He was born a commoner and got into the Kingsguard based on his fighting prowess alone. He won a major tournament.
You can dislike Cole, but he has earned his position more than Viserys, Rhaenyra, Aegon, Daemon or Aemond, who only have power because they were born into the right family. They never earned it, they were just given it at birth.
Really don't like this whole "failing upwards" line that people are copying from each other ATM. It's just not true.

@@frankvandorp2059 he earned the right to be the hand of the king? Don't think so. I agree he earned his position to be a member of the kingsguard. He did not earn the title of lord commander because of his valor. He earned it simply because lord commander westerling chose to remove himself from the greens treachery which left the spot open and alicent favoured cole to fill in the spot. He has been failing in all aspects since season 1. Killing Joffrey at the wedding, refusing to train the children equally, killing a small council member and then raising his blade against the lord commander. 32:44 Daeron Targaryen: 4th child of Viserys and Alicent. Book readers noticed that in the beginning title sequence last season (in the later episodes)there were 4 blood lines that came from Vyseris and Alicent's line. Daeron was raised in Oldtown instead of King's landing as a squire of Lord Ormund Hightower, Otto's nephew (Ormund was mention in the previous episode and hes the son of Otto's late older brother who we saw twice last season). There was a Kingsguard who served as Hand before, namely Ser Ryam Redwyne under King Jaehaerys, who we actually saw in Season 1 back in the beginning. It will have more significance for someone who has read the books or is somewhat familiar with the in-world history and lore. But it is a great look for anyone into George Martin’s use of real world mythology including Authurian lore and Celtic mythology for his created world of ASOIAF. And it has some great clues as to the original sin that caused the imbalance of seasons in this world, and how that needs to be resolved in order to heal this created world’s ills.

I realized what my problem was when I watched House of the Dragon. At the level of sensations, I cannot join Rhaenyra, because for me she is not real. Such characters in fan fiction are usually called Mary Sue - an ideal image without flaws, who can do absolutely everything, their thoughts are as pure as babies, and their talents outshine the people around them. A perfectly sculpted doll. The only time I really felt it was during the farewell scene with Lucerys. Emma Darcy's performance is phenomenal, but throughout Rhaenyra's entire storyline I see a huge disconnect between how the woman acts and what is actually happening around her. The latter applies to all the characters in the series, but they are closer to me because they are not ideal. In this regard, Game of Thrones makes me nostalgic. There were no ideal characters, each had their own sin, their own weaknesses, but this was the main charm - the feeling that they were all alive, and their conflicts turned out juicy. And in this series, almost all the characters were purposefully dumbed down, and the now trademark “I didn’t mean to, it’s a mistake” was added. There is no conflict, there is Mother Teresa and 33 fools who jump around her, getting drunk, having sex and killing. I'm sorry that this is the only way the writers could show a strong woman - completely nullifying the intelligence of her competitors and adding political subtext from the real world.

    • @androkguz
      @androkguz 2 дні тому

This feels extremely wrong to me. Rhaenyra is so far from perfect that I might say her only virtue is a 20/20 hindsight and less selfishness than the average player. Still much more egocentered than Viserys and Rhaenys and even than Alicent, whose sin is hypocrisy.
Rhaenyra in her youth was *really* dislikable. A spoiled child so spoiled she seemed completely disconnected from the reality of her position.
She could have avoided this conflict many times over had she *not* mothered not one but THREE bastard childs.
She never took her succession seriously until very very late in her life. If she had, she would have traveled to meet lords and make friends instead of mocking them and then sending her children to make demands of them.
I guess if you find Rhaenyra to be a paragon of virtue, that's cool and all, but I don't. I think she is good, specially compared to the alternative, and her adult incarnation is great at scolding people and not acting. But she is FAR from flawless and that's great for the story. She is simply NOT as right about the situation as her tone would make you believe.

It was not his brother's threat that drove Deamon to act so recklessly now, at his own peril. It was not a threat, but a done deal. That's a difference. The reinforcements would have come, were already on their way. So Deamon had no other choice. The alternative would have been a considerable loss of honor in Deamon's eyes. He would have been seen as weak, who could only win with the help of his brother. So he goes and either makes himself a legend or dies in honor.

I just wished they made Cole a more nuanced character instead of going the Ramsay route and make him as unlikeable as possible.
In the books it's mentioned that he trained young Aemond every day, for years on end, to learn him to fight with one eye. It's suggested he became a sort of surrogate father figure to Aemond.
Imagine how much more interesting Criston's character would be if they had included a scene like that in the show, of Criston being kind and fatherly to a child who just went through a tragedy. We would actually be conflicted about him, instead of just mindlessly jumping on the hate train together.

It's certainly look like it was building up to that and then it cuts to Rhaenyra getting a report that the boys head was severed from the body and that thousands were at the procession. Like at first it kind of tricks you into thinking nothing happened and rhaenyra is just getting a report of the murder but if that were the case why would those two sentences be back to back unless the head was severed again at the procession

i think with daemon and the throne conversation is think they are dancing around a topic that shouldve been already talked about in S1. viserys knew him best and right after Aemma died and otto mentioned how daemon would not be fight because of his impulsiveness viserys said himself "daemon has ambitions yes but not for the throne" and when you actually have a scene between him and daemon you already see what he was concerned about and wanted, which was to be trusted enough to be made hand and not otto because daemon believed that he could protect him better than otto. i think for daemons character we know he loved his brother but held resentment for stirpping him as heir and banishing him (whether or not he wanted it or not) because you can still be upset about loosing something if it was rightfully yours even if you cared for it or not.

No, it's not up to interpretation. He explicitly named prince Aegon to Blood and Cheese. Then later on, Blood and Cheese mention the phrase "a son for a son", a phrase they only could have gotten from Daemon.
This means this is something Daemon said AFTER that, after they asked what to do if they couldn't find Aemond. And it didn't just refer to prince Aemond, because Daemon already gave them explicit instructions about him.
So this is clearly in reference to any son, not just Aemond.

Aegon was merely a "product" of Viserys's classic medieval duty and requires of that time. The eldest son MUST be king. It doesn't matter what he wanted or not. His character is a typical spoiled prince. He's a bad king. As a child, Aemond was bulled (a pig instead of a dragon), so he learned a lesson about being strong and prepared to be bullied. But it’s hard to always be strong and he needed mother’s love and understanding. And this courtesan replaces it for him. Alicent failed in this role for both boys. So, we have this result.

Viserys neglected him and never treated him as his heir, and the result is that Aegon is not only completely unprepared to rule, but also clearly has lacked a father figure in his life. his plan was stupid. neither cole or aegon took into consideration that his twin could've easily changed his appearance since, or that the twin could be away or even dead. it was by luck that he even managed to enter the building. his twin could've literally been stood by the door when he showed up. cole made that plan simply because he was deflecting his own guilt and wanted someone else to blame and fix his mess. it's nothing to do with hating cole. also, it failed massively. it was never gonna work cause it was a dumbass plan.

I could write a full essay about Otto but I’ll keep it short and sweet as saying that. Otto is a hypocrite for saying that Viserys is a belonging and wise king, knowing that he is the one who started all of this, let me remind you that he was prisoning Viserys overtime causing him to die and he says he is loyal but all the things that he has done, was to have his own blood his grandson to rule the seven kingdoms, knowing that there is some who more suited to rule comparing to someone who doesn’t wants to rule.

He says he had assigned the night watch to someone else. Do we know if he was telling the truth considering his behaviour since last season? If he did assign and no one was at the door he's doing a SHODDY job of being a lord commander. Still his fault. first of all he should have never been lord commander. He shouldn't even be in the king's guard after what he did last season, killing lord beesbury at the council. Alicent only kept him around cos he was loyal to her (out of spite for rhaenyra).
