*I like the old style Echo Dot because it's small also **Newest.Technology**, gives out decent sound and doesn't take up a lot of shelf space if you want to put it on beam in the workshop or shed.*
Another thing you need to add. Aqara fp2 sensor is releasing soon. I'm lucky to be part of the program. And so i have my hands one of them. And the fp2 sensor is a game changer !
I’d buy multiple Aqara Occupancy Sensors today if they were available in the US. At this point, I’m so happy with Aqara products I’d probably buy anything they’d release here!
I’d definitely be interested. I don’t understand why, as far as I am aware, the only actual occupancy sensor in the HomeKit world is Lutron Caseta which needs HomeBridge to be exposed to HomeKit. I’m fiddling right now an Onvis motion sensor, for the third time. And it’s for the ac in the wife’s craft room so you know I’m getting daily grief about inconsistencies in the automations I’m trying to trigger with motion (occupancy).
It’ll probably show up in the end. But the downside is that it is much more expensive, it needs a power outlet, and it doesn’t necessary solve as many problems as you’d like. In a living room, it’d be perfect, but unfortunately it doesn’t detect through glass, so if you use it at a bathroom it won’t detect you while showering.
I love Aqara. Living in China, they're absolutely the dominant brand over here. So as you might have guessed, it doesn't personally bug me that the occupancy sensor isn't available outside China, but I certainly want to see Aqara increase its availability around the world.
I have found that a great way to not piss off my wife is by not having automations turn things off. It's easy to figure out when to turn a light on, but it's not always easy to figure out when to turn them off. I have a couple motion sensors that turn things on, but I either rely on someone to manually turn them off when they're done, or I turn off whatever got left on when we leave the house.
Two very beneficial Motion sensor I have implemented. Put one in the garage and when it detects motion between sunset and sunrise it’ll turn on certain lights. Removing us from walking into a dark house at night. Also implemented one that integrates with the ring doorbell. When it detects motion between sunset and sunrise it turns on the porch light.
What’s even the point of adding homekit support for motion sensor, but not adding it for light sensor? It’s like I pay additional buck for a feature which i can’t use. 🤷♂️
I got four Aqara motions sensors at home. Sometimes they are not reliable. They do detect movements but lights controlled through Homekit automation do NOT turn on. No idea what is happening. It is just very frustrating as I have to set up another automation in Homekit as the previous one stopped working.
If the sensor is detecting motion, it is not the sensor that is unreliable. Something else is going on. Perhaps your HomeKit automations are not running correctly (try restarting your homekit hubs). Alternatively, could the lights that it is controlling be unresponsive?
@@ShaneCreates Many thanks, Shane. Yes, the lights are responsive and when tested in the automation, they work properly. It might be the Homekit automation set up that is not working as expected especially when I choose a specific period of time for it to run.
ive got 2 FP1s, working with home assistant, in the states. Aliexpress has them from time to time, just gotta get lucky. Prices are coming down, so ill probably try to pick up a couple more. Positioning is important, i had one that wasnt working well, but i moved it to a different room and it works awesome now. Still slow to respond, so not good triggers for lights turning on, but paired with a motion sensor, they have been working really well.
I have one of the original motion sensors in my laundry room very similar to you. This new one looks like it will fix the same issues you had in the closet with timing out. Thanks for all the great videos!!
I had to laugh at the “spouse test” comment as my husband and I are constantly at odds over my smart home changes and his traditional “what as wrong with the wall switch!” argument! Anything that can work seamlessly so that they don’t even notice is a WIN!
I finally took the plunge and put this in my guest bathroom with the timeout on 1 sec. But it still turns the lights out even if you’re moving about. Pops right back on but man is it aggravating. Guess on to the occupancy sensor 😅
The original Aqara motion sensors have been my go-to motion sensor as well. They work really well and even under Zigbee 1.2, they are incredibly quick- perceptively as fast as my Eve Thread door sensors. That said, I can’t see investing in new sensors when we are on the precipice of Matter’s launch. There’s a key reason: I don’t need one right now. If I did, I’d get this one. However, I am holding off on any new SmartHome projects until Matter’s launch, seeing what products come out immediately thereafter.
The original motion sensor does too seem to have configurable timeout. I just ordered two of both the old and new one, integrated them in Home Assistant via zigbee2mqtt, and although the original does not expose it as an entity, in zigbee2mqtt "Settings(specific)" page for the device, there's an "occupancy_timeout" value that can be changed, and which works as expected. Maybe it won't detect motion again until after 60 seconds though, I haven't tested that.
An occupancy sensor would make things simpler. I really like the Aqara products as well, even though they require a hub. I put an Aqara sensor in the mailbox way at the end of my driveway and an Aqara Hub E1 just inside the garage door. Works like a charm to notify me when I have mail or when the mailbox is not closed all the way.
I can’t find the P1 anywhere. Home Depot told me it’s been discontinued and no trace of this in Amazon. I love been trying to reach Aqara and have gotten response.
The light sensor is vital for my home setup as I have some scenes based on Lux threshold to turn on/off lights when I’m home. So the Philips Hue sensor is still the best choice.
The original Aqara Motion Sensor has a lux sensor built in. Only major difference compared to the Philips one is the cooldown period (which is 60 seconds) with the Aqara original one.
Shane, I had to change the batteries in the P1 Aqara Motion Sensor and now I cannot get it to connect back to HomeKit. I disconnected it from Aqara and added it back but it is not showing up in Homekit. I still have other P1 in Homekit and they still work fine. Why can I not get the P1 to show back up in Homekit with it re-connected to Aqara along with all other Motion Sensors?
Great sensor, have 2 of them already but have to admit one thing: the stand is designed upside down. If you place a thicker part on a ceiling, movement of the sensor is limited by the cutout. If you need a flexibility in adjustment, you need to stick the sensor to the stand being upside-down...
This is the exact reason why I came to this video. I'm looking for something that responds quickly as I'm usually already through the room before the ecobee senses motion.
Hey Shane, thanks for the video! near the end of this video how did you get the closet lights to dim on, or fade in, when you walked in as opposed to turning on instantly like what normally happens when you turn a light switch on? Thanks in advance!
Thank you. That is because the lights in that closet are Phillips Hue bulbs, and that's how they turn on/off. If it was a smart light switch instead, they would have turned on instantly instead.

Good Video! My thoughts are: On a green floor, should I buy a Zigbee Hub or still wait for the Thread Motions Senosors. Today I am using lots of Thread devices but no Zigbee devices. What are your Opinions? Is Zigbee faster than Thread?
You should add the G3 camera from Aqara so many great automations you can have . It recognizes pets, people and can trigger new automations. Aqara is coming out with led strips. Which I'll put under my counter and use a water sensor and diy with a pressure sensor so when i stand on the area rug in the kitchen turns on light strip. And also i would use more hue lights you can do more automations as well in Alexa :)
What I really really want to see from Aqara is a Physical keypad, (not a door lock etc) so I can enter an actual security code for the alarrm system. I use the G2H and E1 as hubs.
Shane. Another great video and I’m looking out for this P1 to be available on Amazon UK. Question for you. How did you automate your closest light? Obviously the P1 but did you install a AQARA Rocker light switch that it turns on or do you have a smart bulb? Thanks
For the closet why don’t you use a window door sensor, that’s what I do and never had an issue, is great because when I am in the closet I keep the door open, do what I need to do and the lights are on. Once I live I close the door and the lights shut off. No timers no nothing just on and off depending on the door. I feel like this is the best system for closets, maybe you routine is different though idk 😁
Yes that’s what I do for other closets, and I agree, works great. But we almost never close the master closet door all the way so that wouldn’t work for this one.
There are a bunch that I like and recommend for different reasons. Some that I use: Eve Cam, Circle View Cam, Aqara G2H Pro and G3, Eufy Cams (for outdoors if you need wireless). I'd suggest looking at the features of them and decide which is best for you. I've done videos on all of the ones mentioned.
A battery-powered sensor with a battery life of up to 5 years is very attractive, especially with all the options to configure it. I'll wait for the thread-based sensor, although I suspect that might come with shorter battery life. One question I have is: what's the temperature range that this can work in? I'd like to put this in a stairwell that goes between the two floors of my house. It's an enclosed area so there wouldn't be any rain or wind, but it isn't heated so the temperature could go as low as 10ºF in the winter, and might get up to 100ºF in the summer.
Thanks for watching! No, unfortunately there is no way to prevent pets from triggering the motion sensor aside from placing it strategically where pets would not roam.
I think I have the ORIGINAL motion & noice sensor - a Maltese. They were bred in Italy to be alert dogs for anyone trying to enter the King/Queens chambers, and 400 years later they are still barking at every noise within a block of the house and any movement past any window or door, day or night.
For some reason I cannot find this P1 model on AliExpress, not even in the XIAO MI store. I only see it on Amazon and elsewhere. I have bought all my Aqara devices always directly from China to save a few Euros, but the unavailability of this one makes me really wonder. Is it not produced by the same manufacturer, or do they sell it under a different brand in china? Or is it already discontinued?
Thnx for the comparison Shane!👍👍 My indoor Aqara sensors work just fine, but the outdoor ones keep malfunctioning. Hope the Thread version comes out soon though
Great video as always Shane. I love their motion sensors but definitely would like to be able to adjust them, so I will be buying at least one of these. Yes, I definitely have a need for occupancy sensors. I would absolutely buy multiple if it was available in the US.
Waiting for the thread and I refuse to buy anymore hubs ever! I want to automate my bathroom light and it must be quick and transparent. My guest need to be able to go in that room with no special prep. And it must be able to turn on the lights instantly and they need to stay on when the room is occupied with no hand waving or other nonsense!
If the Aqara FP1 occupancy sensor was easy to acquire in the US, I'd have 3 already. Don't feel like experimenting with sellers and waiting for Aliexpress on something that expensive
Hey Shane is there a sensor or anything i can do (Maybe a shortcut) that will keep the lights on when it senses motion. For example I had a sensor in the bathroom and when i was in the bathroom (washing my face, brushing my teeth, etc) and I’m moving around but the lights still turn off. I want something that will keep the lights on while it sense motion and turn off after a few minutes of not sensing any motion. Is there anything I can to help with that? P.S. love the videos! You are so much help. Keep it up!
Hey thanks for watching Devin. This is the tricky thing about motion automations and why I haven't used a lot of them in the past. They are really hard to get just right. In theory, something like an occupancy sensor, as briefly mentioned in the video, would be more ideal for situations like this. That said, the options on this new P1 seem to give me better control over this. Just as I showed in my closet, I can turn the sensitivity to high and the timeout duration really low. That helps a lot.The automation that turns the light on when it detects motion and turns off after 2 minutes. You can also try using "stops detecting motion" as the trigger. They usually take some trial and error to find the combination that works right for your situation.
Set your automation to turn off the lights after 10 minutes (or whatever time). The motion sensor should reset the automation timer whenever it senses motion, so as long as you don't stand perfectly still for more than 10 minutes, the lights should stay on while you're there. I have my office lights automation set that way and it works perfectly.
I am done with motion sensors and look only to using occupancy sensors that uses radar. Once we start to see these hit the market it will change the smart home forever.

They list the operating temperature at -10℃~+55℃ (14ºF - 131ºF).
Loving the content on your channel! QQ is there a feature or a way of preventing pets setting off this sensor?
Thanks for watching! No, unfortunately there is no way to prevent pets from triggering the motion sensor aside from placing it strategically where pets would not roam.
Can anybody tell what sensor they are using exactly?
Can you power these on and off or are they constantly powered on?
Battery powered and constantly on.
Does anyone know if an Aqara motion sensor can control a Meross light switch? Or do the motion sensor only control aqara devices? Thanks for any help!
Yes it can if they both support HomeKit. You can create the automation in the Apple Home app.
@@ShaneCreates thanks so much for the help! Love ur channel.
I think I have the ORIGINAL motion & noice sensor - a Maltese. They were bred in Italy to be alert dogs for anyone trying to enter the King/Queens chambers, and 400 years later they are still barking at every noise within a block of the house and any movement past any window or door, day or night.
😂😂😂
Can this work with SmartThings?
For some reason I cannot find this P1 model on AliExpress, not even in the XIAO MI store. I only see it on Amazon and elsewhere. I have bought all my Aqara devices always directly from China to save a few Euros, but the unavailability of this one makes me really wonder. Is it not produced by the same manufacturer, or do they sell it under a different brand in china? Or is it already discontinued?
It is not discontinued. It’s available from official Aqara retailers.
Good stuff. Loving my Aqara gear. Great to see new improvements on the way!
Love it! Just bought three. You keep making me spend money 🤣
Haha thanks for watching Greg. Enjoy the new toys!
Thnx for the comparison Shane!👍👍
My indoor Aqara sensors work just fine, but the outdoor ones keep malfunctioning.
Hope the Thread version comes out soon though
Great video as always Shane. I love their motion sensors but definitely would like to be able to adjust them, so I will be buying at least one of these. Yes, I definitely have a need for occupancy sensors. I would absolutely buy multiple if it was available in the US.
Thanks Gregg!
Occupancy might get me to come back to Aqara
Please ,It ist compatible with Mi Home ?
Mine doesn't show in home app
I would love the occupancy sensor
If the Aqara FP1 occupancy sensor was easy to acquire in the US, I'd have 3 already. Don't feel like experimenting with sellers and waiting for Aliexpress on something that expensive
Another great video...waiting for thread version!
Thanks Tony!
very good video👍💯
I have the Same and its Works....
Can i use any zigbbe sensor
Great video! Btw What's that phone case? Looks nice.🤩
@@markjohnson2754 what sensor do you have?
@@ShaneCreates ok im definitely gonna try that stops detecting. Thanks for the help.
@@devinjohnson44 The earlier Aqara motion detector. Not the new P1.
Awesome video and breakdown, Shane! I like the Aqara motion sensor because of Zigbee and fast response times 💨
Thanks Adam!
Great review! I have a small home, just need to find some creative ways to use these … while overcoming my anti-tech wife :)
Great Video! I totally agree Aqara is bar none the best accessories for HomeKit!
Thanks Don!
The lives are a whole lot of fun btw
Thanks Hunter! 😃
3:00 mins in he finally gets to the point.
Chapter titles are placed in every video for your convenience. 😉
Why wouldn't they pass the light sensor to homekit? That's really strange.
Idk. Been like that on the original one for years.
@@ShaneCreates Are there any sensors that do send the light readings? Philips hue?
I am done with motion sensors and look only to using occupancy sensors that uses radar. Once we start to see these hit the market it will change the smart home forever.
