83-85 Dead is my favorite! Always find myself attracted to these shows above any else, Garcias playing during this time is supernatural!! All eras are fantastic but this is special!!!!!!
I was the cameraman for this video and shot most of it along with Digital Jeff using all his gear - which was extensive back then -- large camera, battery packs, portable VCRs, PCM, etc. Merriweather was our local venue so we went for it -- dead center, probably a dozen rows back, towel over the camera, friends around to provide lookout. The funny story is that during the second set you can see Robbie Taylor spot us from backstage --- they came to get us and tried to take the tapes, but we did a quick handoff and gave them a blank. Thanks for the upgrade. The VCR masters are still around somewhere.
Thank you for smuggling the huge camera and pack in and throwing the towel over it, big success. This is THE best video on youtube of the Dead. very vintage 84, and indicative of their powerful frenzied playing then. Saw Alpine just after, 7/6 and 7/7, whoa! They killed Let It Grow then...(more cowbell/bombs whoo hoo), and got Bird Song just before Let It Grow to close out Set 1 - 7/6/1984...., over 40 minutes between two songs!
This whole summer tour was fueled by fungus and the stickiest of the icky. Garcia might have been visiting Persia a little often but the music was Fire. These were dark times. But. None of us were angels so ......
What a great venue. The lads always laid it down at Merrieweather. Watching this is a reminder of how much fun Phil had in Jack Straw. Thank you for sharing!
The dichotomy was extreme! Going to shows in the early 80's was like visiting a foreign country. The hard part was having one foot in the Dead and the other in the New Wave world to make bank.
Explosive Let It Grow! Jerry ripping while Bob lays down his crazy chords! Brent always in the thick of it and Phil! Ahh yes, Phil! Rythym Devils back when they could make shit happen! Jerry wasn't done ripping so he opened with Help-Slip. Great show!
Rarely saw Bob and Phil interact like they did on Jackstraw. Like a couple of high school kids having a blast. Sloppy version. Band sounded out of tune. Fixed it for FOTD. Great sound for an aud recording. I can hear Phil! Thanks Kevin! I just came across this one.
The devil had no hold on Jerry he was his own man ! Knew nothing about the hereafter so I told him what I knew , he loved it ! But I made him 20 minutes late to get back on stage so big Steve kicked me to the curb ! He thought I did something to Jerry but all we were doing was hugging + talking in Portland Maine in 1988 ! I never went back !
You know what, we need some kind of recovery board machine technology or mixer to fix this- to make up for when Healy thought he'd play god and totally cancel out Weir like he did in this rooster. That shit is maddening. No wonder Weir joined bohemian grove. Poor kid. That's just stupid to drop his levels. Healy needed more faith is the invisible hands of the Grateful Dead.
You know what. Fuck that. Fuck that. You shadow box that shit Weir. That shit those sound guys did to Weir so so fucking mean and so fucking wrong by the muses. So wrong. It zapped his confidence. Changes the show. That's a serious affront to the mothers. And Healy should have remembered hem goddesses are semi wrathful. I'm telling! This show had great energy in Jack Straw, great promise in Friend. Those guys had no right to fuck with the levels and you mixers and audio people please- you have a responsibility to try to fix that where possible. Box away Bobby. Get that shit. If I wAs there it'd be a coup at the the board and I'd put Healey on suspension pending his recitation of 200,000 hail Mary's and a vow to never NEVER do it again. Now you know what Bob turns up so loud now. That shit hurts man. Healy barged in on this show and that's wrong.

Exaggerate much? A cursory look at the recordings of 7/6/84 on the Live Music Archive show that the two songs total twenty-six minutes.
you did a damn fine job, sir! and thank you
Ok, I'll take a thirteen minute bird song and let it grow.
God they were hot here ! What a show ! I love this ! Thank u Mr. Tobin !
Thank you! It's kinda surreal to see shows you were at 33 years later. So kind to upload

This was the first of the lot. Thanks for the upgrade,, brother!
When you consider how New Wavey everything was in 1984, a Dead show had to have been an extra surreal experience
goodwi11 it was
The dichotomy was extreme! Going to shows in the early 80's was like visiting a foreign country. The hard part was having one foot in the Dead and the other in the New Wave world to make bank.
83/84/85 Dead
The band was high
But the music was higher
So grateful
Seriously good

Great moment in Jack Straw at 3:09 between Bob and Jerry.
Philly can play that bass like lead guitar ! ❤️🐰🐇🌹👽🪐🛸🎹🎼👻🥳love Jerry even knowing about his addiction but also had dietbeties !
What a gem from Brokedown House Productions. So amazing to see the vid and hear the show so many years after being there.
