  • If you want a synthesizer that evokes the sound of the 1980s, the Roland Juno-106 is it. Providing unprecedented patch storage and MIDI connectivity, the 106 was state of the art when it was released in 1984-and it still has a sound not quite like anything else.
The Juno-106 uses a DCO for its core sound generation, providing super-stable and reliable tuning. This combined with its distinctive Roland filter and unmistakable swirling chorus tones earned the 106 a strong place in the history of electronic instruments. Providing stellar pads, warm stabs, and rich, cascading atmospheres, the Juno-106 is perhaps one of the most compelling keyboard synths ever made.

I’m so glad I bought one these 15 years ago, bought a soldering and desoldering gun, studied the schematics, bought an oscilloscope and managed to bring this beast back to life! Special thanks to the Internets for giving me the necessary info too 🙏🏾

Honestly I think that is the best way to do it. This way, you've learnt how to keep it going for years and years to come and don't have to rely on expensive servicing. I did the same thing with a Wurlitzer 200A.

I need to recap my dx7, my 200a keeps blowing fuses too. I bought a recapping kit for the dx7, and a good weller dial temp soldiering iron. Anything I need to be cautious of while desoldering and soldiering new caps? I really dont want to destroy anything. I do have soldiering experience with guitars and cable making. Never worked a circuit board before though.

    • @MrSunnyBra
      @MrSunnyBra Рік тому +1

@@anonymous_friend I burnt a few tracks completely when removing the faulty filter chips with the desolder gun and had to use a multimeter to find where the tracks led to and then solder a few jumper wires from pin leg to pin leg. I also wrecked my first desolder gun by holding it vertically with the board on the table because the solder wasn’t properly sucking to the back of the gun and it got clogged. Second time around, I used a clamp to hold the board on its side so the gun was horizontal while desoldering.

The Sound or Juno puts me in such a weird amazing place. Feels like a synthwave world that i miss, tho I've never lived in it. It gives me a feeling of nostalgia over a time that never existed. It's crazy. I'm a bit drunk right now as well

As a teen, I thirsted over the Juno 106 when I saw their advertisements in Keyboard Magazine in the 1980's. I even saw one up close in a music store, where they just got one & they were unboxing it. But the money was too much for me, so never got any. I was a fan of the multi-colored labels on the control chassis, so I emulated that for a synth program I was coding on my C-64 for a highschool project around 1985-86, with the UI on the screen looking like a Juno 60/106, with the colors, buttons, numerica displays & sliders.

    • @stevewahlmusic

I also loved it, it caught my attention enough to try to replicate it on the JP-08 and then on the Kronos with AL-1. (I'm pretty obviously battling vintage GAS with "but I can already make those sounds with what I have if I just try." I'm not sure how much longer it's going to work.)
Anyone else trying to replicate this sound, it's pretty much white noise into the filter with high resonance, and then have the filter track the keyboard so the pitch changes. But if you try to hit exactly the notes he's hitting, you find that the keyboard tracking is not set at 100%, but something closer to 50%, the pitch changes about 1 octave when you move up two octaves on the keyboard.

I love the 106! It was my first synth in 1985 and I still have it and use it often. You pretty much can't make a bad sound with it. I also have acquired a Roland MKS-7 which would have been the coolest rack mount synth module ever except it wasn't. Still, it's awesome if you have a 106 to control it with.

Sheer luck had me moving to Pocatello Idaho (from NC ) recently, which just *happened* to be 40 minutes from one of the handful of Roland tech school graduates/geniuses who can work on these as Roland would. 400 bucks later (recapped and replaced the cmos chip) and she's literally good as new. 675 all in for the best sounding synth I've ever heard !

Several years ago Behringer announced that its engineers had patterned the Deepmind 12 after Juno-106, and it's one of the reasons why I bought one. Behringer didn't stop there and added a bunch of other features and effects that truly takes the DM12 far beyond the Juno-106's vintage capabilities. If it were just now being announced at NAMM, I suspect that it would be just as exciting an event as any other synth in its price range! In the 80$ the Japanese changed the game on how everything was made 😂 simple no more tons of knobs and pots to tune your synthesizer and no more drifting out of wack lol 😂

The 106 is one of the few vintage synths (maybe the only one) I do not regret selling over the years. It’s okay sounding at best but easily one of the most overrated IMO

That was a Juno 60. Very similar, but not exactly the same. There's juuuust enough difference and pros/cons to each that one could reasonably talk themselves into owning both, budget permitting.

Actually, they said they didn’t use a Juno. I think the main theme arpeggio was done on a Two Voice. Sorry, nerding out.

I have here a 106 and i find it a very flat sounding machine .
The Juno 6 /60's are more my taste .
