What a great tribute to Dave Prowse, giving him some much deserved vindication since the original lines in the un-dubbed tapes were made public - it's a bit of a raw deal since they always planned on dubbing the voice and he had to shout to be heard through the helmet. He's a fine actor and that came through in the body language of the performance. Well done.
It's hard to to consider today without immense bias, as we all have a very fixed idea of what Darth Vader sounds like now. James Earl Jones as Vader has become so iconic, and David Prowse simply sounded different to what we know and love, but based on this I think he could have done a perfectly good job of voicing Vader.
I really love the documentary, "The Force's Mouth". Once, a long time ago, I actually met Dave Prowse at a public appearance in Houston, Texas in 1978. I was 12 years old, and of course a big fan of science fiction, and definitely Star Wars. I remember him standing in the hallway, and I asked him if I could take his picture with my camera, he agreed. I had this Vivitar camera. It was the kind you just point and shoot with the flash button you just slide over when you need it. Well, when I snapped the photo, my flash didn't go off, and I was so crushed at the time. I remember Dave Prowse saying, "AWWWWWW", as if he was apologetic and disappointed for me at the same time. I was so nervous, because I am standing in front of Dave Prowse, and my flash failed to go off. Being that I was so young at the time, I was so upset, that I couldn't utter another word. Looking back, it seems like a funny kind of story, but I never forgot that experience. I just wanted to share that memory with whoever is interested.
could have been worse Mate! as a photographer for over 52 years its happened to me too! years ago My dad gave me an old Ensign selfix bellows camera and i flicked the pop up viewfinder, would it on 4 turns pressed the shutter and the bellows were still in the case.. My Dad knotted himself well son thats the first mistake he said! I was 8 years old! I'm now 60 and still get the horrors I had a Nikon D3XS DSLR and i used it for a wedding The camera developed a last minute fault which i did not know about. the photos did not turn out (AAARRGGGHHH) and luckily for me there was another photographer there that day! My son in law still found out though the other photographer could not keep her big mouth shut!! so it goes to show you were not alone at least Dave Prowse did not laugh at you.
This is quite a testament to James Earl Jones and his remarkable natural voice. Nearly forty years, plus several layers of sound processing, almost give David Prowse the richness of Jones's performance.
It isn't Jones natural voice either - although Jones is a great actor and nailed th emotion first time. Certainly did on the one time I worked with him on a TV commercial years ago!
How did this not go viral?!?!?!? As a Star Wars fan & sound engineer this hits all the high notes! Props to Prowse, he IS & always will be Darth Vader!!!
I guess we know Darth Vader's voice from the fact that James Earl Jones created it, but it's great to be shown that technology allows that to be recreated. I hope Dave Prowse felt justified that his voice could make a great Darth Vader, albeit involving quite a bit of audio processing!
+dextrovix the only technology used was Vocal align to show modern lip sync advances as used in film today, and Chorus effect to give Vader, as used back in the day.
+devfirechannel Fair enough, having thought some more about it, it does show that a separate read through by Dave Prowse would have meant the end result would have been very similar. Good stuff.
+dextrovix I think I heard somewhere that in the first release of the movie, he thought he was doing the voice, but his voice sounded too muffled and high pitched to fit Darth Vader... So now he knows that James Earl Jones is the voice by Empire Strikes Back, but in the fight on Cloud City, they brought in another person to fight in the lightsaber duel. I heard that this constant changing of his role made him really bitter with George Lucas, and actually read that during filming, he would say completely different joke lines and the actors would have to act like he's saying the real lines. Also I hear that he was being too "annoying" to the director and was banned from all Lucasfilm related events after that... Poor guy :/
david prowse and another stunt double who was a sword master were used for vader, any fight scenes involve the other actor and everything else is prowse. and during the second and 3rd movies prowse while on set would fuck up lines on purpose and said things that were liable to have people break character or entice them to fuck up their own lines, lucas allowed people to change lines as long as they were serious. however saying hemorrhoids do not concern me i need a shit, is a pretty easy way to make the director hate you and want to fuck you over. if he did indeed leak plot details, which apprently there is a magazine interview from the 70's that proves he did, then he got what he deserved, and simply for fucking up lines on purpose he deserved to have lucas go back on his word of letting prowse reveal his face in the movie. also the muffled voice thing is true, they decided to dud it over due to barely being able to hear vader and his voice not sounding evil enough. however im sure had he taken everything seriously, despite not being the voice, that he probably wouldve been allowed to have his face in the movie.
David Prowse's contribution to the development and eventual importance of Darth Vader in the Star Wars films is just as important as any other actor's contribution.
If they ever do a Star Wars story and Vader has some lines and they're unable to get James Earl Jones, then I'd definitly love to hear David Prowse as a replacement. It would be nice to have one story where he is done by the actor who also physically portrayed him.
David is such a legend, I grew up with his road safety campaign. I've always felt it was unfair that people have assumed he couldn't do the role because of his accent, he's an actor. Lots of actors have very different accents to the ones we hear when they're playing a role. Congratulations on righting a wrong & giving a fascinating glimpse into this amazing technology.
I could too, and maybe you could have and your neighbor but that's not what makes something special. Vaders voice was special due to Jones naturally powerful voice. These effects are part of whats wrong with modern music and movies. Using practical effects and forcing people to actually sing makes a special product.
The issue is David Prowse in 1977 didn't sound like 2015 David Prowse. Watch the B-Roll footage from _A New Hope_. It would have required far too much work to modulate his voice.
@@BigJwlz True. In 1977 the voice Dave gave Vader was not deep...no where near James Earl Jones. After James Earl Jones gave Vader that deep menacing voice, Dave has something to work with and compare too. He is basically imitating James Earl Jones vocals. Unfortunately, Dave had his chance on set back in 1977 to give Vader a menacing voice, but it wasn't sufficient. So in came James Earl Jones and he nailed it perfectly.
Incredibly deep and rich voice! This proves without any doubt that Dave's voice would've been incredibly good for Darth Vader! Thanks for this great treat!
10:24 Wow! That's amazing. David Prowse really sounds like James Earl Jones with the voice effects. Disney should get David Prowse to do voice work on Episode 9 as a cyborg and give him the opportunity to do what he never got to do in the films.
Thia is indeed a fine tribute to Mr Prowse. What a beautiful voice he has. I'm glad to know that he might well have done the voiceover, were it not for the scheduling and expense matters. I have always enjoyed Mr Jones's work in the trilogy, and now I can consider the richness that another (a different) fine voice might have added to those wonderful experiences. Thank you to everyone who had a hand (or a voice) in creating this.
That is awesome. With the greatest respect to James Earl Jones and no offence meant to him, I'd love a future Star Wars Blu-Ray to have an option to change to Dave's studio dub. Growing up I always wanted to be able to meet the stars and hear them recite dialogue, so I always felt a disservice to Dave's performance by wanting to hear James Earl Jones, because he was the voice.
I have to say, I'm incredibly impressed by the audio work here - specifically the way you finished the audio; I couldn't believe I was hearing such quality out of my macbook pro speakers. It was really, really, amazing. I wish I could hear every video on youtube with this outstanding of audio! Cool piece, too, but man, that blew me away.
Thanks so much for giving Dave this. It's so easy to see Star Wars outtakes and listen to the on set West Country accent, but I now appreciate Dave better and can see that it's easy to jump to conclusions. Great video!
absolutely awesome love it thankyou so much ,really appreciate all your had work putting this together fantastic to finally hear the true voice of darth vader
I'm sure it could be recorded but not assembled. This should certainly be made done as Dave still lives, even if it means staying archived for 70 years until something can be made out of it, at least it would exist. I mean it well, this was pretty delightful to hear, it's only that it leaves us wanting more.
They did and they didn't. The lines are rewritten from the movie to be about sound editing. For example, instead of "I have you now," it's "We have it now."
They should really bring him back in one way or another, I hate that he doesn't get as much attention as James Earl Jones because he is just as important as him in Star Wars
Holy crap! Why am I only hearing about this now?! And I only read about it in Prowes' wiki entry! I love how the creator picked the most perfectly appropriate lines of dialog, ever so slightly skirting the limits of copywriting! I had always read that Prowes _did_ loop his dialog in a booth but Lucas chose not to use it..
Killer to see real studios using Fruity Loops (FL Studio) these days. I'm a lifetime license holder since v1. Best sequencer ever created. I stand by that statement.
In my VERY humble opinion this would've been perfect if it had just a LITTLE less chorus in the end result, otherwise it's perfect and I think that dave prowse could've pulled it off if they'd let him.
Really interesting documentary and great that your studios were able to give Dave Prowse an opportunity to know what his voice could have been like if he had had a chance to use the over-dubbing technology available today and to be the actual voice of Darth Vader. Seeing how you used different effects to re-create a more Darth Vader-esque voice is interesting. I do agree with the comments below, however I guess that the way that film production worked in the USA at the time when Star Wars was flimed - that it was simpler in economic terms for the Darth Vader character to be a conglomerate of different actors to get the best characterisation for the role. As is mentioned below, Dave didn't have the same depth of voice as James Earl Jones when he was younger, even if he may have a deeper voice from age now. Likewise, the fight scenes were also filmed with a stunt actor, trained in sword-fighting, with another actor still used when the helmet came off who looked more similar to the Luke Skywalker character in turn. I guess also making the film using actual film rather than digitally as they do today would have meant that the costs involved would have been much more. If the filming of the original Star Wars with Dave Prowse had been made today I guess they could have done a lot more with the training and effects that go into film production of the modern age. Well done for giving Dave a chance to try out a Darth Vader voice that's what counts most of all.
Erm... even without editting, he already sounds like Darth Vader. Actually, his natural voice is closer to the original Darth Vader voice than after editting it.
Thanks guys to bring Dave's voice back to Vader's with this nowadays technology. Brilliant! Hope he fells honored by doing this. He's a great actor and for real... He is the best! Now we have the digital enviroment to do such things as post effects and so on. I think George Lucas just looks at his small budget to make the Star Wars for real at its time. Nobody believes in him... and he did it... no doubt. I understand Dave but also i understand George to put out his voice in the star wars movies... $$$ Sad but true... Dave is my hero and also the sith lord in my opinion :) No matter which voice, he is the Dark Lord! Did u heard other versions of the movies especially in german? It made me goose pickels ... but not only from his voice... its the actor and character, so... please send him greets from a fan at the outer rim... He's my lord in which "voice" he ever speaks :) Greets from germany
Nice one Jayce. David is a local Croydonian and he would visit our school (Ashburton) frequently, he is a true gent and a lovely man. Looking forward to seeing you Jayce at the Numan concert at the o2 Brixton Academy!
honestly, I think that you tried to make Dave's voice to be similar to James, I personally admire both actors and I'm a true fan of recording processes (I'm an amateur musician) and I find really interesting the way you did it, bur I insist, it seems to me like you tried to make Dave sound like James
+draculero appreciate your comments, but disagree with you on trying to make Dave sound like James, the remit for Darth's voice (in the script) was to have an aggressive voice, like the emperor, it was later changed for it to be deep and brooding, this was before James was even a mere thought to fit the role, so... we got Dave (who is a bass/Baritone) to speak as the script originally asked.
We were robbed! I prefer the tembre of your voice, Dave. And I was also impressed with the success of your road safety campaign that's briefly mentioned.
yes. Dave Prowse should have a copy of starwars edited to its original debut with the original soundboard. Then you guys can record the films audio of dave prowse add some effex then re edit the film with a young Dave Prowse accent. im devided but Prowse's accent does give it that extra "it"!
I like David Prowse for the way he made Darth Vader look and move! Such a turn on!!! And I like James Earl Jones for the way Vader talks ! They both made Vader sexy!!!
I feel bad for Dave. Regardless of the politics of the production of the movie, he will never be as remembered as James Earl Jones even though he was a crucial part of creating Darth Vader. Just because someone's wearing a mask doesn't mean they aren't still part of a production.
The only technology used for Dave was Vocal Align, which didn't exist years ago, and is used in every movie today, it wouldn't have been needed back then either as you couldn't see Darth Vaders mouth so, no lip sync requirements needed, the only advantage here is that we see Dave Prowse speaking, and Vocal Align is used to align his studio voice with his on set mouth movement. other than that... Both Prowse and JEJ had the same Darth effect put on them to create that Darth effect.
Brilliant, absolutely brilliant. What an amazing voice. He is just as good as James earl jones Vader voice and would have been so much better if Lucas film had used Davids voice, such a talented chap.
So many urban legends and fan theories as to why Prowse 's voice was never used, most of which are fabricated, half right or just plain incorrect. Fact is Lucas wanted a particular sounding voice for Darth Vader and he chose James Earl Jones, whose voice is of a particular timbre that Prowse couldn't match. Whether Prowse or anyone else thinks otherwise is irrelevant and nothing will change that.
Spot on. Did you know that David got upset and still is because George chose Sebastian to play the unmasked Vader? It's the same as the voice, George wanted a particular look for Anakin, and its fair enough.
well done! showing respect to David Prowse! George Lucas need some of this feeling to his actors, no director would do the same thing nowadays, thought I respec James Earl work.
I mean to me sure you could of had some other big guy wearing darth Vader suit but he played the role perfectly especially just how imposing and solemn he looks in some scenes like cloud city duel epecially the throne room duel in return.
He sounds alot like Paarthurnax from Skyrim, who of course is played by Charles Marntinet (Mario/Wario/pmuch all of the characters) without even having to edit anything, probably more so than Charles himself without edits.
Go ahead and set up a Red® camera and position him in the same position as Sebastian Shaw was in Vader's unmasking scene. He can be rotoscoped into the scene. In your timeline, have the original rotj scene queued up and at 30% opacity and placed in the layer above the live feed from your camera. Try to match Shaw's movements as best as you can. Do some takes with and without the mask just in case rotoscoping his face into the old footage looks better. This is such a short scene that this is actually very plausible to accomplish and will place your name in the history books and put Dave's image into the film where it rightfully belongs. Lastly, hire me to assist you, I'm cheap and I live in LA.
Does anyone think they redo the whole Darth dialogue for New Hope? But not released it yet due to copyright. Seems like for a few lines they showed that they did more.
Just read the news about David. I'm glad you guys were able to do this with him while he was with us. I'm sure it meant a lot to him.
RIP David Prowse

I think George Lucas just looks at his small budget to make the Star Wars for real at its time. Nobody believes in him... and he did it... no doubt.
I understand Dave but also i understand George to put out his voice in the star wars movies... $$$
Sad but true... Dave is my hero and also the sith lord in my opinion :)
No matter which voice, he is the Dark Lord!
Did u heard other versions of the movies especially in german?
It made me goose pickels ... but not only from his voice... its the actor and character, so...
please send him greets from a fan at the outer rim...
He's my lord in which "voice" he ever speaks :)
Greets from germany
Very cool and impressive, thank you for this moment !!
They should have had him read some of the lines of dialogue from the Star Wars films and then dubbed that over the film footage.
I thought it was really interesting, the voice sounded quite internally angry and bitter with a hint of the electronic for the mask. well done!
+draculero appreciate your comments, but disagree with you on trying to make Dave sound like James, the remit for Darth's voice (in the script) was to have an aggressive voice, like the emperor, it was later changed for it to be deep and brooding, this was before James was even a mere thought to fit the role, so... we got Dave (who is a bass/Baritone) to speak as the script originally asked.
that is sooooo cool
We were robbed! I prefer the tembre of your voice, Dave. And I was also impressed with the success of your road safety campaign that's briefly mentioned.
Great job, sounded awesome
*More like emperor Palpatine without the high edit but other than that he would be great on the next battlefront*
Amazing.
I feel bad for Dave. Regardless of the politics of the production of the movie, he will never be as remembered as James Earl Jones even though he was a crucial part of creating Darth Vader. Just because someone's wearing a mask doesn't mean they aren't still part of a production.
Great Job my friend!!!
RIP David Prowse
But JEJ's didn't need all that technology, isn't that the point considering we are talking about the 1970's, he had the voice required naturally...
Correct, but the point that Steven is making is that Jones already carried the voice George wanted, without much of any tech required for it.
what does jej mean?
a single white female James earl jones
@@devfirechannel4675 but they did also use vocal effects on James Earl Jones voice back when making the original trilogy!
Fascinating. This is what an alternate reality would've sounded like. My daughter was fascinated by the software.
Amazing
James Earl Jones is the Voice of Darth Vader!!!
Rip David Prouse!
Awesome!!
God damn, the rock in the beginning just overpowers the voice way too much.
Pretty awesome!
R.I.P Dave!
Brilliant, absolutely brilliant. What an amazing voice. He is just as good as James earl jones Vader voice and would have been so much better if Lucas film had used Davids voice, such a talented chap.
I have his autograph on a picture as vader that hangs over my bed
Rest In Peace
Very interesting
I mean to me sure you could of had some other big guy wearing darth Vader suit but he played the role perfectly especially just how imposing and solemn he looks in some scenes like cloud city duel epecially the throne room duel in return.
Great voice yet
Sebastian Shaw and James Earl Jones may have made Darth Vader memorable, but David Prowse will always be the main man who brought Vader to life
Pfft, James Earl Jones did. But to be fair, they all did. in some form. This video is only putting David on a pedestal.
