“Shaddap You Face” was a modest success here in America, peaking at No. 53 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. I even own the American 45 pressing on MCA Records.
Me too! What surprises many people is that they do so well - even in the 70s they did well: "Ernie, The Fastest Milkman In The West" (Benny Hill), "Grandad" (Clive Dunn), "If" (Telly Savalas), "D.I.V.O.R.C.E." (Billy Connolly), "Combine Harvester" (The Wurzels) all got to No 1; "Funky Gibbon" (The Goodies) got to No 4; "Funky Moped" (Jasper Carrott) got to No 5; "Disco Duck (Rick Dees and his Cast of Idiots) got to No 6; "The Ying Tong Song" (The Goons) got to No 9 when it was re-issued in 1973. Novelty songs continued to be popular into the 1990s, with songs for Mr Blobby, Red Nex ("Cotton Eyed Joe") and Los Del Rio ("Macarena") all going Top 2!
What is wrong with these novelty songs, that grandma song is sweet, and I remember us singing that Orville song in school. Where was Clive Dunn's Granddad song?
...Lot of miserable, minorly famous, contributors in this clip. It was a time when music was fun and for everyone to try their hand at before the days of manufactured X Factor/The Voice type of artists, streaming, downloads, same artist having a complete album occupying the bulk of the Top 10, instantly forgettable songs we now are subjected to!
Agadoo and Shaddup You Face ARE good songs, and I don't care how much hate or abuse I get for saying so. Aside from the Birdie Song I haven't heard of the others.
Oh! Cringe! Yep, I bought Grandad by Clive Dunn, and Ernie by Benny Hill, and Disco Duck by Rick Dees and The Smurf Song by Father Abraham... oh, no, sorry, that was the 1970s.
I wonder if the famous people saying horrible things about these fantastic songs were told to say them by the producer(s)/director of the programme........ I would not be at all surprised if they all owned a copy of more than one of them! The reason why they are all so well received and bought is because they are fun and different. They are not 'yet another song' by an artist and because they are fun and different and that fun and different is something we all want in our collection. It would be great if a record company could do compilation albums of novelty songs. There could be a series of them like the Now That's What I Call Music series! I would love to own brilliant songs such as 'Shaddap You Face' and 'I'm Only A Poor Little Birdie' again!
There's a fine line between cute and puke inducing. Keith Harris didn't just cross that line, he pole vaulted over it. I'm a vegetarian but I would have happily roasted that duck.
I still do my orvil the duck impression and sing this song at my kids they hate it 😂😂
As you can see people we had a sense of humor back then .... fuckin great days RIP
AIDS, the cld war and early 80s recession/ No thanks.
I didnt know Ben Dover was a ventriloquist

Oh yeah I have painful memories of those pants "dance" songs of the late 70's/early to mid 80's, birdy song, Agadoo...
John Lennon robbed of a Christmas No 1 thanks to St Winifred School it should have been John Lennon
Nah, it should have been Jona Lewie. They've since apologised to him for that.

In the 1970s.
That was the 1970's, 1971 to be exact.
