I laughed when you said you couldn't keep plants alive, because me either. I'm definitely going to move some of my fake plants to the floor of my tank now. Thanks for this and loved this video! 😊
Glad I found this video. New skink owners and I was starting to get concerned that our bluey was staying in her hide too much and not getting the light. I see that I was wrong to worry, and she can bask as desired. Thank you!!
Excellent video! Extremely informative and very kind as well. I do not own a blue-tongued skink, but I may at some point in the future. If that time comes, I will definitely be referring to this video again. Thank you!
Hi there, greetings from germany! (sorry for my english...) Your videos have helped me and my new Skink. He is very shy and skittish. Your tips with shielding him up against his new environment ( my livingroom) and get him hay for secureness made him brave enough to dig around in hie enclosure. So thank you very much! I feel better when my little ones happy :) Your great!
Doesn’t get better than your channel, man! I love everything about it haha what a great setting and the way you present your work is perfect and fun! So informative! You have a playlist of your videos? Shoot, man, I have a playlist of your videos lol! Your sponsor has some NICE cages available! Will definitely check them out in more detail! Your kit is such a nice resource and you’re really good at taking photos for thumbnails and especially if you actually took the photos that are on your wall! I’ve followed your advice and am happy to say that I am now a Blue Tongue Skink owner! LOL I also went with fake plants at the moment
Wow. All this info is super helpful! I’m looking into get a blue tongue skink, I have been doing a lot of research and I wanted to know whether a female or male would be better or what the differences are between the genders.
Awesome video! I was super curious why people had so many fake plants higher up when skinks arent really arboreal this made alot of sense. And its less intimidating for a future skink owner. Enjoying your videos alot
Great video as always. My million $ question is, so in your experience, a blue tongue skink can thrive just as well in a 40 gallon tank, as a 55 gallon tank? You don't notice any extra stress, or anything as a result? As you said, there are many opinions, and some people will crap all over you and call you terrible things if using a 40 gallon. I have an exo terra 40 gallon that is 36x18x12. Was thinking of getting a northern blue tongue, but want to make sure this truly is a decent size. In a year or so I could upgrade to the Thrive eco PVC tank that is 46x18x18.
Hello. I am from the place where these reptiles are from, which is one of the reasons we are choosing them. We are first timers setting up. I am wondering if because they are in their natural environment, how much heat is necessary? Also, what sort of temperature do you aim for, for brumation and what times of the year (QLD, Aus). Thank you kindly
I just found your channel and am absolutely in love with the scientific approach. I want to upgrade my skink as I'm upgrading one of my other critters. My northern would be going from a 36×18×18 glass enclosure to a 48×24×12 pvc enclosure (keeping humidity in a glass enclosure has been difficult). So the question(s) I have are, is 12" too short for a blue tongue? Ive heard "under 18" is best because of back kinks, but I watched your basics video where you had mentioned a 24" high. I'd be using a radient heat pannel inside the cage, and I was worried about my skink moving hides and possibly knocking around the UVB if its fixated inside the tank aswell, are there any issues with that I should be aware of? Thanks for your time!
My little buddy is in a 39"x18.5"x19" Problem is... my "little buddy" is now a monstrously large indo Blue tongue skink. Hes about 27" long. I think hes due for a upgrade in the near future, I'm thinking 60x24x24 Is current tank uses a 8x18 undertank heater with thermostat on the warm side. A LED light panel + UVB fixture combo that's 24" long for good lighting and UVB/UVA. I found my skink does NOT bask. He just wont do it. However he does love his Heat rock. (I've tried floodlights and other solar heat lamps... he wont do it) And the to warm the general airspace now, a 60w Ceramic heater
thanks for this! I'm going shopping soon to start getting my tank ready long before the spring reptile expo in my area (where I plan to get my skink) I have a question, though. I'll only have a 40 G and I'm wondering what kind of precautions I'll need to take with a baby, should that be what I end up with. I'm gathering info from all over and would love your input! (this is the first of your videos I've watched and will be looking at that playlist, for sure!)
2 months ago, I bought my first skink. I followed alot of the information you gave to us in your videos. I worked hard to get my temperatures perfect, bought a solar meter, etc, etc. This video is ON POINT. it's a very very good recap of all the information needed, with links to your different videos.
Yeah I wish I could easily size up mine was an adult when I got him four years or five ago and over th years watching such a big lizard in that small tank has been sad
Yeah even for a 16-18in lizard it’s still too small. I have a 17in eastern and he does better in a 4ft viv. I also have a baby in a 3ft tank but he’s getting the same size viv after upgrading my massive 22in boy in a 4x2x2ft viv.
Doing research before I start this adventure. I’ve found your videos very helpful. Question: I’m in central Florida and I plan on my setup being on an enclosed porch. No heat, AC available but rarely used and no direct sunlight. Any concerns about natural humidity levels? Do I need 2 heat sources?
does anyone know what's the exact PAR38 halogen floodlight that he uses? I'm having trouble finding one that is exactly 85w on amazon or on his kit... or can it have a range listed that includes 85w? I just want to make sure that I get the right one for my new skink!
I'm having the same problem. You comment is from a year ago, but I assume that if you're able to dim an 85 to the desired intensity, you should be able to do the same with a 90w or 75w bulb -- the key is to get a dimmer. Hope this helps.
I needed some advice I put hydro balls as a drainage layer and my blue tongue burrowed to the bottom and I've found acouple hydro balls in his poop idk if he's OK or if I should take them.out or what
You are the go to for everything BTS. Where did you get the cork bark? I live in NYC and can’t find one big enough for Wallace anywhere. Got him in august and he was a tiny baby and now he’s well over 18 inches, he’s in great health and very happy but I want to ensure that he has a proper hide that will completely cover him
Hello! 😊 I just received my new 4ft by 2 enclosure. I see that you spoke on the par38 bulb for heating. My enclosure is also 2ft tall. Should I get a higher wattage than the 85w? If so which wattage would you recommend 120?
Your buddy who linked 2 4ft enclosures together, does he have hot and cool sides for each one? Or is one side hot and one side cool? Do you have a link to it??
Do I need a cool end hide if mine just burrows under a big water “dish”? The kind he can sort of soak in as needed that looks like a flat rock or whatever
I've been using a coco fiber/cyprus mulch mix, but I had to have my skink to the vet because he had gotten some in his eye and it became mucousy and irritated. Is there anything you can suggest to avoid that or alternate substrates that still offer high humidity?
Hello! I am moving my bluey into college with me, and I want to get a good heat light bulb and heat emitting bulb at night since my college is in the mountains and it has already snowing nearby! You mentioned a certain floodlight with a dimmer switch and then also a ceramic heat emitter, could you possibly link to amazon or any other source the specific ones you use? I am really trying to find something good and reliable, I don't want her ever getting too cold!!
I would get a halogen PAR38 100w flood light from the hardware store (NOT LED) and a 75w CHE for night time. You can get a cheap console/desktop dimmer at the hardware store too for use with the halogen light
Its possible for some individuals yes. However you’ll need to be diligent about enrichment and skilled at creating thermal zones. Most keepers prefer a 4x2x2 or larger.
The cage you had In the beginning where did you buy it and if you made it your self were did you get the supplies because I really want a blue tongue skink but all the cages are like 300$! (Btw this video was very help full)
Hi I have a Indonesian blue toung skink and theres no way to keep my cage humidity high where I live would it be fine of the humidity was at 30% but I put a big water bowl in so it can soak when it wants?
Is it okay to keep a bts in a garage? If they have constant water? And it doesn’t get hot in their, just warm. And of course it will have a heat lamp for day and night
Hey TC, im planning to get a blue tongue skink soon and im currently setting up the enclosure. I live in indonesia and my house naturally has high level of humidity (65-80%). What kind of subtrates will works best? And any tips for this enclosure of mine?
What's the max temp for northerns? I have here mix things..I have a baby right now and my temps at 90degress on hot spot and 78 in cool with water bowl temp at 75..really like your channel!!👍👍😎
So I just purchased my first blue tongued skink a few days ago and I’m worried something might be wrong with him. the first day when we brought him home he was pretty active around his enclosure and seemed to enjoy the hides that I provided and even let him explore around my room to make him comfortable with his new environment but the next day according to my sister he didn’t come out of his log the entire day I enticed him out with a blue berry to see if he was hungry and he ate some fruit and veggies(just until I can get some wet dog food) from my hand then just went back to the inside of his log and has been sleeping for very extended periods of time with little to no exploring at all and seems almost lethargic he’s in a 40 gallon tank with dual heating lamp with one ceramic bulb for night time use He occasionally sneezes from time to time. I was told hes about 8 months old and is an Indonesian bts. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated I love the little dude and want to take expert care of him!
What are the facts on the difference between plastic, wood and glass enclosures, I'm agonising over it, I've had to use all 3 and so far in terms of humidity and heat and just general decoration a plastic tub seems to do considerably better than the other 2 but I'd feel like I was being cheap to put them in plastic tubs, would manufacturing an acrylic viv be better?
PVC vivariums are optimal for indoor keeping. PVC insulates well for temps and holds humidity and is lighter in weight than wood. Wood is good for insulation and if sealed well holds humidity. It is heavy. Glass holds humidity well and is not as heavy as wood but still heavy. Glass is a poor insulator. Plastic tubs hold humidity well and insulate better than glass but not as good as other options. Check out www.reptilekages.com for the best option commercially available in the US.
@@ReptileMountainTV thank you so much, I should clarafiy that I keep geckos rather than skinks but I am looking to get one :) I'd had issues with the glass viv in terms of heat and humidity dropping too fast all the time, id put them in temporary plastic tubs and to be honest they were fantastic in terms of functionality and now I've tried a wooden viv and the humidity just never goes down, it will dip into 60 if I leave the door open but if I close it again it rockets back up the 80s. Acrylic is very expensive. I'm in England so unfortunately I cant use kages :/ but the pvc I've just looked at is much thicker and much more affordable and I have the know how to make it so ill definitely give it a go thank you again! It's good to get information from someone using facts rather than opinion bias!
Not sure why you need to but if the critter crumble you’re referring to is coconut husk then yes you can. However, Ive found that coconut products tend to mold faster than cypress or sphagnum. Keep in mind Easterns don’t need high humidity so sphagnum is not the best as its used typically for higher humidity requiring animals.
Hey man, I have a question, I just got a new BTS indo, I put him in his tank 2 hides one with the moss and that’s the humid hide, I am following your other videos instructions of covering all 4 sides of his tank so he gets used to it for a week, he’s a room with all my pets, there are 3 dogs that reside in this room, is that fine for them to share the same space once the first week is over and I remove the 4 covers? Also I haven’t seen him leave the hide all day (first day today) since I put him in the tank, any insight would be fantastic! Love your videos @reptilemountain.tv
You will have to gage your skinks response as it happens and adjust accordingly. No way to tell how he will react to the dogs. They will likely hide often if its wild caught and new. Could be shy for days, weeks, months, or years.
I don't have lighting atm..I've had my rescue baby eastern blue tongue for a week .he has a huge terrarium ..it's also the middle of summer ..unable to buy the right lights atm..what can I do to make sure he gets enough sun and UVB?
where did you get the floodlight and what brand is it? ive been looking but a lot of them are from brands ive never heard of and they dont have great reviews.
Hi! I'm researching lots of different species to find who fits me best. I'm very interested in blueys but always thought I might not have the space. I have a 40 gal, 36×18in of floor space. Is that really enough? And can i start a baby out in it or would they need something smaller to start? Thanks!
@@ReptileMountainTV thanks for the advice🤗 I just got mine 4 days ago and he's always hiding I think it's normal since his new to his enclosure and he lives in 4×2×2 feet PVC enclosure. And the basking spot is always on 89 degrees I can't adjust it but I think it's okay and the uv tube is going in 2/3 of the enclosure. And today he actually ate today I was so thankfull that he ate. I'm not trying to hold him for the first couple weeks but I'm just happy that I got a blue tongue skink and also thank you for the care guides and tips. Its nervous getting your first reptile but it's also rewarding. thank you for everything and being an inspiration for keeping blue tongue skinks🥰, I hope you have a good day and thank you❤️❤️

12” does work but taller is also an option. I have used both with UV with success
Hi, really helpful video thanks! Also does the basking area need to be flat? Would a large piece of corkbark work as a basking area?
I would say mostly flat so they can get an even heat transfer. Cork can work but a rock is better.

Very nice video. I wouldn’t want to house a 20-24 inch lizard in a 36 inch viv though. Too small

You’ll need to be certain the temps are attainable. If they aren’t then you need to adjust with artificial heat, cooling, etc.
Question is that enclosure for an adult or baby?
What size enclosure for a baby and when to upgrade l?
does anyone know what's the exact PAR38 halogen floodlight that he uses? I'm having trouble finding one that is exactly 85w on amazon or on his kit... or can it have a range listed that includes 85w? I just want to make sure that I get the right one for my new skink!

Your buddy who linked 2 4ft enclosures together, does he have hot and cool sides for each one? Or is one side hot and one side cool? Do you have a link to it??
Good question! I will ask him.
Do I need a cool end hide if mine just burrows under a big water “dish”? The kind he can sort of soak in as needed that looks like a flat rock or whatever
They need a region of space to cool off.
I always catch my skink staring at me its getting creepy but I still love him.
Lol
Do you have a link for the heat bulb? Trying to find one at stores and having a hard time
1000bulbs.com
I've been using a coco fiber/cyprus mulch mix, but I had to have my skink to the vet because he had gotten some in his eye and it became mucousy and irritated.
Is there anything you can suggest to avoid that or alternate substrates that still offer high humidity?
Natural top soil or just cypress
Strange question but how many plug sockets am I going to need? If I’m reading this right do I need 2?
I recommend getting a 4-6 socket surge protector
Do we need to use 2 hides for both size or 1 in the cool side is ok?
At least one hide but one in both temp zones is best
looking forward to the Indo video! hard to find good reliable info on those types.
I am new here and I love your video
Gratitude 🙏
I tried to use a dimmer but it wouldn’t work when it was attached to the timer. What do you use for a timer? Great video btw

Sounds like he's just adjusting to the new set up. Check out my video call Skink's First Week and the one on my Skink Won't Eat those should help.
Hey there I have an eastern bluey. Can I mix substrates like cypress bark, critters crumble and sphagnum moss???
Not sure why you need to but if the critter crumble you’re referring to is coconut husk then yes you can. However, Ive found that coconut products tend to mold faster than cypress or sphagnum. Keep in mind Easterns don’t need high humidity so sphagnum is not the best as its used typically for higher humidity requiring animals.
What size is the modified pipe 4 inch or 6 inch. Thank You
4 😁
What age will they still fit in the 4 inch ones.
So I have a ceiling fan on at night in my room would that affect my skinks tank temp at all?
You’d have to use a digital thermometer to tell
I have a Question, do Blue tongue’s need a UVB light? or can they get it through other means?
UVB it the best for the animal. Anything else is biologically inferior.
I don't have lighting atm..I've had my rescue baby eastern blue tongue for a week .he has a huge terrarium ..it's also the middle of summer ..unable to buy the right lights atm..what can I do to make sure he gets enough sun and UVB?
Give her some time outside 👍🏼
How do I buy a skink from Houston .
Hi, will a bts eat ladybugs??? Not going to be giving as food just wanting to know because I want them to eat mites that are lingering.
I doubt it.
Can I get plastic vivarium in uk
where did you get the floodlight and what brand is it? ive been looking but a lot of them are from brands ive never heard of and they dont have great reviews.
I got mine at home depot. They are Phillips brand.
thanks! :)
Hi! I'm researching lots of different species to find who fits me best. I'm very interested in blueys but always thought I might not have the space. I have a 40 gal, 36×18in of floor space. Is that really enough? And can i start a baby out in it or would they need something smaller to start? Thanks!
Hi Ashley! I have videos that answer those very questions. Check em out in my playlists. 😁👍🏼
Hi I'm planning to get a Indonesian BTS but I am wondering it is okay if I just put a uv tube only? Do I need a basking bulb or not?
You will need a basking area
@@ReptileMountainTV thanks for the advice🤗 I just got mine 4 days ago and he's always hiding I think it's normal since his new to his enclosure and he lives in 4×2×2 feet PVC enclosure. And the basking spot is always on 89 degrees I can't adjust it but I think it's okay and the uv tube is going in 2/3 of the enclosure. And today he actually ate today I was so thankfull that he ate. I'm not trying to hold him for the first couple weeks but I'm just happy that I got a blue tongue skink and also thank you for the care guides and tips. Its nervous getting your first reptile but it's also rewarding. thank you for everything and being an inspiration for keeping blue tongue skinks🥰, I hope you have a good day and thank you❤️❤️
Can we use moss for more humid setups?
Yes indeed
ReptileMountain.TV thank you for replying so quickly!
ReptileMountain.TV do you know how much your BTS babies will be in the spring?
