My name is Jay Swanson - I'm an American writer living in Paris on an artist visa. Paris (yes the one in France) has been my home for years now and I have every intention of staying here for as long as they'll have me. I write science-fiction and fantasy, vlogged daily for 3+ years, and love pizza a little too much. Now I make videos about visiting Paris, traveling in Europe, and try to share what I've learned along the way. I hope you enjoyed what you found.
Links are affiliate links where they can be - meaning if you click through them and buy something, I'll get some pennies. Thanks! (The FTC wants me to tell you that up front)

In 2011, we took a class at Le Cordon Bleu that taught us how to shop the markets. This was a two week stay, shopping and cooking like locals. In 2022, our sixth trip to Paris, we took a class at Jane’s school. What a blast and very informative.
I ordered the book through your link.
Thanks Tom! Jane and I appreciate your support. I'm looking forward to reading it too :)
there are seasons for cheese ! In France, many artisanal cheeses are still made with raw milk, the flavour of which is closely linked to the food intake. In spring, they graze in the open on lush and varied grass supplemented by wild flowers. At the end of summer, the feasts resume with the return of the rains and the “renewal” of lush grass. During the cold season, on the other hand, the cows' meal consists mainly of hay, supplements and sometimes silage.
Raw milk therefore does not have the same taste all year round. Proof of its influence on cheeses: those made with sunny-day milk, marked by the richness in beta-carotene of fresh grass, take on a beautiful golden hue!
Some cheese AOPs also restrict the authorized production period. For example, Salers must be made between April 15 and November 15, with milk from cows “put out to grass” in the meadows.
Thank you for this!!
Shopping in Paris markets is some of my best travel memories.
That was the only market we were able to go to on our trip. I know much more French now than I did then, grunts and pointing was enough to get me what I needed lol
Ok but I’m LIVING for Cooper’s jacket! It’s more chic than anything I’ve worn ngl
He's the chic-est
@@JaySwanson Living la vida chic-a
One of my favorite smaller neighborhood market is Marché Edgar Quinet near Montparnasse Cemetery - and Marche d’Aligre is excellent for produce.
We took a French Sauces class at LaCuisine a couple of weeks ago thanks to you posting about the school on IG. Sorry it was before your affiliate link.
It's great you run this show. Although in Zurich, I crave to move in Paris soon rather than later..
I love going to markets in France! Absolutely one of the best experiences in France. I would emphasize what you said about having small change. I still remember "la moue" I got when I paid for a couple of apples with a 5 euro note.
Very enjoyable again. I really enjoyed this for sure. I love and miss France.
I love a good market and the French are masters at it. Some of that veg looked superb and any stall selling tartiflette gets my vote as I just love it !
Thank you for this video!
You are so welcome!
it was awesome to meet you and Jane that day....what a great video!
I mean, it’s completely valid to instil fear in people if they’re not going to be polite.
Richard Lenoir! Miss it, finally getting back to Paris this year.
❄️🎄🧸On my recent trip to Paris, I should've gone to the Marche near Bastille early Sunday morning. Awesome recommendations Jay🧀🥐🍾
Next time!
Preordered the book, thanks for the recommendation!
Fantastic!
Such a nice episode!
Great video, Jay!
I would say Place Monge and Rue Mouffetard markets are our favorites, but, mostly by chance, and I haven't been to the Bastille market. One cool thing is that if the market carries on for a few days and you shop there, the vendors start to recognize you quickly. They're probably just increasing the chances of a sale, but, somehow it seems like more fun than that.
The markets are the best reason to spring for an apartment or an Airbnb, if you like to cook. You'll get some of your investment back by eating "at home"rather than a resto.
Thank you Jay for another great video, I feel like I got a short vacation and taste of one of my favorite features of French culture.
We went to Bastille market 2 weekends ago. It was crowded but fun to walk around and take it all in.
Gotta give credit to that transition at 3:47 🤌
addicted to Marche Raspail! Twice a week,I'm there!
Oysters are not extreme lol I love them! Thanks Jay
We were in Paris for a week this past summer and visited Bastille market twice for the delicious Breton crepes & galettes stand. All I can say is go early because they are always crazy busy and close when they are about to run out. Also, for info they are modern and accept card payments.
omg u haven’t watched u in so long
Welcome back :)
I did walk through Le Marche des Enfants Rouge on my food tour and we got a little snack. I would really have liked to eat snails and oysters at the seafood vendor there. Watched a UA-cam video featuring that and it looked divine. I also wanted to go to Marche Poncelet but didn't get there this trip. I definitely want to return.
Sounds like you have a solid plan for the next trip!
7:03 IKEA FOUND SHAKING 🔥
GREAT video, Jay. I'm heading to Britany, France beginning of the year, and will use some of your pointers at the local market. And no, I will never like oysters.
Hahah I said that too, but they're growing on me...
Oh my gosh! The markets!!!!!! Joy!!!!! So glad it will be in Paris in my Pocket! Is that automatic, if we have already purchased it? Thank you!
Sure is, you can find a full page of advice in the guide :)
The markets are dog friendly? It's refreshing to a UA-camr that has their dog tag along. My plan is to visit in the spring with my petit teckel Piccolina. I'm attempting to find as many dog friendly experiences as possible in the City of Lights or is it Love?
6:15 Samosa? How interesting!
Hi Jay thanks for this. Just wondering will the markets be open in January?
Should definitely be! Check paris.fr to be 100% sure, market depending, but they're year round
I just know that my A1 lesson on l’impératif and identifying food items is going to come in handy.
Edit: The formula is ‘Je prends + point + grunt’
Didn't get a chance to check out the markets. Plus it was raining off and on two weeks ago. Got rained on and got sick smh
I need the romance lore. Are they two dating or just friends?
The walkways in the Bastille market can get very congested, and you can get stuck behind slow elderly people dragging their personal shopping cart impeding others from getting around. Also don't buy an item until you have walked the entire market because you may see another vendor selling it for much cheaper after you've bought it.
Market is best for leisurely walks, not rushed shopping
You will be old someday if you are lucky! Nasty comment!
❤❤❤
There used to be a man who made Churros (Chichi in french) They were delicious!! Is he still there?
Hey Jay! We were looking to visit for christmas/NYE. Just wondering if ypu think it will be safe due to the pro Palestinian protests or if it's better to gold off until spring? Thanks, love your videos!
There are always protests in Paris, so I never recommend planning a trip around them!
@JaySwanson thank you for getting back to me. Sorry, I should have worded it better. I was wondering about the Pro-Palestinian protesting going in Paris. Thank you again for the insight!
Which market is this? The length looks a little like Place Bastille, but I haven’t been to all the markets … ??
Ooops, asked too soon. 👍
Hello
Hi
Goals: Vlogger Friend who’s your hype man when a book is coming out. (Dogs & Dogs in Jackets may arrive)
So excited. I TOOK YOUR ADVICE. Staying December 22 to 28th as close to Notre Dam as I can afford at Hotel Notre Dam ! Can we get together for a drink and app? Will be fun?
I get smashed on some booze & then go to the market. Experience vastly upgraded👍🏻🤪
I won't lie, I was in NYC and the raclette cheese smell was not appetizing. I was told it tastes better than it smells.
Personally love the smell and the taste!
Ton chien il tremble de froid, le pauvre :D
C'est vrai qu'il est parfois pitoyable! Mais t'inquiètes pas, il a son doudoune :)
Ah bah ça va alors :D@@JaySwanson
For a real gourmet experience don't just swallow oysters but but chew each a few seconds before.
I'm not quite there yet...
the poor suffering peasants ot paris!...the thinigs the y have to endure ! croissants and hamburgers haha
