- Trying Something Different in Our Community Garden
It is finally time for us to open up our plot in our community garden /allotment garden here in zone 5 Wisconsin. And this season we are starting by planting our winter squash.
This year we are growing: Kabocha squash, Spaghetti squash, Canada Crookneck squash, Delicata Squash, and Butternut Squash.
One of the issues we have had to deal with over the past few years has been the challenge of dealing with the immense number of weeds that are all over the community garden space, so this season we are using some of the same black plastic we have used in years past over our sweet potatoes, and we are surrounding the squash and other plants with grass as a mulch.
Our hope is that this reduces the amount of maintenance we need to complete in this space over the course of this season.
Thank you so much for watching this short community garden tour 2024, and we hope you continue to watch this years community garden journey.

Wow, you have a home garden AND do the community garden! Impressive! Love that you’re in the same zone as me, I learn a lot! Thank you!!!
We have such a small space that we really couldn't grow a lot of those vining vegetables if we didn't, and I would hate to lose that production. Thank you so much for watching, and we are glad you are a part of our community!
Excited to see how the winter squash takes over that whole section! Are you looking for sweet corn or something to make cornmeal? Try something wild like Bloody Butcher dent corn alongside Red Sweet corn :D
Yes, you know they are going to fill that space up!!! Typically we have just grown for sweet corn, but corn for cornmeal would also be good as we do eat a lot of cornmeal porridge. I will look into those varieties for sure. Thank you!
I don’t have a lot of experience with growing sweet corn. I just know that I enjoy the bi-color variety the most!
We have grown bi-color in the past and have enjoyed it quite a lot as well.
Porcelain Doll Pumpkin has thick sweet flesh and stores well. Color is blue to orange. For me, I didn't need sugar or to much in pie.
Corn I'm not sure about but I would use a sweet dent Corn. Something that can store for long term for grinding. Maybe eating while young. Seed storage should be something to look at too.
Danny corn ???
I will look into porcelain doll pumpkin for sure! Thank you for the suggestion. I don't know too much about danny corn, but I am researching that now. Thank you so much for the suggestions!
@@GutenGardening you are very welcome. The Porcelain Doll Pumpkin is excellent for storage and pies. It will store for 8 months +.. As for the Danny Corn it's was developed by a homesteader named Dan of the Deep South Homestead you tube. He eats it fresh and dried for storage. I hope this helps.
My fav corn in my zone 5 is serendipity.
I love serendipity corn, and I believe we can get that from Jungs. Thank you for the suggestion.
Where do you get the black plastic?
