a high chance of failure. I haven't had a tank since I was a kid. I had regular and black lace angel fish, and my sister had a tank with guppies. I struggled with algae covering the glass, first green, then brown. In the end, all the fish died and my dad wouldn't let us try again.
we've had this tank for almost a year now. Algae is a real problem, we have tried to use sea urchins, algae eating fish, and chemicals but they still prevail.
You should try running some chemipure elite. It helped a lot in my algae problem. And a good CUC
we have tried to use chemipure elite, but we are trying to go chemical free, and just have the refugium, protein skimmer, mechanical and bio filters, and uv sterilizer. we don't use chemipure elite because we have to replace it and we don't want to strip out the good stuff.
@@PlanetHorgen I’ve never heard of chemi pulling out any of the “good stuff” but it did help lower my phosphate which in return helped with algae. So if your going chemical free your not dosing anything in the tank? I had pretty good success with my 10 gallon before moving to a 40 breeder. Stay ontop of it these small tanks can be a PITA quick. 👍
Isnt this bryopsis? Love your coral collection, super nice 👍
Yes you're right we're now trying fluconozole
i think i toss over 6000 in my 25 gal waterbox penisula. most cost are on corals, i tried to spend less on equipments.
i have a 13.5 evo had greenhear elgy problim now it gone i use a 4 to one mix ov rodi watter and calceim i gut at the drugstor it works butt your watter looks like you put a cup ov melk in it for about a hr it cleensup my tank fast
Will consider that next time! Was there any impact to your corals doing that?
Always go big with sump you could have squeezed a bigger better tank in that space takes over 2 years to mature a tank 0.4 is not high
Agree this was my first foray into saltwater so wanted to start small but wish I had gone bigger.
So many gadgets and you seem like you’ve learned a lot but why so many fish brother?
I think it was partly to see if the various filtration methods and refugium could keep up and so far it has we're now averaging 0.09 phosphates and 0.6 nitrates. Also I like the fish variety and they seem happy as far as I can tell
You have 6 fish in a 13 gallon system
My lights are half the cost of your whole setup. My apex setup on my evo alone is more expensive. Not even close to my livestock cost either
Just curious why not just go with atleast a 30gallon make life much easier.
It was our first saltwater tank and we have two freshwater aquariums so wanted to go small but in hindsight we'd go bigger for more chemistry stability
I once had a free anemone eat a 200$ clown fish 😂😂😂😂
Awesome tank imo
ps your refugeum will cuss more problims then it wurth
Definitely not the most expensive evo on youtube lol or in general.. Mine has a neptune hooked up to it under radions 😅 try phosgaurd for the gha and get you some clean up crew.
Tips to you as well is gha will ALWAYS out compete chaeto in a fuge.. the refugiums purpose is to out compete other algae but they work better on stable mature tanks your still in the early phases even in a 10mo tank
Too many fish in there, most likely describes the algae issue
We're getting it under control let us know if you want a tank update!
your tank is to small if you want to sell anything let me know
if you want to sell me any of your corals ill buy them all
were good for now, thanks for the offer though
wayyyy to many fish for that size tank my friend theres your issue
To many fish in that small tank. It's far too small for 5 fish. Your bio load is too much. No wonder you have hair algae.
As an update we treated with fluconazole and all the algae (turned out to be briopsis) is gone and phosphates are stable at 0.1. 5 Gal Refugium definitely soaks up a lot of bioload so far.
Omg, what a mess and significant overkill in equipment for a cheap small tank. And with all the equipment, you still have hair algae all over the place. For all the money you spent, you could have bought a larger tank and stand that would hide all the ugliness and mess and the tank would have matured through the ugly stage.
Good news we got rid of the algae!
tooo many fishhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh thats why there is algaue and automatic feeder
you don't understand the complex mechanisms regarding the algae growth
Waaayyyy over stocked and a very sub-par tank for trying to do a lot. Get at minimum 25g for all those fish. Youll be happier.
It's looking better now! We need to do a tank update
Damn tank isn’t thriving at all
Seriously 😐
