    Int in this instance refers to intensity. Anyway Mr Doty I just wanted to sincerely thank you for your knowledge. I fell in love with the idea and sounds of the synthesizer back in the 80's as a young teen. Due to life and circumstance I was unable to pursue owning one until recently. It was when I discovered one of your videos about a year ago that I was hit with the bug again. I just purchased my tenth synth (a Sub 37) and I can honestly say that you have taught me everything I know about how a synth works and how to create sound. I also hold you personally responsible for my analog synthesizer addiction affliction. Seriously though you are a great teacher and your videos have been extremely informative and helpful. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. What you do on here is a great thing.

      +Richard Farabaugh Yes! It was Marc's intro to the Microbrute that got me back into analog synthesis after my own Juno died years ago. I saw the video and thought "Wow! What a synth..... Wow! What a shirt!" ;)

      Richard Farabaugh anothe testimonial to the persuasive and inspirational role of mr. Marc's tutorial. I too was encouraged to perch assent first volca after watching the Volca tutorial series. I did look at other tutorials but Marc's teaching accompanied with his performance were the push factor. Here I am prepping again!

    Your enjoyment of the mini is really coming through in these videos. More than anything, I see it in the long pauses where you go quiet and just riff around. It's what happens to me when I discover a patch with an interesting envelope setting. Also, I love watching the scope as you play!

    • @automaticgainsay

      +Crolodon Those pauses are totally an indication that I'm having fun... and I can't believe how often it has happened in this series. I am actually distracted from what I'm doing relatively often because of how interesting this keyboard is.

    My guess with the popping is possibly the filters control voltage draining very quickly to ground through transistors or even capacitors at some stage in the filter circuit . Sometimes this remedied with CV reject internal trimmers . Great video again Marc , as ive mentioned before one of the best synth demo channels imo👍👍👍👍

  • @albedo0point39
    @albedo0point39 9 років тому +8

    Is the clicking 'problem' to do with very short envelopes + VCO waveforms starting at a non-zero point? In this case you'd get a jump in the output from the VCA.
    I've noticed this a bit on my modular. Lengthening attack time slightly solves it... and doing this would have the effect of smoothing that initial 'switch on' of the wave.
    I wonder if the click could be disappeared by hard-syncing the VCOs to reset to a zero-crossing point at the start of note sync?

    • @AdamTheAd-vanc3d
      @AdamTheAd-vanc3d 8 років тому

      Yes my guess was similar or a extremly fast and high control voltage bump.

    Thanks again for this video Marc. Keep up the great videos! And thanks to Korg for brining this lovely machine to mere mortals like me. I would never be able to afford a proper poly synth, otherwise. This sharing of info online (your videos) is certainly encouraging companies like Korg make synths into works of art, again. I also thought the Volca Sample was something quite special.

      memespace agreed....negative keytracking is only something I usually find on softies. Its great for basses, or dark pads. Even with parallel filters, with one positive halfway and the other negative halfway, lots of interesting things to be done with it. Seems like an easy thing to implement, and wish it was on more synths.

    Int stands for intensity. (Some argue interval/internation as increasing the intensity increases the difference between the highest and lowest points of whatever parameters you are passing through the LFO/Envelope/pitch,mod wheel.) also the clicking isn't really a problem as it only occurs noticeably when you don't have any VCO's up. I notice it on all the synths I own. Vintage and modern analogue. And if you don't want it, then a tiny amount of Attack on your Amp EG will remove it. :)

    Regarding the clicky-attack issue, I believe Nick at Sonicstate found that it's an easy fix by activating portamento but setting it to zero (or something). He goes over it in his usual wonderful, thoughtful detail. I'm 2 years late to the party on this thread but wanted to throw that out just in case it might help someone.

    Marc, are you creating the new sounds from scratch, or are you initiating the sounds with an existing sound in the 100 sound database that comes with the Minilogue? Does one have to go into the "edit" mode when fooling around with a sound close to what you want, or is it ok to just fiddle around with it without messing up the existing sound ? Just curious. Love your presentations, Marc!!! Keep up the great work! dc

    • @8-BitHeart79
      @8-BitHeart79 9 років тому +1

      +davidevoid The popping is most likely due to one of the analog components which wouldn't be an issue a system update would fix.

  • @SendyTheEndless
    @SendyTheEndless 9 років тому +2

    On my model, the closed filter popping comes and goes, so I'm guessing it's something to do with component drift. So if I want to do a take without filter popping, I just have to wait for the right time :) I'm OK with that. Kylie is a bit of a diva. On the organ-like sounds, it actually adds to the sound, because it's like a percussive key click.

    i got really lost in the part about filter self oscillation and using the filter as an oscillator while the vcos are turned down. can you explain this a bit more?

    • @automaticgainsay
      @automaticgainsay  7 років тому

      Okay, so a tone is made up of a whole bunch of harmonics stacked on top of each other going from low frequencies to high frequencies. We don't hear these harmonics as individual notes (although they are sine waves at specific frequencies), we hear them as part of the timbre of a sound. We mostly hear the fundamental and the first couple harmonics, and the rest just make up timbre. However, they are still individual tones with their own frequency. So, when you amplify one of them, you hear a sine wave.
      The resonance function of a filter boosts the harmonic at the filter cutoff point. Doing so changes the harmonic structure of a tone, and gives it a new timbre. If you turn the resonance all the way up, it actually makes the harmonic at the filter cutoff loud enough to hear... and all of a sudden, you have this audible sine wave happening. The filter, at that point, becomes an oscillator because it is now outputting a sine wave.
      You can control the frequency of that sine wave by "tuning" it with the filter cutoff knob. The filter cutoff defines the frequency of harmonic where the filter cuts off other harmonics, so it can be "tuned" to play whatever frequency of harmonic you want to be the sine wave. The keyboard function controls the filter cutoff according to the voltage put out by the keyboard, and since the keyboard is designed to put out voltages that align with note frequencies, the filter cutoff plays the harmonic at the filter cutoff point like a note.
      So, the filter becomes an oscillator that can be controlled by the keyboard.

      +Herr Absurd There is this weird thing happening in regard to the Minilogue that is "this doesn't operate as I expect it to" or "this doesn't operate in the way many other things do" or "these values are different" and somehow, it's translating to "there is something wrong."
      I think I've been working with vintage analog too long to think of these things as problems, but rather the status quo. :D

    • @dionysiaex5538
      @dionysiaex5538 9 років тому +2

      +AutomaticGainsay Got to say I'm with you Mark. Whenever anything new comes out there's always some demographic moaning about it and saying this is wrong or that is missing or this should be that instead. Especially with lower priced items which, in some sense, must be compromises there are those who just want to complain. The Minilogue is a whole heap of stuff for less cash than you would expect. I can take quirks if that is the deal. The world would be much worse if everything was perfect. And, as you know, much that is "vintage" wasn't perfect anyway.

      You guys, these responses are wonderfully refreshing compared to much of what I'm seeing on forums. Thank you. :)
      If someone is inexplicably concerned with these clicks, or these other non-issues that seem to be generating so much conversation, they're missing out on the truly staggering synthesis possibilities extant in this synth. I am surprised, pleased, and often awed at what this synth is capable of. The fact that this unimportant quirky minutia is generating so much conversation, let alone concern, is depressing to me.
      I agree with Richard... if people want predictable and precise results for every function, they have literally no business looking into analog synths at all. There is a world of delightfully precise, accurate, and predictable functionality in digital and software synths.

      +AutomaticGainsay If you read my entry above you will know I just purchased my 10th synth. Well I seriously believe the Korg Minilogue is most likely going to be number 11. My fingers have been hovering over the purchase button in my cart at the Sweetwater website for the past couple days. That almost clav sounding funky bass in this video may have tipped me over the edge. The clicks will add the percussion to my organ sounds.

  • @freebreeze9042
    @freebreeze9042 8 років тому +1

    I would like to hear his honest unabashed opinions/thoughts on what he thinks about these new "modern" analogs in terms of tone, compared to the vintage synths he loves. For me, once you play a vintage Prophet 5 , mini D or minikorg700s, these new analogs sound rather dark and cold. I want to know what he REALLY thinks. Not a politically correct equivocal statement, but his honest critical opinion.

    • @automaticgainsay
      @automaticgainsay  8 років тому +3

      +Free Breeze I want to know what he thinks, too!
      Oh, wait, do you mean me? :D
      Yes, the truth is that many of the analog synths that are coming out today do not sound like vintage analog synths. And why? Well, I blame users, mostly. People can't cope with having to keep an eye on tuning... about unpredictable variances... about noise... about distortion. Companies can't risk there being a negative response about these things, and consumers, in general, think they are the WORST POSSIBLE OUTCOMES without realizing that these things make analog synths sound warm, organic, and great.
      So, it is my unabashed view that vintage tone is not really happening in a lot of modern analogs. But, it is also my view that a lot of modern analogs sound really great.
      The Minilogue, to me, doesn't sound like a vintage analog synth... but it has enough analog character to excite me and inspire me. And its modern functionality and unique tone excite me even more. It really is one of my favorite analog polysynths, and I'm not saying that because I'm trying to flirt with Korg. Like I've said elsewhere, I'd climb up a ladder of Juno 6s to get to a Minilogue!

    • @PracticalCat

      @@automaticgainsay That is a very interesting theory! And what you said makes sense regarding what I
      "Don't like" about modern analog polys. To me they sound to perfect if that makes any sense? too static and sterile. I listen to old record's and what really moves me emotionally (besides superior song writing and musical tastes of the time) is the fact that the synths sound spooky and all over the place. They sound like a shitty old machine in a space and time.... existential you know? Particularly those big pads in songs about the cold war from certain german new wave bands;)

    I was so psyched to buy this synth, thought the "clicking" wouldn't be a problem. But this video changed my mind. When the filter is closed down in a very practical range, the clicking is horrendous. So, the functionality of this synth was just halved, so no longer a reasonable purchase. Think maybe Behringer is going to win 2018/2019. So funny to hear the angry Roland fan boys who bought all the digital boutique crap crying about Behringer releasing the analog synths the fan boys have been begging for for 20 years. They've suddenly developed a conscience and are freaking out about a company other than Roland making what they want with public open source designs. Lolz.

      Everybody has their own style, but I have to say that never has what this product is evincing been a problem for me. If you have the filter absolutely closed, what the hell are you doing with it? It makes no sense at all.
      Also, this "problem" can be completely remedied by altering your envelope slightly, and you'll still get the full range of sounds you might want.
      If you're coming away from this video put off by the non-issue of this fixable quirk, then I am very confused indeed. Please watch my videos on the issue.

To which you replied, "If you have the filter absolutely closed, what the hell are you doing with it?" Maybe you were in a hurry when you replied, but in my experience, when someone responds dishonestly like this, they are either a salesman or some form of politician, either way, the intent is to mislead.
