There's a larger, more relevant point being made regarding powerful people receiving immunity from wrong doing
I wonder if Mr. Flanagan got penalty points for his first offense, and went to court for his second offense that resulted in a fine, and a suspended license for six months, would he be so admiral and sure of himself.
Because Ming can't understand why he's complicit. If Ming said soemthing like "yeah I was corrupt also" then fine. But if the politician doesn't get that their participion in the act doesn't make them corrupt then the bigger story is the dumbness of politician who's making the stink. That's why they can't talk about the other issue, cuz Ming doesn't have an excuse ready.
It's like if a drug dealer approaches you to buy drugs, and then you do, then you smoke the drugs. Then you complain in the Dáil that drug dealers are out of control. Did you buy the drugs? Yes. Did you smoke them? Yes. But the drug deal APPROACHED ME THOUGH!
The legendary Vincent Brown, so missed from the airwaves. Nobody ever came close.

@@jamesb1710 Flanagan's body language is very revealing. He's like an adolescent child being given a talking to by his parents and first trying to talk his way out of it and then semi-going along with it, hoping that will help him get through the grilling and maybe create a better impression on the viewers. It didn't work.

Anyone else seen the documentary about Ming? It's here on UA-cam, it's hilarious. It's called "the life and crimes of citizen Ming". The film is like something from Father Ted, without trying to be.
Yes, although Vincent has a great reputation, in this case he completely ignores the bigger picture (a corrupt garda or gardaí). As solid proof of this corruption, Ming would've needed to go ahead with writing the letter whether he wanted to or not.

I used to live in Spiddal Co Galway in the 90th. One week I had business in Glenties Co Dongal. Coming home , I had a letter from the local Sergeant in Glenties , telling me , to turn up at local court to face charges for not paying the road tax.
Saturday evening I passed the Guarda barracks and there was light on. I went in and told my local Sergeant the story. He smiled and said , there was nothing he could do about it.
The following week I was in Glenties again. The Friday I returned I had another letter from the Sergeant Glenties. As far as he was concerned , it was not necessary to appear in court.

Vincent said at 5.45 that 'you're distracting this from the main point, that you initiated this by writing the letter' - what an idiot, the main point here is not what letter ming wrote, or the points he did or didn't get, it's the fact that the gardai are comfortable with giving special privileges to politicians. He's pointed out corruption and Vincent is more interested in a letter that brought on corruption. It doesn't matter what initiated corruption, what matters is that there is corruption. Minor corruption, maybe. But corruption none the less. Fair play to ming for bringing it to light. Vincent has probably gotten away with a few himself and is biased on the whole subject.
Ming got caught availing of this corruption ,got caught and then is now patcher turned game keeper all of a shot .HE wrote the letter !
How a TD could mental gymnastics themselves into thinking their pointing out of a corrupt action that they partook of would absolve their part in it.
That's why Vincent is hammering this point so hard. It makes no sense whatsoever.
I came to Ireland in 88 to open up a factory in the Middle of know were. Rosmuc, Co Galway.
Being German, driving a Merc,driving from time to time a bit to fast on my way from home , Spiddal, to work. There was a local sergeant, small fellow, ginger hair, Stephen I think, who was after me, all the time. He stopped me for dangerous driving a few times (one should not do that anyway) and must have been wondering why nothing ever happened to my driving licence.
I was protected by the local Guard in Rosmuc. I think because I gave 15 lads a job. It was not right , but nice of him.
The country is in a economic/social/political mess and those clowns are yapping about a few irrelevant penalty points,pass me the bucket.

Let's see all these people focus on corruption in the system rather than so much on the way one individual went about whistleblowing. Completely ridiculous attitude of "If you speak up we'll focus on how you've gone about it and ignore the wider truth you may have shed a light on".
I agree, it's the same question for over 30 minutes. Vincent Browne is a journalist, not a TV host.
It's true, he was wrong to ask for the penalty points to be cancelled and he should own up to that but why is Vincent Browne consistently ignoring the issue of the gardais' wrong doing?
I guess he's been availing of getting away with penalty points too.
If Luke had been thinking he should have contacted the garda ombusman before he sent the letter and explained the situation to him. This way he would have had some kind of support when it came to providing evidence of potential corruption. I think he wrote the letter to be honest to test or perhaps "bait" the cops into considering committing a potentially corrupt action.......
@@iamthegame09 how can you bait a cop into breaking the law if its something he clearly does and often how many others in power have done this but the ordinary man has to pay a fine and take the points thats the point he is trying to make yet they are oblivious they have clearly done this themselves and seem overly angry at him for highlighting it . How can senior officers erase offences of wealthy ppl but everyone else has the full court on them ?
Sometimes when recounting what I've done, I might mention details like where I was going, why did the host of the show find this so baffling? I don't know the players here, but this makes me doubt the sincerity of the host.
Because by stating to the police that he was going to the Dail (Parliament), it appears that he was trying to use his position to influence the situation.
There seems to be a lot more to this than what is already known... makes ming look extremely foolish...
I might also add that this muppet has hardly been seen since this TV appearance. Beforehand, he would be appearing before the media, every chance he would get.

It's nonsense, if he chose to have nothing to do with the quashings or if he didn't send the letter, Then he would then have no evidence that the licence points could be successfully quashed.
It would only be a random Garda making a shady offer with no certainly of success: No proof that it wasn't just an individual Garda, talking big.
Even if what he knew what he was doing was wrong, the proof of experience was more then worth it. Like when an undercover cop needs to successfully buy drugs before making an arrest (to ascertain wither or not the target is in fact a drug dealer).
If the points weren't actively quashed you'd almost certainly have people making statements like "the individual Garda, was acting under a misapprehension or individually, and there is no evidence from within the force of licence points being quashed for important people" Vincent is acting as if he can't believe Ming didn't take the favour and keep quiet about it. which in the context of the accusation, is illogical and makes Vincent look like a dunce.

If Ming didn't try to make himself out to be innocent he’d have been better off. If he held his hands up and said that he participated in illegal or unethical activities and that he is as much to blame as they are without trying to look like the white knight he’d have gotten more support. He’s playing both sides. Although it seems to have worked out for him in the long run.

You wouldn't see another politician having a debate about this, he is really trying to make a point despite Browne's obviously blocked ears and attack, of course Ming is a bit uncomfortable about a personal attack based on a national problem. I cant imagine anyone else would keep their cool, he held up well considering Browne was hitting his crazy juice pretty hard tonight.
Of course it's a national problem, but, those who play any part in perpetuating national problems such as trying to take up on offers of getting points erased is party to the perpetuation. Then they deserve to be under the spotlight when caught. When Ming was approached by the Garda, he could have asked himself - is this legal? Clearly it's not. So he could have taken the penalty like a good citizen. As Ming retrospectively concluded "Maybe I shouldn't have followed through with that".
But what he did was legal. There is legislation for what he did, the Garda just told him about it, why would a garda be so aware of exemptions in the law for members of the Dàil? Maybe because he goes to these events often and tells all the TD's . He is just saying it's wrong that it's encouraged. I think he is talking about societies views towards them more than trying to defend himself. Everyone will complain about what he did because that's what people do but since the whole country does this through illegal means he should not be targeted like this. He speaks out about it and he is the only one in trouble. When did we start punishing whistle blowers like this. Yes he was caught but that doesn't make him evil and everyone else a saint because they stay quiet.

I'm not Irish but the interviewer seemed to get completely sidetracked. He was so relentless in trying to vilify the politician that he forgot to address in equal measure the corruption in that particular service.

Ming is not a break from the status quo his politics vary from shallow to opportunistic. People sometimes find it hard to look past his views on drugs, and see a rebellious maverick. Clearly anyone who takes advantage of his privileged position in society has questionable scruples. No more then the bankers, FFers and property speculators took advantage of their positions. He is no alternative to the establishment, and little more than just a colourful figure.

What a poor host Vincent Browne is, I support most things Luke Flanagan is in favour of, but I agree he was wrong in his actions. The way Vincent Browne conducts his show is nothing short of pathetic, similar to the antics of a bully.
