  • In this video, I take a look at 8 track cartridges, and why they died out. Even though this was an extremely popular format for music for well over a decade, it very quickly vanished. Why? There are a few reasons, which I cover in this video.
The 8 track cartridge took off in the mid 60s. Eventually most cars had an 8 track player in them, and then shortly after home 8 track players became a staple. I certainly recall seeing 8 tracks all the time while I was growing up in the 70s and even into the 80s. They seemed to be everywhere!
People took to 8 tracks because they were much smaller and more portable than vinyl. They took up much less space than records. Plus, you could not take a turntable with you on a picnic, or in your car. 8 tracks suddenly gave people the option to bring their music with them, no matter where they went. Even before the walkman came along, the 8 track was heralded as a fantastically portable medium.
However, an even more portable format was right around the corner. One that would ultimately bring the demise of 8 track tapes.
I still see 8 track cartridges in thrift stores, second hand stores, garage sales and flea markets. They still pop up from time to time. Many people still have a grandparent or an uncle in their family who still clutches to their valued 8 track collection. There are still many folks who regard this format with great fondness.
So, are old 8 tracks worth anything? Do you have an 8 track tape that is worth a fortune? In this video, I also take a look at a handful of 8 track tapes that sell for big money on the second hand market.
Were you into 8 tracks? Do you still collect them? What did you think of them? Did you have a favorite 8 track that you played in your car? Do you think they were better than cassettes? Feel free to leave a comment!
