  • DO YOU REALLY NEED TO APPLY SPF EVER TWO HOURS?
    Hello love! Cody here with Montarbo Skincare. Always here to help There is a lot of information online about sunscreen application. Feel free to do what works best for you. However, I see a lot of people feeling confused and worried trying to figure out how to “reapply” sunscreen every two hours over makeup during the day while at work even if they don’t spend much time in the sun.
    The biggest issue I see is people not applying enough sunscreen in the morning ( if this is you, then apply every two hours) before you leave the house. However, if you apply enough ( about an almond size amount or more) to your face and allow it to soak in for 15 minutes before you are outside or leave for work, then you do not need to apply sunscreen every two hours unless you sweat, swim, run or are getting direct sunlight. Sunscreens absorb and or reflect UVA and UVB light which break down the chemical or physical properties in the spf which protect the skin. If you work in an office that has lots of windows, then you can be sure that you are getting ultraviolet light so reapplying every two hours would be wise. The best way to protect your skin is to apply enough spf in the AM and layer your sunscreens.
    Use a good amount of sunscreen before applying makeup or a tint with additional sunscreen so you know you’re absolutely protected. I’ll be sharing more about that in my next video soon.

    Sunscreen fear mongering. You hit the nail on the head. Some dermatologists put the living fear in us about NEVER being without sunscreen. Day or night. Indoor or out. Then people wonder why they get their lab results back and they have extremely low vitamin D in their system. Which can lead to other health issues with bones and such. You are so right on about sunscreen and when and how to use it. Finally a UA-camr that makes sense and is not doing this just for views and ranking. BRAVO!!!

    it makes sense the way you explained...I just wonder why all those dermatologists always say that sunscreen should be reapplied every 2 hours regardless if we are outdoors or not. I think its so counter intuitive and waste of my money too, i mean sunscreens are expensive especially those specifically oil free etc. I just do as you suggested, only once a day in the morning unless i am going to be more in the sun then every 3 hours i guess will do

    I needed this because it has been a worry for me, because I use glycolic peels and have lasers etc. I have just had UV protection film fitted to all my windows at home because there is so much light in my house and it's impossible to get away from it unless I pull all the curtains and live in the dark! But who wants to cover their body in sunscreen every day when you're not even leaving the house? It was getting crazy. Now I can have the light coming in and not have to worry!

    I apply i would say about every 4 hours. but yes if im a lot outside for long i might shock everyone and take out my sunbottle and apply extra sunscreen every 2 to 3 hours. i still bothers me that so many people are shocked by it and so few people use sunscreen.

    Thank you! Also, newer photostable filters like the Uvinals and the Tinosorbs are stable for up to 12 hours in sunlight. So if you don't rub it off or sweat, you could wear them outside for many hours. Many European sunscreens can be worn for up to 10 hours, if they're in a water- and transfer resistant vehicle, and will be marketed as such - all tested under tight regulations. It's really a waste of product and alot of headache to reapply so often!

      RemyMartin I couldn’t agree more. It’s also a great way for them to continue to sell you more sunscreen. You guys are on top of it with your spf formulations, and I think what matters most is how much you apply at the beginning of the day.

      I like brush on block for when I need to reapply. Colorscience sell factor 30 and factor 50. It's a transparent matt mineral powder. It means I don't have to mess up my makeup putting sunscreen cream over my makeup - just use it like a makeup powder. x

      The general rule is reapply every 2 to 3 hours if you are actively outdoors or sitting next to a window. Meanwhile, staying indoors without direct exposure to the sun doesn’t necessarily require re-applying since you’re not sweating while indoors. “Dr. Gaile Robredo-Vitas” has a UA-cam video where she used sunscreen at the beginning of the day then used a UV camera to see whether the protection level decreases or not after 8 hours of applying while indoors, check it out its very informative.

    wow I wasn't know this fact. And yesterday I applied spf 50 (it was broad spectrum uva+uvb) at 10:00 am and then I was in the middle of a very very sunny moment at Turkish city at 14:00 pm it was like 15 min but I forget to reapplied my sunscren and now today I was so anxious because of this (because I am very very pale) until I found this video. I have developed an unhealthy fear of the sun. We need to stop perpetuating so much fear around the sun. I literally live in the dark. I have all of the curtains closed in my office and if I go for my evening walk when the sun is basically down I reapply sunscreen. It's miserable. My resolution is to open up the curtains and expose myself to the sun more. I of course will apply my sunscreen maybe twice a day but I can't keep living like this. If I'm in a cafe and the sun is hitting my face I can't concentrate on anything the other person is saying. I'm just worried about my pigmentation and sun damage.

I am very, very careful and drive my kids and family crazy telling them to wear sunscreen. It's such a fine line to walk with teenagers, because it you force the issue too much you end up with a rebellion. Not sure what to do.

      Linda Bilsbury So good to see you today Linda. There is so much fear mongering around sunscreen telling people to apply it every two hours which just creates a lot of money for people. However it’s quite inconvenient and difficult to apply every two hours over makeup and who wants to feel sticky all day. Try to find them a sunscreen that they will enjoy applying and let someone else tell them so they won’t think you’re just being overprotective and crazy. You know how kids are. They never listen to their parents until it’s too late. LOL

I use a no water based sunscreen which I then set with powder in the morning and I noticed no side effect of sun exposure on my skin even though I always forget to reapply it during the day. I indeed do not sit on direct sunlight if not for the 60 min average you just mentioned. I felt like that was working for me but this "every 2 hours" rule made me so anxious about it! I feel more confident right now about my routine, and my poor student's wallet is happy too :D

      Hi, that does make sense since you spend a lot of time in UV. Also we forget that we sweat and wipe our face which can wipe off the sunscreen. It helps to have one on hand to reapply or there are powder sunscreens as well. Let me know if you need clarity on anything. Skin care can be confusing.

I feel like I would look caky if I packed on enough like I usually do with a lotion sunscreen. Also, does sunscreen get absorbed into the skin where you would have to reapply within a period of time?

    • @MontarboSkinCareSanDiego
      @MontarboSkinCareSanDiego  6 років тому +5

      James DeCarlo i’ll be talking about this in my next video. Of course physical sunscreen immediately blocks the sun rays but sometimes it’s never a bad idea to allow the product to absorbed into the skin for a few minutes. Often sunscreens contains both chemical and physical for best protection of UVA and UVB. It’s best to consistently apply sunscreen the same way every time so you have a good habit formed just in case you end up using a more chemical spf in the future.

      I would say it's best to just wash it with a bit of soap if you dont have make up on since your face can get covered with a lot of things during the day so better to start with a clean slate for the sunscreen to work better . The 2 hours is only if you're out in the sun with direct sunlight if you're indoors then once well applied well in the morning is good enough. I hope this helped you

      LeRemy Hello sweetheart. We are always getting ultraviolet light. As long as you apply enough on in the morning you should be fine. Most windows do not have filters on them unless they specifically have been put in. And most of them have only UVB not UVA protection. For instance like in our cars.

      I feel as long as you’re getting good coverage that should be fine, you only need to reapply if you’re in constant Uv exposure. Always good to be cautious. Maybe look more into the tint with research or getting more professional opinions

    Hey Cody! Thanks for the video- I have something a little off topic and was wondering if you could help, literally no one can give me a straight answer (not even my dermatologist).
    I’m a 20 year old male who’s had deep acne (sometimes it’s impossible to pop white stuff and sometimes it’s possible to pop them) and I was wondering how far I should go when using all of my products? Should I not care if my face gets super red and itchy? It feels like the deep acne will never come up unless I burn my face off.
    [I’m on finacea- I put it on during the day (some kind of azelaic acid), then at night I have tazarotene cream 0.1% and I take a doxycycline pill once a day.]

Also, which mode is best to use over makeup? Wow finally someone logical. If we applied the correct amount of SPF in the time frame recommended alot of people would be broke. Random question on my mind, if I applied a Chemical SPF 50+ then followed with a tinted Mineral SPF50+ (bb /foundation coverage) if the mineral foundation separated due to sweat or was wiped off for example would the chemical SPF kick in and provide coverage? Not sure if that's even how it's supposed to work or not but don't know if you don't ask 😊

    • @MontarboSkinCareSanDiego
      @MontarboSkinCareSanDiego  Рік тому

      Hi great questions, once you’re exposed to the UV that’s when spf breaks down slowly. Wiping and sweating will reduce protection which may need reapplication to ensure you’re covered. I hope that makes sense

    Don’t forget the majority of the sunscreen are inactive ingredients which hold the active ingredients stable and most importantly active. They are all chemicals and by nature they degrade at different pace as time goes by. I can ignore the non-fact that you make sunscreen filters only degrade when they’re exposed in the sun, but what about those 70%-80% inactive ingredients? Sunscreen formulation is one of the most complicated skin care products that require, please please please do Not spread assumptions unless there are peer reviewed scientific studies available to support your claims. In reality, no one is putting sufficient amount of sunscreens the first time, missing spots when they do, putting oil-based makeup which are bound to compromise the sunscreen film, and then move around, sweat up, rub off any residual sunscreens that is insufficient in the first place, so reapply every two hours is absolutely necessary. This is clinically proven way of using sunscreens and adopted by all skin cancer councils around the world.

    • @MontarboSkinCareSanDiego
      @MontarboSkinCareSanDiego  2 роки тому

      There could possibly be truths to that especially after being exposed to UV with time. To my understanding UV exposure will break down sunscreen and the bonds or components it has to protect. If not enough is being applied the first round, more application is needed to really benefit. If someone is outdoors for the day in constant exposure, spf should be applied about every 2 hrs
