i discovered maila nurmi in the nineties and became an instant fan. her sinister/seductive creation is a pop icon and will never be forgotten. REQUIESCAT IN PACE.
It was the enchanting closing music occurring just before the credit roll in Tim Burton's "Ed Wood." It was/is powerfully evocative of longing nostalgia, and is a masterpiece of composition. (Sorry for being a decade late in answering your question.) . : .
About 15 years ago I was walking by the Los Feliz bakery and saw her there talking to someone, probably a fan. I wish I had approached her to speak to her.
I never cease to be amazed of her accent. This woman is a Finn and she spoke English almost as well as an a American would. My broken fingrish is just mumbling, compared to hers. A true diva. May she rest in peace.
she was so cool ,the original elvria. As a kid in the 60s i watched all the great horror flicks and the cheesy ones as well, owned tons of famous monsters mags, still have some of them, Maila Nurmi was so beautiful and scary it was impossible not to love her. Plan 9 was and still is so fun to watch, super cheesy !!! As vampira she was just to cool and sexy for me not to love her and even cut her picture out and stick it on the wall in my room. Apparently at this time too, Bela himself was looking-in with Ed Wood? In the Burton tribute flick Bela says: "Vampira . . . come to Bela (doing the hand thing) . . . COME to me Vampira!" and then remarks to Eddy Wood "Get a LOAD of those JUGS!!" -- one truly great celluloid moment. In those days all TV was live with no retakes or corrections of errors of whatever. If something went wrong, it was history but not recorded. In the interviews she has a prettry noticeable Finnish accent. Pretty interesting that she retained it that much, even after having lived in the U.S. almost her whole life. It's totally gone when she's in character as Vampira though.
Does anybody know something about the photo, shown at 5:47 - 5:53 ? The time and place. And where I can find it ? I would like to add it to my Maila Nurmi - Collection.
i hope that one day the author kim newman would use ed wood as a vampire in one of his anno dracula stories. lugosl would'nt be there since in the anno dracula universe he died in 1918 but still...
Do we know who stole her memorabilia from her family yet? I know there is supposed to be a book, The Vampira Diaries coming out... but it was promised in print in fall 2019 with a gofundme raising almost $21,000..then a release in early 2021..seems like the project is having trouble. Is there any more reliable information on any of these topics? I'd like to buy Vampira merch ethically for once..meaning, in the name of (in)human decency, her FAMILY should profit. 🦇
How old was she , when this interview was shot ? I calculated, about 72-74 or so, right ? Call me a pervert, but she still looked great at this age. Not necessarily younger, but old AND NEVERTHELESS attractive, not like most old women with this typical granny-look. Her facial expressions were still seductive at this age.
The early-mid fifties were SO conservative, people were looking for ANY escape from the humdrum & boring, ridged lives they were conditioned to live. Vampira(Nurmi) was like a lighting bolt to the world(James Dean was interested in her). I've seen a rare early photo of her- she was of Swedish decent- beautiful with blond hair & blue-green eyes. I don't believe she OR Lucy had any "Communist" tendencies- despite what anyone else(or my dad-lol) says.
U know... In her life time if she would have done cons she would have made money on fampira if she didnt try to make money like cassandra buy celling mechindice
My assessment of her is that she was something of a narcissist, and a pseudo-intellectual. She was beautiful as a young woman, and managed to use her artistic creativity to create a unique character. But it wasn’t all that unique, being based on Morticia Addams. Much of her story is convoluted or invented, and her excuses about being blacklisted don’t ring as true. More likely, she just had a difficult time selling the character. The television studio wanted ownership of the Vampira character, and she refused to sell it to them, choosing to go out on her own and make a new show instead. When that bombed, her career was kind of kaput. By the 1980s, she showed her true colors again by suing Cassandra Peterson for $10 million over the Elvira character. Reports are that she was involved in the preproduction at first, but walked away from it when her choice for the actress (Lola Falana) was turned down. She also was not from Finland. She was born in Gloucester, Massachusetts, but grew up in a community of Finnish immigrants and their descendants.
What a fuggin' ego. If it hadn't been for Ed Wood, I would have never heard of her. And I'm old. LOL Well, I guess she never got the fame she so richly deserved. In her mind. Not the kind of person I'd like to hang out with.
Yeah, but she still praised the hell out of Ed and her experiences she had with him. We have all mistakenly pre-judged someone. It's really ironic how Ed Wood's shlock gave her a second career throughout the 80's and beyond.
She even admitted in an interview that most people at that time (I think this interview was filmed in the 1990s) would not have heard of her if it wasn't for Ed Wood.
Your an idiot she's iconic if not for her their would be no Elvira show some respect your talking about her are you not so case closed. She's one of the og of the goth scene.
I think Vampira looked even more beautiful in her old age. She was truly a free spirit. Rest In Peace, dear lady. 🤗

she was a marvelous personality and character.
she was a friggin blast.
The irony is: Morticia Addams was the inspiration for Vampira, and Vampira was the inspiration for Lily Monster and Elvira. That's odd...
She tried to sue Elvira for copying her act and failed.
