- The symptoms that I experienced and the doctor visits that lead up to the detection of bladder cancer. This is the 1st in a series of videos that document my experience with bladder cancer and its treatment.

In the Fall of 2015, at the age of 38, I was diagnosed with Stage 2, aggressive bladder cancer. These videos are a detailed account of my treatment and some of the helpful lessons that I learned along the way. The story is unfiltered; I don't avoid frightening, painful, or embarrassing topics.
My treatment consisted of four rounds of MVAC chemotherapy followed by a radical cystectomy and prostatectomy with an orthopedic neobladder urinary diversion. Thanks to many excellent doctors and nurses, countless unseen researchers, two extraordinary surgeons, and the support of my family and friends, Summer of 2017 marks my first year of remission.

Thanks for the information. I am going thru the same right now. I had surgery to remove a tumor from my bladder and spent 6 days in the hospital due to not being able to pee. Needed a full irrigation during the whole stay to stop the blood clots from blocking the urethra. Extremely painful, I had 5 different catheters!!!! But i made it!!! Home now and waiting for BCG treatment. 6 weeks and then we wait. Wish me luck......
I appreciate you sharing your story! I’m being checked for bladder cancer next week. I’ve had stage II malignant melanoma at age 20 and have had four pre cancers since my most recent pre melanoma which was just a few weeks ago (now age 31) I also have my story on my channel. I’m scared shitless about potentially having bladder or liver cancer right now. I’ve had blood in my urine numerous times, ignored it six months ago thinking it was mensuration and it came back again a few weeks ago along with right sided back pain, doctors say it’s not a kidney stone and I need to see a hepatologist and a urologist ASAP for abnormal imaging. I kicked cancers butt once before at such a young age and am praying that’s not what’s going on yet again! At least there’s so many good specialists out there and early detection is definitely key! ❤️❤️❤️

Hi I've recently been diagnosed with Bladder Cancer so I am just starting my journey. My symptoms were blood in my urine. My experience with the cystoscopy was completely different to the experience of many on this podcast. Carried out under local numbing injection. The injection was mildly uncomfortable, but no more than that. I didnt look down but did watch the screen as they examined my inner workings. Seeing a tumour on screen was a mind numbing experience. For those due to under go a cystoscopy my advise is "dont expect the worst". You've enough things going on in your head at the moment to worry about a procedure that may or may not be anything more than uncomfortable. 🙏 here's hoping your experience matches my own.
I went through all that this morning. Cystoscope was quite painful but the huge tumor partially blocking the opening quickly overtook the pain. Pre-op in 5 days and round 2 with a larger cystoscope in 11 days. When the nurse asked for a urine sample it was mostly blood. I think I’ll stop looking stuff up…down the rabbit hole! Too much info out there.

I luckiily have anxiety meds so l took that before my cystoscopy. I had no injection. It was mildly uncomfortable but not terrible. I saw the mass on the screen. My urine was clear. Never saw blood in my urine but on my annual check up my Dr said there was blood in my urine. I have a urologist because l had a kidney stone a few years ago. I had no symptoms but l had bladder cancer. My doctor said 100% it was from smoking. I was a long time smoker but stopped a few years ago.
Excellent explanation and great advice. You see blood in the urine, go see your doctor. Don't wait!
I went through exactly the same process in 2018 and had a radical cystectomy in March, 2019.
Get as much information as possible... educate yourself because this is SERIOUS business. This video is a good start.
This is the best video on this topic that I've been looking for. I'm 55 and saw gross hematuria in my urine on the 25th of August. I went to the emergency room and hour later after I peed in an empty water bottle and saw small clumps of red blood cells floating. They took blood, urine, and gave me a CT scan(non contrast). The Dr said they found infection and bacteria in the urine and gave me antibiotics (7 days). Dr told me to do a follow-up with a refered urologist. Saw one, we justed talked about symptoms and he's setting up PSA test, contrast CT, and cystoscopy. I'm waiting to find out when.
I was checking my urine with strips last year for a different reason and never came across blood in my urine at that point.
Super nervous about the cystoscopy.

Thank you. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. I've had a few rounds of antibiotics. Still have an issue. CT scan seemed to say nothing bad. Cystoscopy is next. Did they figure out what was occurring?
@@Mykidwatchesyoutube No.... Going to take another look at 6 months. Its tapered off. Drink more fluids now, taking cranberry "concentrate" AZO. No antibiotics at this point. Might be a "p'state" issue. Who knows. Sucks getting older.

Thank you so much for your video! I found out my urologist suspects I have bladder cancer, blood in urine, pain and pressure galore. I’ve had recurring uti’s all my life but more so the last 5 years. I am 33 and a smoker. I go in for a cystoscopy on next Friday and I’m terrified. They have done ultrasound and ctscan and the local dr sent me to urologist In Seattle wA, a 3 hour drive from me, and they are gonna see me again for the procedure in about a week and a half. I’ve seen blood clot floatys and skin looking floatys so often it seems normal for me. I will definitely keep you updated! You gave me such hope! I don’t feel so scared. I put this off for so long and I’m terrified i waited too long.
The blood part you talked about has happened so much to me while bm and in my urine with no bacteria present so that really what started my process. Have had ultrasound and ct and next is this diagnosis procedure. Your story helped me feel more aware of what could come.
What you're saying is exactly what i went through. Having my bladder and prostate removed next week.
Very well done. I'm 80 and just went through Part One - the cystoscopy which I was able to watch on the screen and actually saw two or three tumors. The Dr. said he'd take those out, probably in day surgery but maybe just one night in hospital. Now I wait to be told when.
The cystoscopy was as you described - a little burning and stinging, and pressure, but it was one of those "grin and bear it" situations. Thankfully it was fast - just 1-2 minutes. I've hurt much worse and for longer periods. So... no big deal. I'm not looking forward to going through it every 3 months for the next few years but it's better than the alternative. However, at my age, SOMETHING has to "take me out." It's just different when it's YOU that's heading for the "big sleep" instead of all the other people you see and hear on TV.

I've had a robotic prostatectomy 10 years ago & have had UTI's every 2 years since the surgery which I felt was odd & Dr's didn't have an explanation for them. I've had 3 cystoscopies with negative findings until last month when 2 small bladder masses were found by my urologist. I'm in my 70's & stopped smoking 30 years ago. My TURB was earlier this week & should get pathology results next week. This will be an interesting journey for me although the prostatectomy was an unforgettable experience with side effects. Not many young men will chronicle their journeys on this topic. My hat's off to you.
Wow so glad your process went through quickly. Here in Canada the process takes about 6 months to get to the point of cyctoscopy.

Thank you for sharing your story I’m basically going through the same thing I was miss diagnose by my primary doctor so you right if you see blood in urine just go to a urologist

However he has had the same symptoms as your describing and his GP has referred him to the hospital, he has his appointment next week for his cystoscopy, and ultrasound 🤞🤞🤞
Going in for a Cystoscopy, And CMG in a few days. Thanks for the heads up on what to expect. I'm apparently getting drugged up for the Cystoscopy, but not the CMG. Hoping for the best, but I have every urinary symptom except blood in the urine.
Great video. Weird. I never smoked and never worked around chemicals or used insecticides, etc. Yet I have a 3 cm tumour in my bladder. The medications I’ve been on have been Nexium 20 mg for 15 years and Olmetec 20 mg for 17 years. I’m guessing one of them may have triggered it. I never saw blood in my urine but it was diagnosed in my urine starting 2007. I had a cystoscopy in 2012 and the urologist said he didn’t see anything. During an ultrasound exam in October 2023 they found the 3 cm mass. It’s terrible to find this out. Today it was confirmed as malignant. It’s coming out in December. I hope it was caught in time. I don’t know. Not out of the woods yet. Thank you for sharing your video. I’ve been through some of what you described.

I had the gross hematuria and blood clots in the urine. My heart doctor said that the blood thinner that I am on can cause this issue and he may have to change the medication. My Urologist had taken a urine sample and the ultrasound of the entire urinary tract. The results of the ultrasound were good and showed no growths or stones according to the verbal report I received. I will be going in for the cystoscopy next, I was told that if they find a tumor it will be removed immediately. Glad you are well again.

I have sins 2015. And now i have 2 diferent cancer in my blader. I make 6 bcg and i must wait until ianuar when i will have next chek. I am 47 jears old. Be strong 🙁

iam 17 and i have a tumor in my bladder . around 1.9 x 1.5 cm in area . i will have turbt in a few weeks . iam so scared. the docs are scared for me. iam the only case of tumor in the bladder in my entire country at my age . idk what to do. iam scared and anxious all the time . i dont wanna fell like this

Hi from the uk, im going for my second turbt op in a month, sick of frequent urination up every hour at night wish i never started smoking im now 59 years old , typical scaffolder drink smoke and party for 40 years, thank god for the British nhs hopefully get a good outcome im t1 grade 2 high risk , good luck fellow people xx.

I'm with you. I had a second cystoscopy recently. My urologist saw the look on my face when he suggested it and immediately asked if I wanted it to be done under general anesthesia. That way he could go ahead and fix whatever is going on while he's in there. Yes, please. Good looking out, doc.
Truth is that it's not unbearably painful. The pain diminishes quickly and is gone within 24 hours. It's mildly painful, and very uncomfortable, but mostly nerve wracking and scary.
@@bladdercancerandtreatment after I came out from being under general anesthesia, I had zero pain or any indication that there was ever anything inside my urethra. I was so relieved by that. I was worried about urinating afterward but it was completely fine.

i can't believe you were awake for the cystoscopy! I just had one a few weeks ago with anesthesia and the after-effects of all of it were horrible! So, either way is bad. It took me 2 hours just to feel okay enough to get in a car to ride 20 miles home. I felt like I had to urinate and burning sensation throughout my body, mainly abdomen and pelvic area. Still waiting on pathology report b/c they did take a biopsy.
Mark Hopkins I had a flexible scope cystoscopy performed in-office with just local numbing-no biopsy, just camera. Was yours a rigid scope? I was under general anesthesia for my rigid scope cystoscopy with biopsy. The flexible scope cystoscopy was such a short procedure. Probably just a few minutes. The pain wasn’t too bad; it was just uncomfortable and unnerving. I kind of wish they had knocked me out for it, but I understand why they don’t.

Can you ask Dr to be put to sleep for costocopy ??
Was be put to sleep an option for the first cystocooy??

@Loni Videos 2 and 4 discuss my experience with rigid scope biopsy and reduction of mass. I’ve had four rigid scope cystoscopies in total; two of them were biopsy or reduction of mass (TURB). I woke up in pain from both TURBs, but the pain was gone within several hours. I don’t remember much pain from the other two, so I don’t think the rigid scope itself that caused the pain, but rather the biopsy and reduction of mass. The last one I had, there was no pain when I woke aside from stinging when I urinated for the first couple times. That last one ended up being laser cauterization for a surface infection in my neobladder, so it did involve some cutting/abrasion, but I didn’t have any pain. Please watch videos 2 and 4 though, since I talk about my experience with TURB in those videos.
I had a cystoscopy a couple of years ago, and the only way they would do it was putting you under with an IV and doing it at the hospital(similar to putting you under for a colonoscopy). I didn't know they did it like this.
From what I can tell, flexible scope cystoscopy, for imagery, is typically an in-office procedure. Rigid scope cystoscopy, for biopsy or other procedures that require tool insertion, is done under general anesthesia. I kind of wish they had put me under for it, but I can see why they don't. It was more mentally traumatic than physical. And it was very quick. Maybe if that Valium had done anything I would have fared better.

Did you do any natural remedies?
No, I just did what my doctors told me to do. I think it's important to do what makes you comfortable and confident. if natural remedies were effective, then that's what doctors would recommend. Whenever I asked questions about natural remedies, the answer from my doctors was along the lines of, "Sure, you can do that!" They want you to do what makes you feel healthy, confident, and strong. But nothing is a replacement for modern medical science. So do what makes you feel good, but also please follow the advice of your doctors.
I had cyscostopy twice no injection. I am a female. They just used numbing jelly. 3.5 tumor found. Had it removed. I had so much bleeding and liver like chunks coming out. Worked in chemicals alot!

I have to go for a Cystoscopy only because there was a microscopic trace of blood in my Urine - doctor said that he can't ignore the fact that it could be bladder cancer, I was surprised that he said that without really knowing for sure - my ultrasound didn't show anything that unusual (a kidney cyst, but lots of people have kidney cysts) - I am scared to death of the Cystoscopy (a very nervous type of guy, very high-strung) but of course, I am older than you and I work with cytotoxic chemicals - I have already postponed the cystoscopy once....wish I didn't have to go for it but......
Johnny Gainor It's better to know than to not know, and it's better to know earlier rather than later. There's a little pain, but it's not so much painful as it is uncomfortable. It's an unfamiliar sensation to be sure. It's quick though. I think most of the discomfort was mental. That doesn't make it any less real. But maybe take comfort that it wasn't actually that painful. My doctor said, "it's better if you relax." Easy for him to say!!
Hi Johnny, I'm going through the same thing right now. Gross hematuria on one occasion, followed by frequent urination and an aching in the bladder area, especially after urination. Bloods and urine analysis came back clear. Like you, ultrasound only found a small cyst on a kidney. Cytoscopy scheduled for after the holidays. I also have Bipolar and this has hit me hard. How are you getting on?

@@kaydeno707 Snap. Had my cystoscopy on the 5th of Jan and diagnosed with Chronic Prostatitis. Been through hell ever since. The symptoms just got worse and worse. I'm starting to feel a bit better now but this thing can come back without warning or never leave completely. I was suicidal with the relentless pain of this thing and had to go into the psych for a bit. Sucks.

I didnt realize that brown pee was blood. Ive had brown pee for well over a year. Went to Doc because I thought I had a Hernia because of pain. Tested my pee and found a lot of blood. My CT scan is tomorrow. Have to say that I'm worried
@izthewiz I'm still waiting for results. Here in the UK It could be a 2 week wait. Just wish they could tell me now to be honest. Its the not knowing puts you in a wierd place.

@izthewiz High hope your well. Im ok at the mo. I dont have any tumours in the Renal system. The blood is comming from kidneys. More tests showed I have stage 4 kidney disease. But my last PET scan showed a small tumour in my left lung. That was a shock to the system. They also told me that chemo is out of the question because of kidneys. my only option is surgery.

Informative videos. Thanks for sharing your experiences. How long do the doctors think you had the cancer before it was diagnosed?
I never asked. I had rusty colored urine once, a couple weeks before more symptoms appeared. Then I had definite visible blood and tissue in my urine for a week or so before I saw the first doctor. All told, I had symptoms for a couple months before I was diagnosed--after a prostate exam, CT, cystoscopy, and TURB.
What did the tissue look like? Was it white?
The tissue looked like a waterlogged scab. It was brown like dried blood.
Please don't ignore the blood. I've had bladder cancer 2x
In your full 5 years of experience how was the cost of all this????
I only tracked cost during the 8 months starting at diagnosis, through chemotherapy, and ending at my last post-op a couple months after surgery. Cost is going to vary depending on your country. I live in the United States and our healthcare system is…weird. Here in the US the cost will vary widely depending on what type of insurance and coverage you have. Also keep in mind that I received this care 7 years ago, so it’s been a while and costs have probably changed since then. Over the 8 months of core treatment in 2015-2016, my insurance was billed $341,147.10 (USD). Of that, I paid $13,584.62. About half of the cost was chemotherapy. Those 8 months spanned 2 calendar years, so I had 2 periods of co-pays, deductibles, and out-of-pocket maximums. In the years since, I’ve had many CT scans, tests, urology consultations, oncology consultations, nephrology consultations, cardiology consultations, and surgical and non-surgical hospital stays for complications. That figure does not include those on-going costs.
Hi i have frequent urination problem for 3years. I take many uti test but no bacteria and also do culture test no bacteria found and no sugar. And i take ultrasounds test 3 times... i have fear. This take enough for me or not???
If it affects your daily life then I think you should see a urologist. Frequent urination was not a symptom of my bladder cancer, but it is a symptom of other diseases that a urologist may be able to help treat.
@@bladdercancerandtreatment i see a urologist and take all test.. all safe.. and i ask the only question.. if i have any bladder stone it will be shown only in the cystocopy test or other ultrasound test
Got microscopic hematuria should I be worried sir it been 2 years still have it?
You should see a doctor and I'd ask about seeing a urologist. There are causes for hematuria outside of cancer.

HI! wanted to say thank you for providing this info! Extremely helpfull. Unfortunately, I peed blood with trace of protein and starting the process. I had a quick question. Did you do cytology test and did you get any confirmation from those results? I am not sure if I captured it from the video. I am 34 and have a CT scan tommorow. I don't remember a cytology test. Urinalysis showed blood and protein like yours and I went from that to a CT scan and cystoscopy. Tumor was visible in both. I'm happy to report that I am indeed doing well! My life got back to normal. I know how scared you must be, but I hope that you can take some comfort in that.

I did have a ultrasound 2 years ago which looked at urinary track and was cleared as a uti with no findings. Wished I knew more back then. Thank you for the kind words! @@bladdercancerandtreatment I did all my test and had my cystoscopy today. I have small tears urethral stricture. It will heal on its own and just need to monitor future scarring. Thank you for the post and videos! I can't tell you how much it helped me. I was way more informed and help me ask the right questions.

@@icediamonds11 Hi, yes I am all good now. Actually two months later it came back and then came a kidney stone which had no pain. The ct scan and ultra sound missed. Stone had calcium oxalate. Thanks for asking asking. How are you doing?
Sir in my biopsy report it say chronic bladder inflammation so it's k right?
You should discuss your diagnosis with a urologist. You might look-up Interstitial Cystitis and see if it fits your symptoms.

These were 2 years ago are you Okay? I commend you for doing these videos the knowledge is helpful to others. The reason im searching bladder cancer....Is i have frequent urination. Been having this for about almost 1 month in a half. Does not mean i have bladder cancer i want to be knowledgeable of cancer symptoms. Might be overactive bladder not sure i see a urologist in 1 week.
marie winter I'm doing well! My life has pretty much returned to normal aside from urinating on a schedule. I did not experience frequent urination leading up to my diagnosis. My only symptom was blood and tissue in my urine. Best of luck to you!

ferdinand joseph I didn't even realize it until you said that, but, yeah, my 5-year mark is coming up pretty soon! I'll call it April 2021. But honestly, I started thinking of myself as a survivor the minute my pathology came back clear after surgery. The transition from active disease to remission was enough for me! I am very fortunate and very thankful.

So I know that you said that you had your five your skin can you tell me any secrets is there anything that you ate did you do RSO did you do turkey tail mushrooms is there anything that you can give me for advice to keep it away I know everyone’s different but I’d like to know if you have any pointers
I didn't do anything except try to maintain a positive mental attitude. My oncologist told me that, in my situation, chance of recurrence was about 10%. I like those odds. So I tried to put it behind me and not stress about it. Can't say I've forgotten about it, because urination affects my daily life and sleep schedule, but I don't really think about it coming back. I just upped my life insurance and accepted the odds.
My doc said after 2 years the chance of it coming back falls way down I wish I couldn't think about it coming coming back.i domt want to die.
Pretty early after my diagnosis, I was telling one of my friends about all the stuff I was going to have to go through and survival chances and all that, and he just said, "It is what it is." It's hard to know what to say to people going through something like this. But that little phrase has stuck with me through the whole experience. It is what it is. Worrying isn't going to make it better. You don't want to die, but you also don't want to spend your whole life thinking about dying either. It is what it is. That kind of became my mantra. The best way for me to come to terms with it was for me to accept that I couldn't change it. I think that alone helped me alleviate a lot of stress. And that might have helped me in the long run. It is what it is.
