Biggest con, first I've attended, but it was quite miserable at times. The people didn't seem particularly friendly to me, especially when they heard I had an English accent.

Ah I'm sorry to hear that! I find it's really hard to make friends in the fandom. I've been here for years and I still haven't found anyone.. it seems a lot of people don't care about others anymore :(

I went to my first furry convention in Texas in October, I honestly found people to be very friendly. I feel like it's easier if you go with someone you know, and if you know people beforehand, either from online or from locals going to the same con.
