Mustie, this was a really nice video. I like to see the repair process from beginning to end. I can see you're making an effort to show part of the diagnosis and repair in real time. That's much appreciated.
19:23 I used to be the director of the town band and it was a big jazz band so during the Memorial Day parade we would have a couple of amps and a p a system mounted in a truck and we rode through the parade. We had one of these little Honda generators mounted on the front truck fender powering the amps. You could barely hear it. Great machines and yes they are expensive. Bought my dad a makita generator 10 years ago and it’s still in the box- I should open!
I have one just like it that I picked up at a flea market about 30 years ago, It's never been in the shop for repairs and I've done the maintenance on it. The most I've done is replace the spark plug and change the oil and clean the air cleaner. It can set all summer and after a shot of ether in the fall it will crank right off and then after that all it needs is choking and 2 or 3 pulls and away she goes. I think I gave $50 or 100 back then and consider that one of my all time best buys! We live now where there are many power outages in the winter and it keeps our Toyostove oil furnace running along with a couple of lights and will run almost all night on a tank of gas about a quart maybe a little more, figure 6 or 7 hours, no complaints ever! Great little generator, I just wish it were 2500 watts! I'd love another so I could keep the fridge running too and maybe a couple more lights, or my PC. LOL Gabby
Nice job on all the work you do on all great finds and really helps us out on finds here in Nova Scotia Canada cause it really helps man it does for sure
I've done around 30 of those ex1000s and have been everywhere on/in them. The jet is commonly undersized and I will typically drill it out barely(about half the machines I get). I always get $400 at a minimum for a beat up one, $450 on average, but would get $500 for the one you have in that nice of condition. Nice score at $100.
+sixtyfiveford +mustie1 I can attest to the price of them, I've been looking for one that hasn't been beat to crap for years.. Everybody around me wants $500+
@butchtropic That's why I have five generators now, I guess I've become some what of a hoarder. I have a Champion 3100 watt inverter generator, a Yamaha 1600, and 3 sportsman 1000i inverter generators my favorites so far are the Sportsman's.
In my old job the Honda's generators were used to power traffic lights as standby power. They were the only ones that ran smooth enough cycle wise to run the computerized light units. A regular generator just had to wavy an output cycle to run electronics. You will love that unit.. They are pretty much bullet proof..
Thanks to your videos I just finished cleaning the carburetor on my EX1000 Honda. It hadn't run in a year or so. Put it back together and started on the first pull. Mine also needs a tiny bit of choke to run at its best. Thanks for your help.
Something I have found to make it easier to remove the jet and tube that is held in place by gunk is open the throttle and take a small hex key that has a 90 bend, press on the tube with the end of the small end of the key and it should slide out with the jet. Assuming of course the jet has already been unscrewed.
@@mustie1 Your not kidding I just bought a power winch for my boat and trailer the electric winch saves my back it's a 21 ft boat when your tired and want to go home the last thing you want to do is hand winch in a 21 ft boat on a trailer by hand.
A landscape trailer would be great for yard sales. Take two pallets 4' plywood walls and lides to stack and tie down. Then use pallet jack for other items stay secure and dry. Easy store and off load.
Retooling a good screwdriver with a gentle twist at the sides then hardening it with heat and coating for removing those parts is an awesome thing for a small engine shop. So's a regulated 160F hotbox for cast carb bodies to make the screws easier.
Is the green light on? That indicates it is making power. I had a problem with the exciter capacitor. One of the leads had corroded off. It is a 13 FD capacitor and I found a 15 FD capacitor on eBay that fit the physical profile of the original and it worked fine after that.
very sweet score Darrin! i like the craftsman mower,... i got several opposed twin engines i could put on that and have a great back up mower! i got push mower coils!!
I know you know the trick but I usually just clean the rust off of the magnets and generally get spark. Now that generator was a great find. Fixed it looks like a $300 bill. :)
Don't leave the little generator at the cabin! lol Nice one. I've got my Honda mower carb apart at the moment. I may put a video up on getting it back together. What a palaver that is. :-)
Nice generator for when you camping, or if the RV doesn't start so you're not stranded in the wilderness. How's the kill switch on that mower? Like your videos, I just want to jump in there and get my hands dirty.
Honda generator. You can push the master control lever down about half way and that will cut off the gas to the carburator. When it cuts off, just push it all the way down to kill the motor, electrically. The switch has a rod that connects to a fuel shut off valve under the front cover about a foot away from the switch. I put a mark next to the switch with a sharpie, so I knew how far to push it down. It took about two minutes to shut off at idle speeds
that green light should be on, as soon as the engine comes up to speed. I got mine wet one time and it rusted the connect right off the exciter compactor, a 13uf capacitor on the rack under the front c.over. I replaced it with a 15uf capacitor and it works fine
I realize it’s an old video and you may know this but the coil on mowers with that much rust you should remove and clean the back and the posts it sits on before calling them dead. Seems to be a common problem here in the south.
I have 3 honda self propelled mowers.2 have carb problems. One has carb problem and rear drive problem rolls fine forward but locked in reverse. Should i fix? is there any money to be made? . Why would the drive push forward and lock in pulling back?
it's kind of funny , i never see you use a hammer on some of the projects like i do . when i am about to finish working on some of the things i try to fix ..good video
I think you need to get a winch with a wireless remote from TSC that is what I put on my trailer and it is awesome, then when you pull something up on your trailer you can steer it on straight. Just a thought
IT BLOWS MY MIND TO SEE THE AMOUNT OF TOOL BOXES (CONTAINERS) IT IS AN EPITONE OF WEALTH HERE IN MEXICO WOULD BE LIKE DANGEROUS TO HAVE THAT AMOUNT OF TOOLS
Yeah, them Honda generators are simple machines, fixed rev rate, capacitor excited, nice & quiet, I fixed up an EX650 this year, needed some deep surgery to the armature though as one of the diode packs had failed, and boy was that a PITA to fix!! :S It's a 240v model too, so has a switch for 50/60Hz operation, on 50Hz it's nice and quiet (though the peak watts drops to 550W, with 450W being its continuous), haven't tested the 12v charge circuit yet though, not got a suitable battery for it... :)
really enjoy your videos since I've retired watching people work is fun anyway I watched a video by Kenny Hicks on old route 100 in west virginia you need to watch this video
Working on a Craftsman lawn mower the back of it's locked, would not roll at all, and just cleaned the carburetor and the center jet out, I don't know what happened but my friend gave it to me, I gave him food for it, only it's only worth four, no blades don't know why?
What is your base line on money you are willing to invest in parts for repair? Also how do you know what kind of asking price on something you have repaired to sell? I'm new to doing this but trying to learn.
+Mustie1 - if you end up parting out that craftsman mower, I would be interested in a few pieces- it's a bit different than mine (different engine, mine has the kohler with the spin on oil filter), but I think the rest looks the same.
Are you excited to see that Volkswagon is bringing back the electric bus? Am not sure if they are going to go with the Westfalia name but saw the comerical of them bringing back the bus.
Hey Mustie, Sorry for a comment on an old vid but can you tell me anything about the Yamaha in the background at 0:22? I really like the looks/stance of it. I've been looking at street legal dirt bikes but they are a bit tall for me, that one looks perfect! Thanks in advance.
I was curious if you give help diagnosing problems with small engines. I have one that I have been working on for a while and have been unsuccessful with.
I had one just like it for close to 20 years. A great little generator.
It’s amazing how many pieces of equipment that are sold “were just running a year ago.”
It would be hard to find a host like you that explains what you are doing with whatever you do any better And with that ,learn a lot. Thank you...Mike

Just great! Now I gotta get a winch for my Tundra! Man!
You can use a small spiral EZ-Out with your fingers to remove those balky jet tubes from gummy carbs. Cheers!
You gotta love a good yardsale. You spend all winter anxiously awaiting for those spring sales. A wonderful way to spend a saturday.

Fantastic finds again. Congrats!
I don't know why but I like watching this
Just started watching , and hooked,
never have yard sales here in the UK.
+Dave Reid how do people get rid of there stuff
+Mustie1 usually sell on various websites , tip it (scrap it) or put it on freecycle.org, a recycling website and give it away.
