Guarantee Sam understands it. Dude is a master story telling lyricist disguising huge concepts and meaning behind his words. He can say so much with a simple line. This is what music is about.

My guess was that it's about how he used to have puppy love for this woman like a dog going after a flightless bird whom he loves and recognizes is in pain but can't help himself but destroy because he's a dog. Later he feels more like a disinterested cat looking at rats he'd love to chase. The rats in this case are also potential lovers, but he can't bring himself to chase them because he's let himself go and also because he now knows they are poison and will only bring him misery.
I saw him preform this live last night, it brought me to tears. God, he is incredible.

This is a masterpiece, Why we spend our life looking for someone special and once we find her, we ask ourselves? Have I found you flightless bird? Only because a flightless bird is diferent it does not means they have to be jealous and weeping because they can’t find anyone to accept them for who they are, not common wich meands special, You do not have to look everywhere, but in places were nobody else has looked before, because right there your will find your flightless bird.

When i heard this song first time, about 12 years ago, i remember that i asked teacher what ‘dog-eared’ means. The expressions in the lyrics brought me pure heart of a little boy. I sympathized with the boy in the song. I nearly knew about English expressions as now, but the feeling I felt at that time remains quite clear at this moment. I guess It is kinda pure emotion like reminiscence that brings happy memory of little kid. Sometimes I hum the melody of this song and finally I find myself searching for the live version and falling in the emotions I used to feel. It’s rainy day in Korea and now I’m listening this song again. What a long-lasting happiness.

I think it's about taking someone who loves you, for granted. Two people in a relationship of imbalance but after one of them goes and sews some wild oats, realizes they really love that one constant person (the flightless bird), that they took for granted all along.
I heard it’s a political, decline of our society type song. I wished he had used that amazingly beautiful melody for something romantic.

one reason people get irritated by it is because a lot of people wouldn't like it if they had not have heard it from twilight (same for other songs from other movies or whatever) . I love all kinds of different music and don't really care as long as the artists and great songs are getting some love.
