The amount of effort in this is unreal... great work mate
Thank you sir much appreciated 😀👍
Indeed it was. I remember when I was still in the single digits, age wise, I was so excited when I heard Pac Man was coming to the Atari 2600. Then my parents got it for me. I was so disdain Ted not only because it as no where near the arcade version but mainly because it didn’t have the intermissions. For years after, every time I saw a new version for other systems or computers I would try to find out if that version had said intermissions.....needless to
Say, it took years for me to find a version. I can’t remember the first one I found but it as probably the NES version. Lol
@@BastichB64K - see below. ;) Edit - above.
C-64 was and is my best friend.
Pac-Land stunned me at the arcades.
Despite the lackluster scrolling it's still one of the best early platformers.
It's impressive for a 1984 release 👍
Pacman was one game which designed perfectly, so perfectly infact it really couldn't be improved beyond its original concept.
Pacman really is one game like Space invaders that will stand head and shoulders for years to come when you talk about retro as the bastions of the gaming industry.
Fantastic video as always, going to check out the compilation 👍
You gonna love the compilation , such great work they put into it 👌
I didn't know there was so many Pac-Man games on the C64. Will have to check them out!
Yeah nice selection
This video is awesome. I was heavy into the C64 in the 80s as a teen but had no idea so many versions were out there! Thanks for the walk down memory lane.
No probs , thx for watching 👍
3:23 I remember spending hours with that atarisoft version of Pac-Man even into the 1990s even after I had an Amiga, maybe because it was so pure. Thanks for the great video
It's simple but still plays really well
Pac Land was one of the most played games on our C64 back in the days! Not really because of the music, gameplay or graphics.. For whatever reason - I have no idea, but both me and both my brothers and friends loved it!
The c64 was lucky enough to get quite a few great pac games for sure
The way you ended the video put a smile on my face. Good gamer dad moment.
Thx , my daughter loves playing the C64 stuff ... Kids aren't as cynical about gfx and stuff as long as they having fun 😄👍
Great recap of the history of Pac-Man in arcade form and on the ol’ breadbox!
Cheers thx 👍
There is a very very nice 25th anniversary C64 collection out there that has a beautiful menu, and all these titles to pick from, on a single side floppy disk!
@@Jammet yeah link to that is in the video description 👍
I don’t know how I missed this one. I go through your older videos quite frequently and binge on your stuff quite frequently. How did I miss this one? Sweet! 👍
I got over 700 videos hence making trailers cause hardly anyone has seen even half of them 😂😂😂
Not c64 related but in the mid 80`s i was given the Nelsonic Pac-Man watch as a gift and i must have played that thing to death to the point where i`d rubbed away all the direction buttons flat to the watch and the plastic strap broke. Eventually it stopped working altogether but had great times playing it over the years i had it. A boxed one cost a pretty penny now and wish i`d kept it in better condition but pacman needed to be played and boy did i play it. Anyway, a great retrospective on a pretty good track record of c64 conversions. Lovely Stuff.
Yeah I remember those watches 😄 never had one but looked cool
Great vid, and I agree. Ms. Pacman is my favorite classic era arcade game. I think it just did everything an arcade game of that time should do and it did it well! Loved it back in the day, and it's still one of my favs! Stands the test of time!
Yeah the best Pac game IMHO 👍
Nice to see that Pac-man is still popular with the younger generation! 😂
Great look at all this dot munching madness in the Arcade and on the C64. Also, that compilation looks like a real labour of love with the PDF print-outs and high-score saving for all the games... lovely!
Yeah , Pac-Man never gets old .. the gameplay is just ace 👍. And that compilation is so we'll put together , brilliant!
My son at 10 years of age. Have been playing pacman since he was 6. He loves it.
Pac-Mania was pretty dang brilliant.
Cool conversion
Hey B Man! Thanks for this Awesome Doco. This brought back some great memories of my childhood spent in the arcades. My favorites ard Pacland And Pacmania. Absolutely love the isometric view of Pacmania and having a jump brought in a whole new mechanic for the series. So Much Fun!!! Thanks again for all the hard work you put in just to keep us entertained. Loving the channel! YOU ROCK MATE!!! 😁
My pleasure, Pacmania is very cool on the C64 and the arcade 🕹️👍👍
The recent Pac-Man Arcade by Arlasoft is great. They should add it to the collection. I know it's not official, but it's a perfect conversion that deserves to be included.
Yeah that was a good version 👍
Boy you have been busy! Very informative and interesting video as always. I never knew there were C64 ports of PacMan Jnr or Super PacMan and I NEVER knew about that compilation! I will definitely check that out, thanks :)
Yeah I wasn't aware that Super Pacman got a C64 port until this vid ?!?! ... Learn new things everyday 😀👍
Also, for Pac- Man, Ms. Pac-Man, and Jr. Pac-Man, it's recommended to set the system to NTSC, as the games made for the machines here run REALLY slow on PAL systems (just like how PAL games either run with glitches, or refuse to run at all on NTSC machines here).
I downloaded Pac-Man on my C64 mini a long time ago, but apperantly it's the NTSC version which is exactally what my C64 mini is. USA where I live uses NTSC and the UK uses PAL which is what most C64 gamers in emulator mostly use.
I only ever got a c64 to play my SSI AD&D games (love the machine though)! Still play them today through GOG. Even bought the c64 mini last year for my 6 year old grandson!
Those RPGs were epic !
@@BastichB64K My fav was Secret of the Silver Blades, Pool of Radiance was a mother to get your pc's to survive!
@@geofftottenperthcoys9944 I really also loved Hillsfar .. a bit different from the others but still great
@@geofftottenperthcoys9944 I'd say that's 2nd Edition in a nutshell.
@@NightSprinter Still play today combo of 1st & 2nd ed, with my sons.
Awesome as ever. Had never heard of Junior PacMan, thanks for the nudge.
Thx for watching 👍
Video favoloso,mi e' piaciuto molto.PAC MAN e entrato nella storia dei giochi,il C64 e' leggenda pura!
wow now i can play all of the pacman thank you so musch you are the 64man in my book.
No problem 👍 thank you for watching
I remember playing munchman on my c64. Thought it was great at the time. One of my first games I think. I have a feeling it may of called different things in different regions as looking it up dosent show much. Was a great pacman rip-off
Yeah one of the many pac clones on the C64
Muncman was a TI99/4a Title ported to other consoles. I love it!
@@heinzpilot pretty sure it was a different game. It looks very different
Great video! Now I have to check out Mrs.Pac Man on the C64. With so many versions of a game it's more difficult to figure out which one to try out, unless you have awesome reviews like this.
Thanks a lot , its a great version
Somehow, Ms. Pac-man was the only one I had on my C64 :)
At least it was the best one 😂👍
Top notch work from from Bastich B👍
Thank you , cheers for checking out the vid
Very good compilation. Super thanks!
Cheers thx for watching
Great stuff again, thanks a lot Bastich! 🙏👍
Cheers dude , thanks for always watching 👍
Always a good day when you post a new video. :-)
Cheers for watching 👍
I always thought Pacland was a bit lame, as I had played Super Mario Bros on the NES prior to Pacland. Many years later I realize that Pacland came out one year before SMB. So cudos for paving the way.
Yeah it did and it was the inspiration for Mario Bros so it's a pretty important game in the grand retro scheme
great video, i was disappointed pac and pal never got converted to the c64
Yeah that was a real obscure pac-man game ... I'm actually surprised they converted Super Pac-Man as that too was really obscure
At least the Atari 8 bit micro version of Jr keeps scrolling. Which is good as I like it the most as my personal fave Pac.
Yeah the C64 one I think they just got lazy ... There's no excuse for the non scrolling
You're originally from Durban, South Africa? In 12/1991 me and friend went to The Wheel shopping mall. There was a huge coin op arcade inside. I cant éxactly remember what games but I do remember there was an elaborate games cabinet for a wire frame '3D' space game. It was so very expensive to play, I could only dream and watch the rich (kids) play. I was 20 yo in 1991. I guess The Wheel in 2021 is either no-go crime area now, or run-down closed? Thanks for reminding me of Pacland, I drooled about owning this game on C64 and Amiga. There is a version of Pacman as part of Apple Arcade and it's a very nice version to play.
Yeah the wheels arcade was pretty cool , even then it was a bit dodgy so now going there would be madness 🤣👍 the game you talking about was Starblade I believe by Namco ... We used to drool over the gfx 🤣 the irony is you may have been watching me playing it back then as I went there a lot
@@BastichB64K :) :)
My understanding is Ms. Pacman ghost AI is exactly the same as Pacman. The key difference between the two games with respect to the ghost behavior is that each game had different ways to determine the pseudo-random directions the ghost move when in their frightened state, with Ms. Pacman behavior being seemingly more random than Pacman. The average player will observe both games having the same randomness though--one would have to know & follow patterns to experience such.
Yeah that's interesting , It definitely changes the way they behave and feels a lot different . Thanks for the background info 👍✅
Awesome video as always! 😁👍
Thx 😀👍
Although not available on the C64, there is another version of Pac-Man: Pac-Man Championship Edition
That's an awesome game I wish somebody would convert it , I believe it recently got an NES release
Ah i need to get my hands on a commodore 64
🕹️👍
Already have that Pac Man 25th anniversary on my Kung Fu Flash cartridge, its good. I discovered a few months back, .CRT image.
Yeah I been meaning to make this vid for ages but other ones kept on coming up 🤣👍 it is a great collection though
Great video!
Thx 😄👍
The contrast between Pac-Man and Ms Pac-Man is interesting. You'd think that Atarisoft wouldn't go out of their way to make the C64 version look better than the Atari version, especially since at the time it was very common to have C64 ports which looked almost the same as the Atari version (Jumpman, Bruce Lee, M.U.L.E., Realm of Impossibility ...). And indeed, the C64 version of Pac-Man looks like a lazy port of the Atari 8-bit version.
But Atarisoft also made a lot of games where the C64 version took advantage of the C64's different sprite capabilities. So, the C64 version of Ms Pac-Man is better than the Atari 8-bit version.
As for all those 1988 games ... sigh ... I wish the game publishers realized that they could have made a lot more money with more timely home versions.
Yeah spread out the releases a bit 😂👍
There was another Pac Man, where it was a video game AND a pinball game.
Yeah Baby Pac-Man , it wasn't released on the C64 ... It would need 2 screens . They also never ported Pac and Pal either to the C64.
@@BastichB64K Technically they could have done it with one screen and a custom peripheral. Like a mini pinball machine that plugged into a joystick port and cartridge port.
Must be one of the most bootlegged properties in existence.
Every PD compilation had a "Snack-man" or other variation.
Yeah that's true , God knows how many pac clones are actually on the C64 ? .... Hundreds of guess
Great upload loving everything you are producing, very interesting as per usual between your uploads and rate my takeaway I've no time for any other channels on UA-cam,
Your passion for the c64 has me playing more of that than anything else. Thank you
Awesome 👍 🤣 playing more C64 is always recommended . I'm glad you enjoying the vids .
@@BastichB64K hi pastich 64k good youtube video . there is new pacman games lady pac and pacman c64 . i have pacman for amiga, c64, atari st
@@gaminglazarus4343 yeah I've seen those new ones thx . This video was only covering officially released pacman games.
Wasn't there a Baby Pacman game?
Yeah , it was never released on the C64
It couldn't be released on the C64, it was a hybrid video game and pinball machine... though Pinball Dreams certainly played well on the C64.
"Pac Man fever"
😂👍🎶🎶🎶 I had the record
Ah, if only Commodore simply swapped the joystick port numbers ... So is joystick typing just one of these dirty secrets we don't talk about lest we give Atari owners something to lord over us?
Anyway, interesting info about Bally Midway's unauthorized sequels! I knew about Ms Pac-Man, but it just stupidly assumed they would have learned their lesson and gotten permission for the other games. What about the bizarre videogame/pinball hybrid, Baby Pac-man? That thing was so weird. Troubleshooting and maintenance must have been an arcade operator's nightmare.
I didn't cover Baby Pac-Man cause it didn't get a C64 release and that was the focus of the vid
@@BastichB64K Yeah, I know. I was just wondering if it was also unauthorized, and what Namco thought of that.
@@IsaacKuo yeah I believe it was another unauthorized version ... Hence Namco pulling the plug on Bally
The Atarisoft titles were straight ports of the Atari 5200/400/800 versions done originally because Coleco was making Colecovision ports to Atari 2600 (fun tidbit was they purposely made them poor so people would go out and buy Colecovisions) but all Atarisoft titles for C64 were great. Sad we never got the planned Vanguard. By the way here's that sideways Pac-Man C64 port I mentioned in the preview for this video. ua-cam.com/video/_J5b8zQsKZ4/v-deo.html
Yeah hahaha i read that but didnt include it cause couldn't really confirm if it was true or just hearsay. That sideways homebrew is way too fast hahaha , looks interesting though thx.
@@BastichB64K It was confirmed in an interview with Activision's Garry Kitchen who did Atari 2600 Donkey Kong.
@@GuitarAnthony cool never read that interview lol
@@BastichB64K Not one of Coleco's highpoints but business was business (imagine if the Nintendo deal went through and the NES would have been the Colecovision II everywhere but Japan). We did get Atari making ports for several consoles & computers which were all pretty good.
Pac-Mania is my favorite on the C64. Too bad the C64 port of Mad Mix wasn’t that good.
Pacmania is a lot of fun
Pac Man ports to Commodore 64 were better than their competitors.
Yeah they were quite good most of them 👍
why didn't you show the Atari 800 version instead of that inferior 2600 version?
Because that's literally the one I played ...like I said in the video ?
What's the best unofficial Pac-Man game on the C64?
Honestly I don't know there are literally hundreds of pac clones on the C64 !! I generally avoided them so I can't say .. I played Ms Pac-Man a lot back in the day 👍
Munchy was always my favourite. And it was released quite early too (circa 1983?)
good vid just supported u
Thank you sir , much appreciated
So the Atari 2600 jr PAC Man managed to scroll but the 64 version didn’t.
Yeah I know , I chalk it up too lazy programming cause the C64 could pull that off in heartbeat
It's funny how many Pac-Land players don't realize that Pac-Man can run.
I very really use the run in this game as it usually just gets you killed quicker 😂
Have(had) Atarisoft Pac-Man for my C-64, had Ms. Pac-Man too(which is a much better game), vaguely recall Super Pac-Man gotta Google around and see what csdb still has...
Csdb pretty much has everything in the video
@@BastichB64K Yeah they are a great resource!
Pacland was always my favourite arcade game. I planned on making the missing trips for the c64 but changed my mind and I've started working on a Pitfall II arcade clone. ua-cam.com/video/BLgYK48GvXo/v-deo.html
I think the best C64 version is the 1984 version from Atari. That is the only one that I play. Never liked MS. pacman my self.
Sure which ever you like the best 👍
@@BastichB64K True.... I can only say what I like the best. One thing annoy the hell out of me, and that is when someone create an smartphone version of old games, and then they try to make it into a kind of farmville or candycrush kind of game. My heart cries every time.
Oh that's the worst lol 😂 I despise cell phone gaming personally
@@BastichB64K Hehe.... I play a few. Real Racing 3, hungry shark, Smash hit and original jewels.
@@brostenen no idea what those are 😂👍
As long as you have fun then it's all good
The Atari 2600 version had the ugliest colors and abrasive sounds when compared with austere beauty of the colorful arcade game.
Yeah even as a kid I was disappointed with it 😅 ... Still player it though 😂
@@BastichB64K I was enthralled by Atari games until I discovered the Commodore 64.
ATARI 2600 PAC MAN was HORRIBLE! Both the video, and especially the audio was SO annoying!
Lol it truly was awful , that munching sound is so grating 🤣
