- Squier brings you the return of a long-vanished Fender classic in the deeply satisfying form of 2013's Vintage Modified Bass VI six-string bass. The original 1961-1975 model has provided distinctively voiced low end for everyone from the Beatles to the Black Keys, Cream to the Cure, and many others.
Here, studio session ace Mel Brown takes the Vintage Modified Bass VI for spin with a grooving R&B exercise incorporating harmonics, chords and a pick-style line that ably demonstrates the instrument's distinctively authentic vintage-style look and tone.

Squier Vintage Modified Bass VI Demo | Fender
/ fender
Finally - a BASS player demo'ing this thing!
Thanx Brock :-)
My pleasure.
Nope, Glenn Fricker is clearly doing that job.
shouldn't be a guitar player? since this thing is made for them?
@@AaronKaiMCDNLD Lol this was not made for guitar player.
People complaining this is not a bass, with the rotosound string set and all three pickups on this thing has enough low end to flatten a house.
It's great for playing Motorhead on!
And I love being able to play fast stuff and guitar fills on it. It makes me sound like John Entwistle.
i want to slap like in this comment, but it have 69 likes
had my first practice yesterday with my bassvi, mine has humbuckers though. Also i mainly use it as a baritone with an 68 for my low e and it still had plenty lowend when played through the amp.
This is awesome that Fender would include this gem in the Squier lineup. They should definitely add the electric 12 string next!
We got it!!!!!!!!!! The squier jazzmaster XII
10 years later, they did it!
finally someone who can play it!
Baritone range is either A-A or B-B. This is E-E so it is strictly a bass. Baritone range can be achieved with a capo. That being said, you could string it up as a baritone, but as it's designed, it is a bass.
It’s a Bass VI, lol not a bass
@Zachary Le Sauvage no
@Zachary Le Sauvage no
@Zachary Le Sauvage I play bass and guitar. I have 2 standard scale guitars, a 29.75 inch scale guitar, a 30 inch scale guitar, and a 34 inch scale long bass. Thanks.
@Zachary Le Sauvage That’s not what you said. You said you’re going to assume that I know nothing about bass, but I do, in fact. Thanks.
Damn! Mel, you know how to play so smoothly. I have huge respect for you. 😊
So mesmerized by your playing here, Mel Brown. Had to learn it myself on the VI I just built! Thanks for sharing this with us.
Thanx Hakeem! I appreciate that & thanks for stopping by :-)
Not just a sixer. It's a guitar style neck, but 30" scale. Not a 2x4 with strings. It's a gateway drug for rhythm guitarists who are interested in heavier tones, but don't want to learn something brand new. It's a rouged temptress, calling out to impressionable young musicians.
you were definitely drunk, 9 years ago!
i was very impressed by the squire bass vi, it really sounds like the original id say it is the best squire ever done
I was smart enough to buy one when they came out and it has greatly appreciated in value around 200%
Awesome bass. It deserves LaBella flats.
I love guitars.. i hate guitar reviews cause every reviewer needs to play some boring blues or country or rock… THIS IS MY FAVOURITE GUITAR REVIEW EVER!!..
I think the real reason why you love this review is that it's a bass review rather than a guitar review. Sort of.
I want to know how this would sound if plugged into and Ampeg SVT Classic
Girls at gigs might think this is a guitar, bass players everwhere might get laid!
OUCH!
to borrow an old trope, "ok boomer".
I have a PS VI and I love the way it looks. It was not meant to be a reissue or a "correct" bass vi, it's something totally different. I really dig mine, well made, sounds awesome. That being said, I will definitely be getting one of these Squier VI's!
ive wanted one for soo long, this is totally gonna be mine
update?
Hi, I don't know much about guitars, but on this video (and a couple of videos I've seen with this guitar), the first / lowest sounding string sounds "fuzzy" and less clear than the others, like it's clashing with the pickups or something (whereas on a 4 string bass it would be a lot clearer tone)?
Is that how the guitar is supposed to sound? Or do you think the string is too close to the pickups (or something else) and how would you recommend getting a clearer sound from this string?
Many thanks, LSDA
When properly intonation is hit at the low E string the screw is getting too close to the string, making it unplayable. A fix and a replacement solution is provided under ;)
www.instructables.com/id/Fender-Squier-Bass-VI-Fixing-tone-tuning-and-inton/
or better get this replacement bridge: secureshop.co.uk/epages/950002362.sf/sec6cccf497ef/?ObjectPath=/Shops/950002362/Categories/Page__Category3
Some stores will carry them. Unfortunately, if you prefer to bring your business to a local guitar shop, you will be receiving yours last. They were originally supposed to arrive mid-October, but now it looks like delays well into December/January or later, since we all know the big box chains will most likely get theirs first.
yes. its done a lot. must get strings which are long enough though, as its 30" plus a long section til the tremolo. la bella or circle k strings have some longer strings available.
John lennon and George harrison shared one of these and used It fore bass lines like hey jude, back in the USSR, Helter skelter while paul was playing piano
I just ordered one, in sunburst!
Mel Brown has crazy pocket!
Hi! Is it available in a left-handed version? I can't find it anywhere...
Super cool sounding, It looks just like my B&W Bullet Strat lol. Lost brothers.
Hola. Quiero comprar este instrumento pero no encuentro la opción para adquirirlo en su página web. Soy de México.
Love it, just what I'm looking for 😎
How long till guitar center gets a hold of these? they usually sell them cheap than the fender website
The word on the street is you can order them specifically, but they're going to be in stores fall 2013.
oh yeah 6 string bass is back
Got tired of waiting, and waiting and waiting. Found a great deal online through the GC and got me a used/mint Japanese Classic Series Fender VI, Vintage White with tort, a couple weeks back. No B&B but still quite a looker, and the tone, oh my!!. Heavier gauge strings were necessary.
Congrats - that's the one to have.
It's a matter of taste, but I think they sound a whole lot better with Flatwounds.
dimiaraujo90 Absolutely.
Hmmm...unfortunately for us lefties I doubt Fender will produce in LH. Maybe Fender Japan will put out a reissue model one of these days? As a bassist learning guitar, I would love one of these.
What's the amp he's playing on?
I need this.
Sort of! The Bass VI is somewhere between baritone guitar and short-scale six-string bass. It comes down to who's playing it!
what amp should it play through?
Its a guitar-bass hybrid can't you tell?
Yes you can.
What kind of strings can the nut hold? Can I put a heavy B-string on the bottom without replacing it?
Nope. It's designed for bass VI strings, which, despite being in normal bass tonal range are a lighter gauge, with the low E being 90-95. So even a heavy E at 105 would be problematic, let alone a low B at 120-130. Add to that the guitar like string spacing (vs. wider bass string spacing) and you'd be overcrowding the nut.
mark schlipper wise instruction
Those are sick
I've got one of these it need some modifications like replace the tailpiece with a hardtail and did away with the bridge single coil pickup for high output humbucker and put on 150 set of string so I'm at a standard lower tuning
Theres a version with humbuckers by subzero. Its about $300 i believe
But where would you get the strings for it?
These are listed on a couple of online retailer sites for $349!
I'm gonna buy one of this. which hard case does it fit in?
Is it just supposed to be called vintage modified, cause I don't see a big difference, is there a mustang bridge er something on it?
***** the lofreq cut is already stock
Hi, what string set comes in this Squier VI? if anyone knows the gauge, of each string and replacement suggestions. Thank you
@Fabián Córdoba Dupetit according to the Fender website they're
Fender® Nickel Plated Steel (.024-.084, Gauges)
D'addario exl156 are for the Fender/Squier Bass VI.
24-84 gauge.
i agree with galaxies4ever here - this demo shows one riff, shown on one pickup setting. Hardly a demo.
Does anyone know what kinda strings this thing would require? 6 string bass strings? Orrrrr?
this is barritone guitar ?
Not quite, they're going to be a little thinner and a little shorter. Some makers have specific Bass VI gauge strings. D'Addario's are 024, 034, 044, 056, 072, 084, for example.
AT LEAAAAAST !!
whoa...100% like guitar
Wes Montgomery recorded his version of, "Tune Up" on a bass
looks better than the bass vi pawn shop
could you string it with a normal guitar gauge and just play it normally or not?
I don't know for sure since I haven't played one myself but the string holes on the nut are probably too big for guitar strings
Sawyer McElroy-Parvis fair enough thanks
In stores now, well, online retailers.
Try shoegaze, try deep, ominous chords, try a drone-metal thing. Why keep playing the same bass riff over and over?
I baught one not long ago and can say without a doubt you have the right idea this thing is a doom drone beast
It's a good idea, but I kinda just want to listen to what it can do by itself.
You can probably guess what it can do when you put some distortion on.
Just a question..
Are the EADG on this guitar the same as the EADG on a regular 4 -String?? They look a little thinner..
Also does anyone know what song he is playing I wanna know the tab for it.
Hi just read on fenders website that this is infact a bass guitar, its tuning is EADGBE, just an octave lower than a guitar and is is no way a baritone guitar.
Thanks anyways :)
***** Standard bass guitar tuning is E0A0D1G1
***** a standard bass guitar is tuned an octave below a 6 string guitar tuned in e standard. If this was tuned an octave higher than a standard 4 string, it would just be a guitar with a very long scale.
I meant E1A1D2G2, a standard guitar is tuned E2A2D3G3B3E4
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stringed_instrument_tunings#G
***** you're mistaken. First, standard bass guitar tuning is E1A1D2G2. Second, the lowest E on a guitar corresponds to the 7th fret of the A string on a bass guitar; there's only one (not two) octave difference between a guitar and a bass. Third, a "baritone guitar" (AKA not the one in this video) is tuned BEADF#B - of course, that's why it's called a baritone: its register falls between that of a guitar and a bass. Fourth, the Bass VI is tuned in the same octave as a standard bass guitar, as you can read in the following link: www.fender.com/news/the-bass-vi-bass-or-baritone-guitar/
Could you make these left handed?
I really want to know how does this sound with guitar strings on it
Like a guitar with a big scale
So it's bass or guitar?
Bass guitar
Does it djent?
Great playing on all your demos! I forget to listen to the tone ;-)
Thanks Kelly!
ya dude, that was sublime.
I appreciate that very much Lyle - Thanks!
Always loved the idea of this instrument especially when space is tight and workign with a looper. If you ran in through an octave-up pedal, could you play it like a normal guitar?
I guess you could but you might as well just play a regular guitar, it would probably sound better and you wouldn't get any weird tracking issues like you get (to an extent) with most octave pedals.
The bass/guitar player of royal blood does a similar thing with a regular 4 string but you'd need a huge array of pedals to make that work like he does. At that point I'd recommend just playing a guitar if you planned to do that with a bass VI and go the other way round, pitch down the bass notes, like jack white does for instance.
This would be a great instrument for guitar players who want to play bass parts for songs without using a typical bass with bigger strings.
Could I tune it Ab-Db-Ab-Db-Gb-Bb?
I watched this video 12 times
I'll take 20!
Watch Aurora in concert. They use one of these.
why not show the tremolo piece?
What kind of string would need for that? can anyone help?
M Valdemar its regular gauge bass strings for low e, a, d, g don't know what fits for the b, and high e
Tuning and Strings?
Fender® Nickel Plated Steel (.024-.084, Gauges) E,A,D,G,B,E
Hey, fendermusical
Can you send me the Tabulatures of this ?
Please, I bought this bass yesterday and want to play your song^^
Fender says they should be available in a few weeks. They list for $549...I am paying $329 for mine through Alto Music.
Looks like it has the original low frequency cut switch, nice!
The original had no such switch. Only 3 switches for the pickups, the 4th switch was added later.
Hermoso!!!
I ordered one at my local music store and fender is so swamped with orders that I won't get it till December.
I want one. Same i can't afford one!
FINALLY!!!!!! :D
i wanna hear some blues on one of these guys... im getting an idea o fingerstyle blues on this bass... anyone know?
What's the street value on this thing?
This Bass is tuned like the Mexican Bajo Sexto
I think they require their own special gauge strings.
Anyone know what song this bassline is from?
Hi bernard. It's actually not a song. When I record these videos for Fender I create something completely in the fly - something inspired by how the instrument sounds to me. This was my first time ever seeing a bass like this, let alone playing one. I don't usually play with a pick either so this was a true first in every way. Thanx for listening :-)
+Mel Brown that bassline sound familiar
Its an awesome bassline, thx Mel!
You're welcome Bernard :-)
Bass or Guitar
1:12 à la chika yeye à la chika yeye
about 350
Hm. Okay. Thanks!
Looks like an interesting instrument, I would have preferred if you demo'd it, rather than a random unnamed drum kit, I can hardly pull it out of parts of the mix but then I'm not on studio monitors.
use your ears. you can hear its tone easily in a mix with no other pitched instruments.....
If you sell both your balls, I think you can get a 1963 Bass VI ;)
It probably sucks. Things like that generally do on cheap fenders/squiers.
yeeees
Is this what Glen Campbell played on "Wichita Lineman"?
I'd love to! Do you have any cash to get me one? I'll even make a video about it, dedicated to you dear sir
I'm strangely drawn to this thing...
Gnarly
$329-349.
This is the best comment I have ever seen...
So. . . basically get some thicker strings on your Jazzmaster and you've got this bass haha
That is Not a 6 Course Bass, it is a Sub-Octave Guitar of 6 Courses, Standard Tuning for 6 Course Bass is this: F#BEADG
Beatles.
6弦のベースギターなのでせうか???
It’s a guitar
