Been searching for a review with a good tone for the post 2023 version of the moderns with voice 3. Thank you for the detailed explanation. Voice 3 sounds amazing with your setup.
Because it genuinely sounds better lol. They are active pickups, even in passive mode. It’s a “voicing.” The Open core Classics are voiced to sound, well, classic PAF or hot PAF tones. They’re also Alnico 5s. Totally different magnet.
The only active pickups I've really liked have been the EMG 707 and 808. I've always wanted to try the X variants, but don't want to spend to money on one.
In my experience, I’ve not like a single Fishman pickup I’ve played on. Returned every guitar I got from sweetwater that had them. I always thought maybe the feel of the guitar was off, but the three all had the same pickups: Fishman fluence (moderns, open cores, and the Javier Reyes signature ones). There’s a certain deadness to them that doesn’t sit well with me.
Been my experience too have had like 4 guitars with moderns did not like any of them and then I REALLY tried to get into fishman tried the Abasi, opencore, Townsend,KSE, fluff, and I honestly hated all of them I am just not a fan of fishman. I found that when plugging into computer and monitors through VST or even load box and into IR so using IR and stuff not ways they definitely did shine but I play 80% analog fully besides recording here and there will be direct but fishman feel like for the bedroom guitar players that have heavily taken over and plug into a laptop and go types fishman work great
Same. I can’t stand them. Sort of have a really dull feel and sound that makes me wonder how anybody gets anything good without a ton of EQ to clean them up. There’s something nasally about the low mids with the regular Moderns
"every guitar" ..... how many guitars did you return to sweetwater lol. But passives are better imho. I like the classics better than moderns (based on clips i hear online).
@@DavidJosephBoth I’ve returned three. For some models I’m interested in, there’s no way for me to give them a go before buying them in person. With that in mind, after 30 years of playing, I’m very picky about guitars. I like active pickups, just not these PCB-based ones.
Hi John, very interesting! I have on my EC1000 Deluxe evertune fishman classics and I like them, but this comparison made me think :) Do you get that nasty single coil hum when set to the single coil position? When I select the single coil mode, jeezzz it's terrible, as they are active pickups, I've expected to be hum cancelling.. maybe the wiring is not quite right (what actually already happenned with other ltd guitars and I'Ve fixed it myself.) Cheers!
I have the regular Moderns....I like them I just wish they went with an easy quick connect system like EMG......I actually use the EMG quick connect to connect my moderns but problem is I only can choose one voicing....eventually I have to rewire them.
my schecter KM7 MKIII artist has (obviously) Keith Merrow Fishmans. (new models have Lundgren pickups) they sound pretty good, very drastic differences in the voices and pickups selection looking for passives at the moment
I didn't like the KM bridge pickup that much on mine. Was thinking of putting in one of these Open Core Moderns in the bridge, but keeping the neck the same. I traded the guitar in the end though as it just sounded way too metallic & clanky for my preference. But because the KM set is the passive size you could easily swap to passives - and then you still have a battery compartment to run a boost, active EQ or whatever if you wanted. Or you could try one of the other passive sized Fluence pickups like the Javier Reyes set, they sounded really cool in the demos I've listened to.
Killer tones! But the no pickup ring thing is a turn off. Makes it look like a frankenpaul. Can that be remedied by putting your own on or do they not fit?
They sound alright. They look good, but you tube SUCKS! I always get a dulled down version of the audio. Its weird because I hear the bass strings really well and the higher notes (with your High Gain) kind of sound lower in volume. Not sure if thats youtube or maybe how you recorded it? I love that guitar though. Its fricking beautiful.
Tried open cores in one of my guitars and didn't like the sound. On top of that - who needs another piece of gear to have to keep charged (or constantly change batteries in), and always remember to unplug? No thanks!
No thanks... I have an ec1000 with a 57/66 set and they sound much better than this, the impression I had is that regardless of any voice used the pickup sounded the same...

I would buy a “Best of UA-cam product demo songs” album!
Fishman Active X2N lookalikes, YES!
These will be in my sight for future upgrades!

The blades on the pickups look cool! And I am glad they added voice 3.
Been looking for a review on these pickups for quite some time. Thanks so much for reviewing! 🤘
Killer pickups! I really like them. Got my first guitar with Fishmans this past year and I'd definitely be up for trying more. Killer riffs too :)
Thanks man! Those Fishmans sound good in your hands for sure!
Sounds huge! These are probably a good choice if i want to go back to active pickups
It would be awesome to hear a comparison of these vs the Will Adler and RZK set
killer demo!
Thanks!
Voice 2 passive is really cool
Why not voice 1 active?
Or do kids still wanna hate active humbuckers?

For me it depends on the mood, riffs and amp etc. Both have their use!

Are these compatible for upgrading my Les Paul? I am curious whether some of the tone knobs would be redundant here

I'll stick with the Duncan JB :)

Bro, you should get some Bare Knuckle Painkillers! They’re so sick in mahogany guitars.

Do the classics sound anything like the EMG 57/66?
Voice 2 or "passive" is always there best on all of there sets and that’s something lol kinda shows me I just want good passives
sounds great what is the black tape by the bridge for?
I believe It’s to dampen the noise resonance in the strings. Similar to the function of a fret wrap 🤘

Should be no problem adding pickup rings. I agree with you. Direct mounts are much more of a hassle to swap as well.
What’s that on the bridge?
Some tape to mute resonant noises

Sounds weird... that's not supposed to happen but sometimes it depends on the device
I absolutely hate Fishmans. Way to dry, way to shrill and brittle, way to noisy.
Can not stand the open wah fishman sound. EMG all day every day.
Tried open cores in one of my guitars and didn't like the sound. On top of that - who needs another piece of gear to have to keep charged (or constantly change batteries in), and always remember to unplug? No thanks!

@@marcelojulio interesting, to me the voices absolutely have a different sound and feel. Maybe something was wrong with the wiring?
No. Not worth the hype or the coin.
Marketing and branding in the same vein and Audi and Mercedes.
I respectfully disagree but in the end as with all pickups it's about taste and personal preference
As an S5 owner I am confused by this statement. Definitely worth the coin, if you can afford it…
