      There are some really cool things about these old Crown Vics. They're slightly higher than their civilian counterparts so that they can mount curbs without damaging the oil pan. The wheels, tires and suspension are designed to hit a curb at 35 mph without taking damage. While not a particularly powerful engine, the 4.6 V8 is such a long lived engine that it's pretty regular to see them hit 1 million miles or more.

    Apparently a lot of US cops really miss the old Crown Vics now that they've mostly been phased out. Pretty much the last full-size, body-on-frame V8 sedan and very much a dinosaur in that regard now that most departments have moved over to SUVs and Chargers etc. This one came from small town Mass so the worst it will likely have had to deal with is their brutal winters!

    • @georgallasj
      @georgallasj Рік тому +14

      Our winters but also the roads in mass are complete shit. Insane potholes and mass refuses to fix them. Cop cars usually have under coatings done each winter so I’d imagine it’s just dirty under but the suspension will prob be the first ticket item to be taken care of.

    The P7B (2010-11, pre 2010 was P71) build code made the Ford Police Interceptor a bit different than regular Panther platform vehicles. Stiffer springs, thicker sway bars, and rear end from the old full sized Ford Bronco. It also had a 300 Amp alternator, larger radiator and cooling fans, and attional fuse boxes in the front passenger foot well. The was designed to sit and idle for hours as well as have a top speed of 140 mph and will corner flat instead of lean over like other Panther platform cars. The backing on the front seats are stab proof and the car was designed to go over a 4" curb at 40 mph without any damage.
    I have a decommissioned 2011 Police Interceptor as my commuter car that was a county Sherrif's car. Very durable and if you set the cruise at normal hwy speeds it gets 24 mpg. And yes. Older drivers still get nervous when they see my car. So many years of Crown Victorias being used for law enforcement still have them nervous.

    the modular 4.6 was a good engine for Crown Vic Interceptors because they were cheap and fairly reliable. but they were underpowered for the weight of the car, especially after strapping on a ton of those accessories. police interceptor fords came with an aluminum roof skin instead of steel like the regular Vic, because it helped reduce weight up high, to counteract the weight of the light bars. many cops of the era preferred the old Caprice police cars, the really bubbly shaped ones, because they had really spicy 5.7 liter LT V8s in them, and were extremely tough and quick. due to cars becoming more and more capable of high speeds, american police cars have gone towards Dodge for the Charger, with the 5.7 liter "hemi" engine, because the Crown Vics were just too slow. i once outran a Vic on an interstate, flat-straight-no traffic, in my 1987 golf gti 16v. they simply didnt have the power to push much over about 120mph, whereas many cars, including my crappy little light weight hot hatch, could run well north of 140mph when you just left the noisy pedal on the floor. the Chargers are capable of somewhere near 150mph on an open and flat highway. and more modern LED lighting has allowed them to handle better due to the reduced weight that is mounted high on the car. many of them actually mount the light bars inside the car, at the front and rear of the head-liner facing outwards, so that there is no wind drag and they have a more sleek and hidden look. "under cover" or "unmarked" police cars often do this

The only difference between it and a police cruiser was a Police decal on the side. He would use the PA speaker to call us out of friends houses, he'd put the sirens and lights on my friends when we first got cars, and we got sooo many funny looks when I was riding shotgun. Nobody ever passed us on the highway, but we did get the finger a few times for no reason.

    They go up for auction all the time. For a time they were a great source of cheap power. Since they all have the v8 they were fun track day cars.
    Most police now use suv's, mostly Ford Explorers called Inceptors and Chevy Tahoe and Dodge Durango. If a cop is driving a sedan it's usually a Dodge Charger. Along with some vans and pick up trucks.

    I had one for work. It was very comfy and the transmission shifted amazingly smoothly but it sounded like a freaking tractor going up hill and made my left eye twitch. It was actually ok in the snow with studs on.
