Saturn is my most favorite movement of The Planets. It's powerful, yet not bombastic as others, yet also underappreciated. It truly is one of the most beautiful movements of the entire suite.
This an unforgettable musical masterpiece! It was Holsts favourite. No one could have written this but Gustav Holst. It doesn't sound like anyone else. It's brilliant.
And just before it too with the harp interlude! I've always considered the harps to be the moment when you "see" the gates, and when the woodwinds kick in its when you start moving towards them
Regardless whether it was based on astrology or astronomy, what I take away from this magnificent masterpiece is the way it touches my emotions. A space drifter pulled into the gravity trap of the Solar system. As his ship approaches the Lord of the Rings, he can't help but become in awe at the planet's mysterious look that strikes fear in his heart. After having explored the planet long enough, he decides it's time for him to leave. As he exerts his ship's impulse to depart, he feels overwhelmed. His impression has been altered. He approached in fear, but departs with appreciation of this celestial body's beauty and awesomeness.
Tori nator your description reminds me of 2001 a space odyssey. Just rewatched it for the 50th anniversary of the moon landing. It’s a great pairing with The Planets!
Holst was also a gifted astrologer. He even captured the seriousness of the first and second Saturn returns. And the calm after the storm of enduring Lord Karma's lessons.
Hey I'm 69 years old...,a lot of people my age or younger have passed away in their sleep..., or are stricken suddenly! I was 25yrs old once, "hip" and looking forward to what life brings. A quote from Charles Dicken's "A Christmas Carole" is very relevant...,"there is never enough time to do all the things we wish..., and then suddenly, you're not there anymore!"
How would that be different from a bassoon? Forgive my ignorance. Edit: I looked it up and I see that it is an octave higher than bassoon, filling a gap in the double reed family. Very cool. As a euphonium (tenor tuba) player I feel sympathy for the other middle pitch instruments that are so often forgotten.
That part straight to the end of the movement is my favorite section of the entire suite and has been since I discovered this music in 2004. The Simon Rattle version with the City of Birmingham Orchestra executes the beauty of this section the best I think.
Lord Saturn, You are The Silent, Calm & Peaceful Saint. The Navy Blue Airy Aura of yours is humongous & over whelming. Being bestowed with unlimited power, you are still so humble. You are Shiva, the supreme self. I surrender to you. Bestow your ever lasting grace & wisdom on me.
The Lord God & His Son Jesus Christ, with the illuminating Holy Spirit..., they/is the supreme self! (Saturn the planet is just a lifeless rock orbiting the sun..., Holst was merely inspired by the astrological "character" of each planet...,)
@@bluebee5266and yet very nurturing if approached from the right angle. Saturn is the planet of Limitation, and its limits that make things in life special, and why time is so precious. Those striding string bass lines are just SO powerful and majestic!
The end of this piece of music is so mesmerizing and profound, quiet, peace and purposed.

Holy moly there is so much coughing in the audience. Great performance tho. Love the bass oboe.

The meaning of Saturn in astrology and mythology is Severity. Saturn is the harsh taskmaster and the Lord of Death.

It's not supposed to be "catchy" - you have Taylor Swift and her likes for that. This is about feeling and and finding your place in the universe.
This is classical music, not pop music. It's not supposed to have a catchy Melody. You're completely missing the whole point of this genre of music.
