I never had pulsing issues with my 20 1.8. Are you using AF-S? If yes that's the reason, AF-S uses Phase detection and then contrast detection to make absolutely sure it is in focus resulting in pulsing.
I could still recall once upon a time, Sony attemped to protect the RX1, and there would not be a 35mm f/1.8 allowed to be made for E-mount. After Sony discontinued the RX1 and signaled for the age of too many 35mm to begin, now we have 35mm f/2 or f/1.8 from Sony, Sigma, Samyang, Viltrox, TTArtisan, Yongnuo, and now from Meike.
Great job on the video Mark! Thanks for making it. I love that you are featuring budget lenses. There is plenty of potential in the third party e-mount ecosystem. Meike, Viltrox, Yongnuo, Sirui... they're all putting out good stuff. Are G Masters better? Of course they are. They're SUPPOSED to be. But if you're a lens manufacturer, and the closest comparisons to your products are the Sony first-party lenses, then that's pretty good company to keep.
Price of the Meike makes it a win for me. I already have the 16-34 F4 G from Sony. Meike 35 F2 would be good for sit down shots or casual photography which I do. Thanks for the video Mark!
Got the Sony 35F1.8. It comes at about 450€ in sale very often. Had a 35F1.8 of VIltrox (150€ or so) to compare it to. The AF of the Viltrox was a Dealbreaker for me. The Sony is lightning fast. Besides that it can also be sold for about the same money.. something to consider if you buy the things a bit pricier.
The Colors are whats really interesting to me. The Meike looks like it has a "Vivid" Filter on, in comparison to the Sony. Liked it for street and nature, not so much for Skin tones. But great option at the price. Full-frame gets cheaper to get into by the day. Especiall with glass nowadays
I sold the Sony because of chromatic aberration , funny how you missed that, for example 10:48 at the top of the pole and along the roofline in the background, but also in some previous shots. Otherwise the Sony was indeed flawless. The Meike seems like a good deal and has less CA. Great video all the same ! Meike 35/2.0 vs Yongnuo 35/2.0 next ?😍 Or are they the same ?
I sold my Zeiss 35mm 1.4 for the 35mm 1.8. Never looked back. It's great we have these new 3rd party lenses but the buying a used sony f1.8 lens for sometimes half price is a no brainer.
The best bang for buck for a 35mm lens for Sony is the Samyang 35mm f1.4 FE II. Been using that for about to 2 years now and it is really hard to justify any other lens better than that. Focus breathing is almost non-existence, image are pretty sharp. The only down side is the AF reliability compared to the native Sony of course. I suggest throwing that into the comparison too.
Sony 35mm is hard to beat and has some weather sealing although it is a bit dated now and Sony need to pull their finger out and replace their f2/1.8 full frame primes and give us full weather sealing.
What!? No video focusing test? I was really looking forward to the run towards and away and popping in and out of frame and Matrix bullet dodging moves. I made popcorn and everything 😞

for brightness, an apsc 1.2 is brighter than a 1.8 full frame. so if you had an a6700 with a 16mm 1.2, and an a7cIi with a 24mm 1.8, you’ll need to increase your iso on the 1.8 lens to achieve the same brightness. what is the same on the two lenses is the perceived background separation and the noise levels. so the noise level of 1.2 apsc is the same as the noise level of full frame 1.8. clear as mud??

I seriously dont think sony cares much about 3 party lens manufactores. Keep in mind that the camera division in all sony company, aint generating the most revenue. Besides that, if they get tired of them, they can do like canon and make it more than difficult for 3 party lenses to work on their cameras. Edit, you said it your self. The sony is sharper shot wide open. That matters. If you wanna compare lenses stopped down, it dosent make nuch sense. Most lenses now of days are sharp at f8 across the frame

plus, once your in the system, you end up buying plenty of Sony lenses
@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis exactly, cheaper lenses are a gateway.
Sony is smart. Let all sell their products that work with Sony. Sony wins, wins and wins. I'm a victim of Sony and loving it. And I'm loving those Sigma lenses on my a6700.
The Sony is never that price, it goes down to 399
I’ve seen it about $100 off, but never more than that. You might be thinking of the 35mm OSS for APSC
@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis are you thinking Canadian? Maybe that’s the mixup. Camelcamelcamel will probably tell us! Keep up the great vids.
@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis I just checked. Looks like it’s often on sale in the uk, not as much in the USA. It’s regularly £379 here so I probably conflated. But uk people take note! Thanks for the correction.
good to know!!
Sony 35 and 85mm f1.8 both suffer terrible CA, the worst CA I have seen for years. Both unusable in back lit situations for photo.
This video is about reasons you should buy sony 35 f1.8😅
I mean, it’s really good
Who would pay 700 for an old apsc lens? Sony is focusing on newer models.
sometimes it goes on sale - and it’s still really good
Click link and find price has gone up by 70%.
My amazon US store is listing it as $199 right now
I seriously dont think sony cares much about 3 party lens manufactores.
Sony is happy with the business model. They sell the of bodies, and once people get in with cheaper lenses, the inevitably buy a bunch of Sony lenses and they win again. 🤣
Hey Mark. Why don't you bring back your tasty red juice you used to have? It's been missing for a while now. 🥤🫶
