In this video we build a DIY smart mirror using a raspberry pi, a two way mirror, led tv screen, and Magic Mirror. We started our smart mirror with just a tv and dakboard but after a year we decided to do a Magic Mirror on raspberry pi. Once we had our raspberry pi and had magic mirror installed we connected it to the tv, built a pine frame, stained the frame, purchased a custom sized 2 way mirror, and assembled everything. Magic mirror isn't as user friendly as Dakboard but with a little bit of time you'll get there. Check out the links below in order to build your smart mirror.

All fun and games until you get up to pee at 3am and see a ghost in the mirror
Yeah, and notice that the ghost is the only reflection in the mirror 💀
*screams* i forgot to turn of my ghost app!
Thank you for this - you are a legend. I've seen lots of videos out there, but the way you break this down and communicate effectively was super helpful and inspired me to revisit this project.
Thank you for this video. This is probably the most in depth yet beginner friendly smart mirror video that I've seen.
thanks for the kind words and for providing feedback! cheers!
Dude this is some excellent production quality!
Thanks man! also thanks for watching and commenting. Hope you're enjoying Appo.
Couple things:
1.) If you are also looking to waterproof it (for a bathroom mirror) I would recommend the similar video on DIY Perks, and using a combination of the techniques used there and here.
2.) Love the baby, followed directly by the dog, cameos! Great vid! ^_^
A sweet project! to have built this and film it as you went along is amazing.
The best smart mirror tutorial so far!! Thanks for uploading!
Great job! I’m a techie, so I particularly enjoyed your attention to detail. Bravo and thanks!!!
Thank you, for the video. I have been washing your previous videos about Dakboard. I like this setup better!
Great DIY build. Agree on the cooling, but I think passive cooling should be sufficient, aka slots and holes.
Really dig the Fireboard t-shirt. Great idea for a giveaway 😉
This might be the best UA-cam video I ever saw. Step by step. I have a Raspberry Pi 3 currently sitting around unused. The two way glass is kind of pricey though.
You've got some pretty good skills there, mister. Congrats and nicely done, sir! 👍👍
Thanks for the kind words!
2-3yrs back i started making one but left half completed as i was having problems with GA.. will resume making it again... It was when rpi3b came out.. still got all hardware. Thanks for your video..
This is the best video I've seen on this, good job!
Excellent job. Thanks!
I was thinking of this and wanted to see if someone had this up. Well I'm impressed.
Wow , amazing . Your video is informative nd well described. I love the way your family work together (aww....baby is so cute ❤️ ). Thank you so much for such wonderful video. Keep going Sir.
This is so cool!
Man you are brave to try it with such a huge TV.
Iv got 3 Raspberry Pi’s I love them and I’m totally doing this thanks for the idea man
Awesome 👍 thanks for sharing!
Very impresive ! Hope its work good and dont overheat and glass from inside stay clean
Beautiful !!
This is completely awesome and I'm definitely going to make one.
My brain : no we're not.
Very well done. Good job
Great video for beginners. But I figured I would mention that "cd" in the terminal stands for "change directory" and not command. Thought it would help others.
Thanks for the knowledge.
I was sooo into the video and at minute 9 I had a mini stroke. You got me good man! Keep up the good work!
Thanks for the kind words and taking the time to comment!
Very cool, here take my money!
Awesome idea and innovation. I really would like to have a mirror like this, off course at a cheaper price.
Right on! Nice vid
That's really neat
You are a legend. Subbed
Thank you very much , its really helpful tutorial ❤❤
This video has really helped me. Thank you so much
I'm so glad! Thanks for watching and commenting
super helpful!
Great project and good explanation. Congratulations 👏
Very well explained.
Thanks for the kind words!
Great video and great walkthrough. I see your family is growing, fantastic mate.
thanks for the kinds words! And yes it is, we're 10 weeks into this baby thing. Holding our heads above water haha
Project came out great. Love that its a family project! The only issue I have is the location. You can no longer fully open that cabinet without hitting the mirror. I guess just don't keep anything used often in there. My kids would nail that in a week. Yours is still tiny so nothing to worry about for a few years. Once they hit 3 all bets are off ;)
You are right and I am careful but I’ve got 3 years to figure out a solution 😂
@@BreakItYourself 2 years to go, any closer to finding a solution?
Cool project
I’ve wanted to do this for a long time
Excelente trabajo, lo estoy haciendo al pie de la letra. El mejor video hasta el momento
very cool
I wasn't expecting any comedy in this video but the safety squints had me laughing
8'54"... 😂😂😂 Nice job 👍by the way. Greetings from Venezuela 🇻🇪🇩🇪
Thank you so much.
I think, a smart mirror would be even better as a touchscreen^^
But this is great as well.
Stumbled on your video, really solid advice. You prob don't get this one much but I can handle the Rasberry Pi but not so much the carpentry aspect. LOL I bought a Kreg jig and it's still sitting in the box staring at me wanting to be used!
Excelente!!! Ganhou um inscrito
I made a vent slot in both the top and bottom panels to ensure the airflow would be enough to keep the electronics from toasting during use
2:15 PRIVAVY PROTECTION ... seems legit LOL
😂😂😂😂😂😂 I just saw this. Amazing. Definitely legit
This is an awesome DIY, I I've been thinking making an alarm clock that serves as a lamp, with wireless charging and Google Assistant, basically everything I have in my night stand, maybe would be a good ideia for a next viseo
Ah man, I just stumbled across Magic Mirror today and thought it would be rock hard to do. Your video has made it seem really simple, thanks a million for that! Does it just continually cycle until you turn it off? Thanks a million for this vid!
Thank you 🙏
Hello, very nice video, thank's a lot for your explanations i've needed to undersand for module, now that's right...
phil
"The first thing you're going to need is a Raspberry Pi."
2022 hangs its head in sadness.
Ahhh, The great RPi shostage and price gouging. Try getting your hands on a Orange Pi or Banana Pi instead.
cd stands for change directory and you can use ctl+alt+c and v to copy and paste in terminal
Nice work
Love the video, great work! It would be great if you could next time screenrecord your work with the OS as the camera recording isn't as detailed as the screenrecording would be.
love it
You did such an awesome job! Question tho, how do I turn it on and off manually?
Badass !!
Great.
The future is real!) 👍
I love this! I want to build something similar, but as a floor to ceiling mirror. Please help.
u can use an old laptop display if u get a driver board some even support touch
Very inpressed
What a counterintuitive idea. You have mirrors to see reflections. People try to keep this as clear as possible. You have screens to display information and people have spent so much money to reduce glare and reflection.
Really really good Video!!!!
Thanks for the kind words!
Can you also add a television tuner/cable to view through the mirror? Or does the picture not show up well? Thanks, great video!
Nice
Excellent Video. I have a question though, can i also have the regular TV working if the magic mirror is turned off.
Excellent explanation and information. Quick question, though: No API needed in this project?
Very cool! Can you freely control the layout of the modules onscreen? Add spacing, margin or padding between them/against the frame?
I know for sure that you can adjust the layout with regards to the frame but between modules themselves might be harder and is outside of my knowledge. I'm sure it's possible I just don't know how. You can change margin with the overall raspberry pi OS in the display settings.
We need these mate why there is no popular smart mirror
Would be cool to use this on one of those Linux photo frames, such as the O2 Joggler
Any issues with image burn in?
Great video. Thanks for producing it!
dont use a oled!
Looks like a great project
God help ya if the TV goes on you though
"Magic Mirror, tell me today, did all my friends have fun at play?"
Yes, I grew up with Romper Room in the '60s. I was a "Do Bee", not a "Don't Bee".... ;-P
I see too many visibility and reflection issues for me to even attempt this. I'd just mount the screen on the wall without the mirroring, but, I'm not your wife... ;-)
Great job! How do you get it to the actual tv frame?
I would just buy the Canakit Raspberry Pi package instead of the individual parts. They are over all cheaper, and you get all the necessary cables and even the RPi cases (some of which include a fan because the RPi does get hot with prolonged use.) They do include some other goodies for future projects. Just my opinion.
love the idea but what i dont understand is why you stained the wood so that it doesnt fit with the rest of the decor ? why didnt you uncase the tv as you had the wood surround for hanging so as to make it thinner ?
OK here's an idea. Adding a module to see you ring doorbell live footage. Also touch screen.
I’ve wanted the same thing. If I ever get the time I want to try
Being Off-Grid I'd like something like this which shows the current start of charge and such.
Hi, great and very helpfull video!!! Thx for that. But i m really a noob to install module. I try to install moon phse module but it doesn t work. Can you make a video to explain the installation please? Thx a lot. Regards
Me seeing this video: “hmm”
*clicks*
*see’s drilling*
*goes off video* “NOPE.”
what we have here folks is a classic case of ergalilektriphobia
It is more about the sound that video behind with. My TV was on a bit higher volume, and your video just didn't start with a "nice tone". Just a to for next time, otherwise a good video same project :)
Thank you for explaining the modules I got that pretty good but I’m having so much trouble, and I mean so much, on trying to auto start the actual magic mirror when I turn the pi on. I’ve been trying to figure it out for multiple days and nothing I do works. If you see this comment can you please give some advise or what you did with your mirror? Thank you.
Question:
Ia it possible if I want the mirror to be a touchscreen?
Let say I am using a touchscreen monitor.
Thanks for the mindblowing invention.
flat sceen tv-s required some ventilation?
You should align the bottom of the screen with the cabinets.
Just finished ours, using smart mirror glass, its in a room with a lot of natural light and im finding it hard to see, especially during sunny days the screen is just washed out. at night its perfect.
It's really an awesome idea to convert a PC into smart mirror. No one can recognize it easily...
absolutely beautiful project. im gonna build this and my wife gonna love this
How did it go??
@@bfryxomeg7681 his wife was cheating on him
@@bfryxomeg7681 His wifes boyfriend loves the new mirror
So I’m following the guidelines of code to put in but when I get to “npm install” within the ~/magicmirror I keep getting errors saying “npm warning npm does not support Node.js v10.23.1” saying I should get a newer version
However, when I run the curl node line it says im already running the newest version of node
Do I have to run a previous version Bc it’s not supported? I can’t seem to find a fix
Instructions unclear, bought wrong raspberry pie, now I need a gym mirror...
Absolutely don't need to use Etcher to install the image onto the SD card. Just use the Raspberry Pi installer.
Excellent information. Have you considered doing an update with latest versions of Raspberry OS and various Modules? I’m a Mac-person though, until 10 years ago I was well-versed in all the OSs and command line formats. Can Siri yet be used? I like to keep my info private.
Jesus, I jumped when the video started.
😂 whoops
Why do diy videos always start with screeching machine noises?
Wow, someone really needs to put a shell over this to make it easy to install and add or remove stuff. Saleable item then, especially if you can just buy it complete.
Could you please share more details about the two way mirror?
What did you ask to you local glass shop? What is the thickness, what were the options?
Nice DIY!!
I called a couple places but my options were very limited. The shops I called didn’t even have thickness options. I believe I ended up with 1/4”. I was shopping for two main things: glass and cheapest price haha I think I totally blanked on thickness when I was calling but neither shop even asked.
